Came back from a drift academy day on wednesday really impressed and a little shocked that there was only 4 of us on the practice side of the fence. The majority of peeps there I found were corporates or people getting drift lesson type presents.. all of who were are on another track well away from us.

Great atmosphere mainly owing to the fact that Ian (yorkshire ram) turned up out of the blue to have a laugh with. and I reckon its not bad value for 80 or so pounds for a full day.

You get left well alone unless you want help and they have a pretty good balance of letting people get on with it and organisation. The organisation of the day itself is silky smooth all advance bookings really and letters in advance of turning up telling you exactly what to do where to go and good facilities on site like bogs and tea and coffee and food. The only thing that was a bit pants was the cold weather really but thats not something they can control :ghey:

Anyway pics.

Me and Ians Dad (his is the purple car) I gave him biscuits :D

Crazy jag and the instructors blue s14 which was quite pretty but didn't go far without having someone ripping parts of it by hitting the grass or cones :D !

Ians car on the left Ian standing with helmet gary next to him with the team falken car. They were doing some synchronised demo practice car dance thing.

Ian was dying to see how the car was with the new diff (he's taught me alot in the past and also seen the car evolve over the last few years) so I was more than happy let him take it out for a hot lap he was most impressed with the cusco diff (which i feckin love get one if you drift !!) this is me telling him about the changes before we go out.

good stuff mate looks like you had fun, was well busy last time i went, would be amazing to go on a day like this... did tyres last???

Lenagh

Ian got through three partworn sets but he wasn't letting em rest :D

I had new eagles on my rears and got them down to canvass but I had to rest em as if you did two or three continuous drift laps i.e. without regaining traction for more than a tick then they would just get to hot and by the 3rd / 4th lap and leave you spinning more than drifting.

Eagles are pants though ZERO smoke :( getting nankangs fitted next :D

Awesome fun. :)

Lenagh put in some storming runs, really found his feet (so to speak!) with each run. The car handles nice and predictive through transitions, reckon it just needs a bit more grip at the back end for more control into those fast sections but it's a great platform and it's more down to personal preference. Just reduce the rear camber a tad and run 40psi. :) also, possibly try and increase the castor with some adjustable track-control arms.

cheers for the biscuits and tools fella! ;)

Zero smoke on Eagles? Which sort, F1s? Ive found them to be as smokey as a really bloody smokey thing.

Lenagh

Yeah steve was old skool F1's I melted the suckers too but all they did was create alot of audible screechy drama and little puffs of smoke :wack: most dissapointed !

I've got a pair of 265/35/18 sat in my pile waiting to be used on the pink after it's 5 studded. I expect to cause a smokey eclipse that day :D

Oh, and Nankangs are ****ing awful for drift mate. They feel so loose and gay :( Try some Toyo if you can, or Falken, 10x better. If you're wanting cheap end of the market then get some Wanli S109 (or something), they last quite long and do smoke a bit (using them here)...

I think Wanli is japanese or something for 'Long Life' :wack:

They refuse to die :D:D:D

You feckers must be taking a piss on em before you go out because I couldn't get half as much smoke :wack: ian was raving about the toyo's as well.

The f1's were nice and grippy - rule of thumb it seems is the more expensive the rubber the better it generally is to drift with do you lot concur with that ?

I checked the wear on mine after each session and interestingly ians tyres were worn on the outside edges only and mine was worn evenly all the way across which would point to the camber being about right to get the most grip. I guess I need either a wider tire or some extra downforce on the rear for the higher speed corners currently it means scrubbing off more speed that I would like during the entry which is boring to keep it in line.

I won't get much choice now with tyres as I'm taking whats left out of widnes nissans part worns bin :wack: so let me know whats good out of the shitters :D

My favourites for feel and smokooo that i've tried over the last few years:

Toyo & Falken - top two for me, if I find some in a pile somewhere i'm visibly excited.

Wanli - good budget choice, feel very slippery when you've just come off Toyos, makes the drift speeds much slower.

American GT - cheap and wide (£50 for 255/40/17), does this though - (look at all that lovely unused rubber (probably my fault for running about 8 degrees rear camber))
http://www.celtasoft.nildram.co.uk/cars/dmon/zolder/Racewars%202006%20040.jpg

Bridgestone (cant remmeber model), nice feeling, cant remember smoke levels.

Avon ZZ3, quite smokey if I remember correctly.

Eagle F1s :wack:

Ones I don't recommend:

Nankangs!!!!! I was at Croix en Ternois in France, had at least another 2 hours worth of drifting available to me, got down to the set of Nankangs that I'd taken with me, did 4 laps and came in. I actually preferred to STOP drifting than to carry on driving on those tyres. They were **** with a capital W. Shite. Hate them.

Yep, for fast big angle stuff. Its easier on tyres with less grip though.

For drifting Pirelli PZero nero's delaminate in a matter of minutes. Add them to my shitlist :D

Lenagh
06-11-2006, 17:57
I must admit I have them and also hate them with a passion all they did was understeer on the front for me and die quickly at the back.

Hey Dave  , twas a really good day, the jag (gordon) rocked...

I was on some pirellis/dunlops/michilins/kuhmos that day. I personally found the dunlops ('sports contact' or something??) the best out of the lot... But toyo's are my all time favorite

I used some bridgestones the other week and actualy got big big smoke. Was the first time i've used 18's though and at 245 wide. Still was most impressed :D + it was just after i made a mistake and near bent my car so foot was well planted :D

Got it on vid but its one of those primative old fasioned camcorders that don't plug into computers
