View Full Version : Finally I've done it
After many months I have finally finished reading Lord of the Rings. :D :D :D
I have started it many times over the past few years, but never got around to finishing it. Now this afternoon I read the last 74 pages of book 3 and it's done. :)
Now I can watch the film as I wouldn't do so before as I wanted to finish the book.
If the film is half as good as the book then it will be worth the wait.:D
i have read the book many moons ago and watched the film.
All I am going to say is, it is well worth the wait..:)
I STILL havent finished the book :( about 900 pages through ....

I've just bought the special edition DVD (Waited for it instead of buying the orig DVD)
It has 30minutes extra footage. DTS 6.1 Sound and is the film is spread over 2 DVD, with another 2 DVD for Special Features. Well Worth it. The fireworks scene in DTS is amazing:D
Andy's bought me the ltd edition for christmas. I'm really looking forward to watching it. Hopefully it will be easier than reading the book , as with it being old english , there were bits I had to read several times to understand. :(
Best book I have ever read though. Anyone got any suggestions for anything else? I've got some Terry Brookes here to read.
:)
I've read the whole book through at least 5 times - I love it! :)
I can't believe they're showing Gandalf coming back in the trailer for the Two Towers - it's one of the biggest surprises of the whole book! Fools

Read the book 3 times, seen the cinema relaese twice and the DVD special edition once. Bloody excellant film. This might sound sad but I have been getting excited about seeing the second film for the last month or so.:)

terry brookes is good. I read the first one. easier to read than LOTR but you do get the feeling his "Stones" novel is a copy of LOTR. Could try the other TSR novels such as the Dragonlance series. Also not as heavy going as LOTR. (christ, the geek in me is surfacing again!)
I don't think anything is going to be half as good as LOTR.:( I was thinking about the other Tolkien books.
Andy has just told me that I can watch the film when he picks it up tomorrow. :D :D :D
The only problem I've got is that I am incredibly squemish and I'm hoping that the 2nd and 3rd films are not as graphic as the book. Can someone let me know when they see it please. :)

When is the next one due? Watched the first one a couple of weeks ago, thought it was pretty good.

Maybe it's just me, but I read the first part just before seeing the film and the film annoyed me!
74 pages in one afternoon??
I couldn't read that much in a month?
Started reading persus spur about four years ago and still only half way through, read about 60 pages i think.

The Two Towers is due for cinema release on 18 Dec... can't wait!!
As for books to read afterwards - depneds what you want to read.
If it's heoric fantasy a la Tolkien you could try Tad Williams Memory Sorrow and Thorn trilogy - heavy going in parts but well worth reading.
If you want a less magic intensive fantasy try George RR Martins A song of Ice and Fire series - this guy writes in a truly individual way!
Robin Hobb has done some good stuff and also Peter F Hamilton.
They're my recommendations anyway ;)

I started reading the Silmarillion about a year ago and I have only just managed around 70 pages. It is a bit dull. And my girlfriend started Unfinished Tales a few months back, and, guess what?, she hasn't finished it. I guess the Tolkien books which were compiled by his son Christopher, were not written as novels, but as supporting information to the Hobbit and TLOTR. So, despite having some very interesting passages, they are quite difficult to read.
On a more comedy note, there is a new Discworld book out!:)
Just opened the film and will be watching it this evening. I can't wait. :D :D :D

Have you tried the Hobbit?
Did you read the Appendices :D but seriously, still good reading.
The cinema release was good, but disappointing in that it didn't fully chronicle the bits before arriving at Rivendell, the Special Edition does address that to a point. But in fairness, to accurately portray the book, the films would have been seriously longer and I found that my arse was adequately numb by the end of it... I wouldn't have wanted it any number ;) :D
I can't wait for the 2 towers.
On a different note, anyone seen Die Another Day? Did you find it a bit disappointing because of the unrealism (even for a Bond Film)
Although the car chase across ice is the best Bond car chase yet.
Sod Ultimas, Skylines et al. I want a Vanquish :)
