View Full Version : How can you tell when an oil pump is going?
This ones not for the 200, but my runabout Nova  :o
Its a bit noisy on startup in the cold mornings, bit like a diesel sound. It goes away after I've started driving it, fine about 1 minute later.
Can anyone help me out here,
Thanks for any help :)

Fit some under-car neons and turn the stereo up.
:)
If its the 1.2 or 1.4 they tend to get very Cammy when the oil pumps on its way. The oil pressure light starts flickering which gradually gets worse and worse - staying on more and more.
Dave - Git (I suppose someone had to say it though!)
Stuy - Do you think it could be the cause of this noise, it's only done this once or twice. Its not a very extreme noise when it has happened but diffently different from the norm. Its a 1.2i, I think its the engine they use in the Corsa's  If it was the pump, why would it go away after a short period of time?
Cheers Guys.
Sounds like a lifter or summut like that - just taking its time to fill with oil. Does the noise come from the top of the engine, and only do it when cold - ie after all the oil has drained out of them?

Yeah, only when v.cold (left overnight). Don't know where the noise comes from.

Could be piston slap caused by worn bores so the piston wobbles about until it heats up, expands and stops wobbling.

:D
You forgot LED's on the washers :D :D
Sorry mate only joking
Steve
LOL at all the Nova jokes, I wasn't expecting any of that
BTW Martin T is right about trying to blow it up, its a sure fire way to ensure the reliability of a car. I know someone who got a GT5 turbo dirt cheap so he fired the boost right up and tried to break it, but it wouldn't bust  A GT5 for christs sake

My brother used to work in a scrap yard, and for a laugh, they got a mk2 Fiesta with the Valencia engine, put a brick on the throttle, fired it up and legged it. It took about 10 mins to break down - no explosion, no rods through the block, it just gradually heat siezed, and stopped. BORING!!!

I read on supraforums about a couple of guys who got an old Mk3T, wired the wastegate open so that there was unlimited boost, nosed up to a telegraph pole and floored it until the radiator exploded and one of the sparkplugs fired itself into the bonnet . . . .
Must have been pretty spectacular but I can think of better ways of having fun than trashing an old car!
At the crail 1/4 mile thrash they had a competition to see who could kill a sierra first, there were two of the cars side by side. With one guy with the foot to the floor and someone else pouring BALLBAIRINGS and other hazards  into the the open oil filler it took about 10 mins to kill one! The other one took longer WTF?
Talk about bullit proof engines!
Just backs up my theory really doesn't it :D
Just in case anybody is interested (probably not given the car in question :o ), my old man had put the wrong oil in last time he changed it, some diesel stuff or something. If you want a job done well........
I've chucked some 10w40 in now and its nice and quiet :)
