It's rwd with a 1.8 Nissan turbo engine...
Yep, you guessed it, Reliant Scimitar SS1
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/razza987/MyScimitar_edited.jpg
I'll admit it's not the best looking car, but it definitely shifts! :D I decided to switch from the MR2 after it failed its MOT big-time. I'd seen the Scimitar guys race at Curborough last month and was really impressed with how quick they were. I sold my motorbike last week and had funds available, so when I found out about this one, I had to snap it up. Chargecooler, 2 stage boost, 5th injector, uprated suspension and brakes, cossie clutch (heavy!), Compomotive alloys. It needs some work though :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/razza987/MyScimitar1_edited.jpg
Paintwork is in a poor state, could really do with a blow-over, but this is a go-car not a show-car!
Thanks to Craig (CNHSS1) & CrouchieB for their help and advice :sxoc:
Cheers, Raz
LOL, there seem to be a trend going now! what happened to the mr2 then?
It's, er, different... :p

It's, er, different... :p
:finger: :p
Yak, the MR2 failed its MOT mainly due to the amount of rust. It's repairable, but I thought why spend money fixing it, then a lot more money trying to make it competitive. And I had money burning a hole in my pocket, so thought I'd try something different :D
Raz
If you do happen to want an MR2 shell that has very little rust, I've got one in my garage that I'm letting go for not very much money ;)
That Scimitar looks bloody horrible, but I imagine it's a hell of a lot of fun

Ah one of Mr Michelotti's finest :D
Are you going to do the RSSOC championship? Rumours are that it is wide open if you run a standard turbo car...
Bloody hell Raz, you didnt waste anytime did ya! Welcome to the joys of british sports cars:wack: panel shuts you can get ya fingers in, crap heaters, styling by Ray Charles and Stevie Wonders guide dog, but its 'proper' wheel drive and aint gonna rust like a Datsun.
You know where i am if ya need anything mate.
Good choice, Raz!
Having chatted to CNHSS1  at the Classic show at the NEC recently, there's so much potential in these cars and I'm sure you'll be happier just coz it'll be a damn sight quicker than the Mister2.
Excellent - Keep us informed of your mods/progress, etc.

Hi Ben, yes, but I'll be running in "Road Modified" as the mods the car's already got put me out of "Standard". :)

glad you found something tho
Well I think its a good buy
How much did you get that for? Interested also, in that you mention the cossie clutch. I've not heard of these being used on the CA18ET, do you have any info.
I was thinking about picking one of these up for my CA18ET, but decided to buy a rusty Datsun :p

No more info on the clutch mate, sorry :)
And there was me thinking you'd be slating me for leaving the AW11 fold :wack:
In a 200SX forum? LOL! :wack:
Nah, I love all kinds of cars on their own merits. After all, I've owned/driven an eclectic mix in the past: MG Metro, TR7, Mini Clubman, TR7V8, Skoda Rapide, Impreza Turbo, 200SX S13, MR2 AW11, Forester Turbo. :indiff:
Right now I'd love another 200SX S13, or an MR2 SW20. Both to be converted into serious track or race weapons. However, I'm also keen on salvaging a crashed TVR Griffith. Stripping and caging it out, getting a hardtop on it and using it for the same purposes.
I've always wanted one since they first came out... :ghey:
So I'm certainly not one to comment on your choice in a negative fashion! :D
cossie clutch conversion was done by a few of the Scimitar dealers when the cars were new ('86-'91) as the availablity of jap tuning stuff wasnt as good as it is now. The dealer in Chester, Graham walker Ltd, were the pioneers of this conversion as they produced a 'boost button' kit taking the car from std 6psi to 1bar and the clutches tended to fail, so they machined the gearbox input shafts to take std cossie clutches. Iirc they needed new holes drilling in the cossie clutch covers to line up to the flywheel dowels too. Doubt very much whether GW still have spare machined shafts in stock, but they may tell you where they had them machined. No real point these days as fitting an S13 clutch or uprated one, is the way most scim boys go now.

Another reliant to chase the 200sx boys in the sprints & hill climbs
thats the Gottfried 'blah blah' charge cooler conversion. Ok so his surname wasnt blah blah but ill be buggered if i can remember what it was! Les English ran a sprint car with one too. Ze German quavlity und built like ze brick shitten housen.

What sort of power do the SS1's put out in Road Modified?
At work tonight, telling an old mate of mine what I'd just bought, he says "I've seen an advert for one of them in a magazine in one of our desk drawers". Turns out it's an early 80's copy of Playboy :wack: and it had this in it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/razza987/CCF14112006_00002.jpg
So obviously I had to rip it out :wack:
First things to sort out with the car are insurance  then the exhaust and air filter (both standard at the mo'). Oil & filter change. Then I want to get it over to APT and see what she's putting out and whether the 5th injector needs any fine tuning. I've got a bucket seat to go in, need to get a harness. Obtain & fit a Sierra LSD. That should give me a good base to start off. I won't be able to get to my first race until the end of April as I'm away for about 10 weeks between now & then. Busy busy bee...
Ben, there was a spare wheel, but it's flat so I took it out, I'll be getting some tyre weld in the next couple of days, just in case.

Not if you turn them in to make it more aerodynamic
its gonna depend on which class and championship you decide to run in. MSA Road Modified will allow 5th injectors but not the scim championship.
Crouchie B is probably looking at circa 170-180bhp but remember your not dragging a heavy car around so the bhp/ton is a lot more interesting. As std they weigh 839kg as opposed to maybe 1200kg for S13?? so its lively.
As for it being ugly, i cant argue at all, they are awful, but then nissans arent works of art are they......hardly an E type or Ferrari 250GTO (no offense implied, inferred or suggested before i get a barrage of abuse....:) )

Oh well, I'm sure one of the S12 guys will be interested :)
Thats cool, i can see the apeal! ~ 800kg
What bloody engine is that though? 8 spark plug and 5th injector
scimmy ben
15-11-2006, 15:51
Its a Euro/US version. The 8 plugs were used up to a certain rev limit to start 2 flame fronts in each cylinder to promote cleaner burn. The scimitar specialists bought a tonne of these crated engines/boxes with all ancilliaries about 7-8 ?? years ago and sold them off for around £1K each. The fact that Razza's SS1 has one of these engine should mean the car has been well looked after.

I've got a box-file FULL of the history of it. Nearly all the receipts are from Graham Walkers place. Same owner for 14 years, 51,000miles. It appears to have had A LOT of money lavished on it. But after all that it's still tatty, inside and out. Especially when compared to the 3 others that Paul has in his garage!
There are loads of natty little things that I need to sort out:
Passenger door won't open (linkage disconnected apparently)
Indicator stalk dodgy (same as an S12?)
Cracked windscreen (fully comp insurance ;) )
Hardtop sunroof leaking (replace with aluminium?)
Headlights truly awful (I may be driving it in the dark!)
Accelerator pedal has a looong way to travel (make a new one/bodge the standard one?)
I'm sure there's more...
I've had a good insurance quote on it, £380 FC :)
Fitted the old K&N filter from my S13 to it yesterday, need to work out a new pipe routing to get it in some cold air though. Hopefully getting the exhaust done this weekend
Raz :)
most of the niggles also apply to Lotus' TVRs etc etc lol, its a bit of the nature of the beast. Doors are a common problem and only time, not money to fix, get the inner panel off and all will become apparent.
Lights are shite, better bulbs, poss rewire/replace relays and get the spots working well too. H/lamps are Metro van.
Long travel pedal is the norm and is a benefit in the bad weather in an effort to modulate the power delivery. Personally i see it as a benefit rather than a pain, but then i used one on the road for years, even in the snow:eek: EDIT: not the one in my sig!:wack:
Stalks pobably need use, the contacts get crappy with lack of use, but if not they are BL metro based iirc. i may have a spare set if ya need them.

Yeah, I can see your point, I might get used to it. I drove it to work tonight, bloody good fun :D The tail moves around much sweeter than my 200, really progressive.
Ben, that quote was from Performance Direct. I tried Adrian Flux's classic department but they wouldn't touch it because it was modified and not kept in a garage :indiff: Paul has sent me a load of stuff from the RSSOC so I'll have a look through there for a specialist.
Craig/Bryan, do you have competition car insurance, or just a normal road policy?
Cheers, Raz :)

That car is proper hideous, worse that can be said for a 200SX is bland. On a personal note I f*cking hate the E-Type :hurl:
Those rear lights, are they from an old Granada?!
Chris_Lacey, Some people eh?
rear lights are from another icon of 80's styling, the ford Capri
Raz,
mine is insured as a road car due to our regs requiring tax MOT and road insurance, but the car is never used on the road obviously. I dont insure the car for on track usage, as due to the amount of mods, the premium for each event was more than double the entry fee which is unrealistic imho.
Its probably worth investigating a competition policy as yours will be driven on the road, but again most of those dont cover on track action unless theres a hefty additional premium. Some insurers now cover track days, but as theres no timing allowed on track days, its legally a different proposition than a competitive event.

I drove it to work tonight, bloody good fun :D
Not so much fun on the way home :indiff:
The headlights started flickering on and off, in fact all electrical power was flickering and completely dying for a few seconds at a time. Didn't seem to affect the engine though  Any ideas?
Cheers, Raz
Check the earth strap on the battery mate.
when you say all electrical power, do you mean to the lights? could be the main switch on the steering column. Switch runs lift motors for lights and all lighting, so they get a bit of a workout especially if the lift motors havent been used much (they tend to get a bit sticky, drawing more current). Take the switch out of the cowling and operate it by hand, leave the lights on for a few minutes whilst engine running. If the switch gets hot, youve found the culprit. Also remove and replace each of the relays (inside fuse box) in turn a few times to clean the contacts. Often a problem on cars that get used infrequently or get stood for months.
razza987
17-11-2006, 12:55
when you say all electrical power, do you mean to the lights?
All electrical power, lights, heater fan, stereo, the lot!
Ant I checked the earth lead last night but it all seemed ok. Going to have another look this afternoon. Could it be the alternator?
Raz :)
unlikely to be the alternator as if its not charging properly the lights etc would get progressively worse and the car would start to misfire and run erratically before the battery died. If the engine is unaffected, its more likely to be a loom short or dodgy connection to the accessories side of the loom than the engine side. remoev the fuse and relay box mount from the tub and front wing (4 self tappers) and theres enough pudding in the loom to lift the fuse/relay box up to investigate. Check for damage where the loom goes thru the tub bulkhead for damage. Check the earthing strap on passenger side of engine bay that runs down from coil to chassis rail next to down pipe, its only self tappered to the chassis:ghey: . Check the earth strap from block to chassis next to dipstick and engine mount. Tell us how you get on. Theres a couple of gods of electrickery i can put you onto if still no joy.

Serviced the Scimmy today :)
Oil filter's a bit of a bastard to get to (sh1t tool doesn't help) so it took a while longer than expected. And the parts place gave me the wrong filter
Old coolant was nice and clean, which is good :)
Also took the oppurtunity to wrap the chargecooler and pipes in some heat reflective matting that I've got lying around, as they pass right next to the exhaust and over the top of the cam cover. That should help it do its job
When i drove it earlier today, it didn't have the problem with the electrics. I'll be taking a look at the points you mentioned tomorrow Craig :) Also going to try and sort the passenger door mech, the only thing is I can't open the door to take the panel off! :wack: :smash:
Was hoping to get the exhaust done tomorrow, but my welder needs more notice to clear space in his workshop :( Next weekend maybe.

ah yes, forgot to mention filter is nissan micra turbo rather than S12.
try a length of welding rod with a hook bent on it and fish about on the interior side of door panel against the glass and try and pull the latch up. Real sod of a job but is possible. Other tahn that its taking the passenger seat out whcih will allow the removal of the door panel without the door open iirc. Sod of a job too.
I picked up my new full cage yesterday from Protection and Performance in Skipton, what a lovely piece of kit! They are top guys:notworthy , made 3 cages for us, fitted one as the pattern to Chris Eades SS1 Turbo sprinter and mine and the other one are for us to fit. Will email you pics soon mate.

OK, getting a bit annoyed now
I've got the door panel off (well, hinged up out of the way) and I can reach the operating lever on the door release, but the bloody thing refuses to open. I've taken the panel off the drivers door as well so I can check what the mechanism looks like and make sure I know which bit to pull on.
I just don't get it  and I hate things I don't get...
Craig, the cage sounds cool, any photos? How much?
Raz
I picked up my new full cage yesterday from Protection and Performance in Skipton.
Think thats who also did BigTones and Brens
Raz
the lock mech has (iirc as i havent got any on my car!) 3 opertaing levers, 1 x to the lock barrel, 1 x door handle release and 1 x to the inner door handle release. The rods that run from these levers to each handle/lock are held on with pain-in-the-arse plastic widgets that spring off and allow removal. I suspect that the one to the lock barrel is out of adjustment which stops teh other two working properly. Pop it off and then operate the door handle release ones by hand directly from the levers. When it opens, make all the adjustments with the door panels off and use like that for a week until you are sure youve cured the adjustment or youll have to do it all again:thumbs: pics of cage to follow tommorrow hopefully, fiited and in kit form. Not 100% sure on cost as we had 3 made at the same time, but 650+vat rings a bell each (we paid 600+vat each for the 3). They fit in std car too with no real mods required but pics will reveal all.
SM
the guy at Performance and Protection, Dan, is a top bloke and their workmanship is second to none:clap: :notworthy . The epuipment they have is very impressive and they manufacture spaceframe chassis', and suspension components too, as well as cages for cars, racecars and off road stuff too. Very impressed.

I had a quick mess about with it this morning before coming to work, got it open  Only problem then was that I didn't want to shut it again :( So I've left the cover over the car with the door slightly ajar. Hopefully getting off work early so I can sort it then.

Okay, the passenger door mech is fixed (finally :wack:) The only thing I couldn't get to work was the key to lock/unlock, but I'm not bothered about that.
Also cleaned the inside of the headlights and re-aligned them, sooooo much better :)
I've got most of the parts to make a stainless exhaust now, tempted to have a go at welding it myself  I can weld, but I don't know if I can do it well enough. Would love to make my own system though, that would be  I've got plenty of spare stainless, so might have a practice at the weekend and make my mind up then :)

I had the SS1 MOT'd today and it failed:
Drivers headlight-no dipped beam (worked yesterday...)
Passenger headlight-dips the wrong way (European?)
Drivers side fog light (worked yesterday...)
No screen wash
Passenger door won't open :indiff:
Most of those should be an easy fix, £60 for a headlight!
I haven't made any mods yet, been busy fixing all the niggles though.
Next week should see some better updates ;)

Headlights are metro - you may get one from ebay/breakers. You need a specific type though (Metro city?). Try someone light Phil Howard or Paul Maddison they may have one knocking about.
As for the other bits - that's what you get for buying a scimitar :D :wack:
