View Full Version : Another PC data question...
must feel like Pub Quiz night!!!
OK, so I've got a few files that I HAVE to transfer off my old PC. In zipped form, they are 4.5mg. Ouch, as I have no zip drive or cdrw.
LPT transfers work I've been told - do I need a network card on each machine? Or can I do something clever with modems and do a direct modem transfer?
Why don't you just 'zip' them accross a colleciton of disks? :)
if you want to network the two machines, you will need a network card in each machine, then connect the two through a hubb or cross over cable.
If you don't possess an LTP laplink cable then the easiest way is to use Winzip to span the archive to multiple disks.
Cheers
Was talking to one of the systems guys at work and he was going on about printer-port to printer port link....
Any ideas?
Or does that need a card too? ???
Ok, this is prolly REALLY dumb, but I've never had to know...
how do you get it going over mulitple disks? Is that option available in the free version??? ug... all this i need to know... LOL
A printer port to printer port cable is known as a laplink cable and is a very good way of transferring data between machines which do not have network cards installed.
Disk spanning is available on all versions, i can't remeber exactly but when you add files to the archive you are creating there should be a drop down with "Multiple disk spanning" which you set to auto. Check winzips help for more info
Ahh laplink.... that's what I want...
Does this have to be a special cable? Oh, I supppose it does... male to male and all.. fab...
what's more how does HDD one see HDD 2 over the cable? oh does it just spot it lurking over there?
its going to be a very large round of beers that I have to buy at one stage...... ;) :)
Cheers guys, this help is MUCH appreciated - they may be basic Qs but I've never had to know and my parents/friends aren't much use in this matter!!!!

Laplink serial/parallel connections AKA Direct Cable Connections have a sheet on the M$ Knowldege Base site.
Check out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298446 for more info. on how to install and configure.
I did it once myself to transfer files from laptop to PC. It worked but was slow so now I have gone the whole hog - hub, NIC, cat5 etc. Much better :D
If you only have 4.5 MB data (a little more than 3 formatted floppys) once zipped that may be a little less and may only span 2 disks. Depends what it is you're zipping really and whether it's alreadu compressed.
Another solution is if you have web space provided by your ISP - simply FTP the data to the web server and then FTP it back when you're set up again

Winzip will only give you the option to span an archive when you opt to create it on the floppy drive BTW.
