I seem to remember that the old 323 Turbo (circa 1990) was a 1.6 ltr 16v turbo producing 148hp. I think it's 0-60 was about 7.8 secs, with a top speed of around 135ish.

I drove one when they were nearly new. Had a lot of body roll, but plenty of grip. Didn't really feel that fast unless you thrashed it intro oblivion.
Overall, I'd guess that whilst it could be quite quick, would need a lot of work to drive it fast (just trying to keep the engine on the boil to make up for the weight of the 4wd) so over any long distance, a good hot hatch would probably stand a good chance.

Early 323s are 1.6 turbo, 148BHP made from 86 - 89. 0 - 60 is 7.1 as they weigh naff all and have very short gearing, they only just make 120mph top end. They're a good laugh to drive, very cheap and reasonably reliable. Easy to get 190BHP, which makes for quick acceleration, but they're no good top end.

Later GTX made from 90 - 94 is 163 BHP, 164 ib.ft torque, much heavier and 'softer' car. 0 - 60 is 7.5 - 8 secs, top end around 130 - 135 ish. Nice to drive, can be made fairly rapid, as it's dead easy to get 230ish BHP, and the gearing is longer so they do better top end with more power. I had one before I sold it to buy my GTR. There's probably 30ish of these in the country now, all Jap imports, although more are coming over as they're cheap in Japan. A cheap scooby alternative when the exhaust and filter are replaced.

The GTRs were made from 92 - 94, only 2500 were made based on the GTX with loads of trick stuff from the factory, like forged rods, port matched head and manifolds, poly bushes in the suspension, the list goes on. They're very much a road legal rally car. The stock engine and turbo are good for over 400BHP without any rebuilds, sadly the gearbox is way too weak to take this! Massive turbo lag, but from 3500Rpm upwards, it does go! Standard power is 185BHP, 0 - 60 in about 7 dead and 135 mph. Mine is standard except for a fairly poor HKS cat back exhaust, and had 254BHP on a recent rolling road day. My mates has shown 280BHP with a better exhaust (no cat) and after market filter. I have a friend in Scotland, currently having an uprated gearbox built, and a full Motech management system, his engine is currently showing over 400BHP on the dyno, still on the standard engine and turbo  . The cars are massively restricted in standard form, and respond very well to mods, exhaust air filter and an RR tune will get 270 - 280BHP.

With 254BHP and a gentle start, I've done a 13.8 at 102mph quarter mile, it's not wise to try hard launches, as if the 'box goes, you're looking at a big bill! With a few more mods next year, late 12s should be possible. I know a few people running mid to low 12s, one guy in aus should be doing 11s next year. The best thing about the cars is no-one knows what they are, ok, a lot of people find them ugly, but who cares?

I average 27mpg driving to work and back, although 20ish is more like it when attempting to drift (badly!) at Pazzas air field day. Insurance is group 15 for the late cars, classic for the early ones, so dirt cheap. There's roughly 20 GTRsin the country now, although they're growing in popularity, as they're cheap to buy. Parts are ok, although there are no UK specialist, and not many even worldwide. It's hard to buy basic tuning parts, but if you're prepared to improvise a little, like I have an EVO 6 intercooler, fits like a glove! Just so long as you never break any of the 4wd system, you're ok...
