I'm glad to see our government is spending our money wisely. I have spent a lot of time on the M6 the past 12months (I'm talking 35,000 miles) and today was the first time I had seen one of those huge signpost things working for a while - what did it tell me...

'FOG'

For fcuks sake, I wondered why I couldn't see very far!! It's takes millions of £ of government money just to tell road users something they already bloody know....arrggghhh!

Wouldn't it have been wise to place some of these info boards around non-motorway places to warn user of heavy traffic on a mway so that they can a necessary alternative route?? I remember on the M56 a few months a go, I was sat still in my car - the message on the helpful board...."Queue"...no sh*t sherlock!!

They could at least put the football results up!!

i live pretty close to the dartford tunnel and used to have to come back that way from my girlfriends at night.

poxy overhead gantries nearly always had some stoopid 20mph speed limit displayed, which related back to an accident in rush hour

and you can bet ur last dime if id gone through there at 60 id have been knocked off for £60!! ffs the govt sucks - and i gotta tax my car this week too

You get taunted on the m25 by signs that say 50mph when all your doing is 5mph, you sit there and think I wish.

The reason they say fog...

Is because some guy in the early nineties got off an accident which was clearly his fault, he was driving to close to the car in front and way to fast in the fog.....

He then smacked into the back of the other bloke....

He then argued it wasnt foggy due to the fact the the fog signs were not illuminated and WON!

Thats why the signs tell you its foggy!

How can you read the sign in the fog anyway? Next they'll be putting signs saying "Warning - Dark" where you can't see them!

Actually, I find the signs on the M25 extremely helpful...

The 'Queue Caution' one is good, because on it warns me to slow from V-Max (anywhere up to 140 on some stretches in the morning) as there is a queue ahead.

This saves me mucho hassle of having to brake extremely hard thus firing all the contents of the passenger seat (laptop, briefcase, smokes, tracker bars etc) into the passenger kickwell.

This also makes me safer, because I then don't need to resume that sort of speed whilst trying to retrieve the items I would have lost in the kickwell - I find it difficult to reach all those items and maintain a steady course/speed.

Also it gives me time to make a dive for the hard shoulder, where I can gain loadsa time by 'jumping' to the front of the Jam.

Personally, I think they should have transmitters on Cop cars, so that when they pass a gantry they set off the board to display 'Warning - Rozzers, Watch your speed' for a timed period - 40 seconds should do it.

Most gantry signs on motorways warn you of danger that has already passed. I regularly drive up the M11 through torrential downpours, only seeing a sign to warn me of rain after I've driven through it. Would be nice to know that the stretch ahead is rainy before I get there!!
