View Full Version : It's gotta be Jap, It's gotta be RWD, It's gotta be cheap..
Possibilities thus far;
AW11 MR2
AE86 Corolla (If I can find a cheap enough one.)
FC RX-7 Non-Turbo. (Doubt I could insure it, but they're cheap enough..)
Other thoughts? :)
Old shape Supra 3.0i non-turbo? :D

Jeff's got a point as well, especially if you can find a 2.0 DOHC 16v, as they actually have more power and torque than the 1.8 turbo :D
Sadly they're much rarer :(
I think Starions are reasonably inexpensive?
Old Celica Supra is probably pretty cheap too. May be worth looking at Classic insurance if you get something that old?
S12's are also pretty nasty to insure :(
Got a quote of £1100 for an '89 FC RX-7 though :D
MR2 was £1200
AE86 was £1k.
Sure as hell beats £2k+ for my S13 :(
Not too keen on the old old Supras, Paz and I were looking at them, and hmm.. Nah..

Oh yeah, completely forgot about them - I love the styling, and they are very cheap, I looked at one a while ago. And the 2.8 engine is certainly nothing to be sniffed at :D
Very agressive and very cool
This Toyota Celica Supra 2.8i is on the Autotrader for £1200, with 76k miles one the clock!

And there's another very similar one for £1495 ;)
Old shape 300zx's are pretty cheap as well (to buy at least).
Try getting some quotes from Classic insurers, can be quite cheap if you're willing to limit your annual milage I beleive :)
Best of luck what ever you decide on D mate :)

dunno D, i had one up til a few months ago and loved every minute of it - really comfortable, really good drive - and it oversteered like a b*tch!!! lol
really miss it now you know
Mitsi Lancer?, very old one, my cousin used to have one, it was great, RWD and went like stink, rusted to bits though, hehe, or if you're feeling really really mad.... Suzuki Cappuchino, Honda Beat (etc)

Er, cheers m8. I was actually serious tho :D
Pretty sure some companies will give classic insurance once a cars 10 years old, let alone 15. Gonna look into it when I renew my S13 :)

Mitsubishi did a few cars with the (170bhp?) Starion Turbo engine in I think, including Galant and Sapporo which were both RWD AFAIK :) By lucky (?) to find one tho ;)
Neighbour of mine has something called a Mitsi Cordia, it has 'turbo' on the back and looks weird but that's about all I know about it!
How old and agricultural are you prepared to put up with D!?
Car needs to cost no more than £1500.
Preferably around the £1000 mark.
It needs to be cheaper insurance than the 200, obviously. Manual is no problem, as shock horror! I'm going to learn them gear thangs ;)
Really do like the FC's, but the insurance is still a little too much, hm, and repair bills could be horrendous. I am driving SO much less now up in Manchester though, after doing 17k miles since February
Hmmm..

I think your best bet is the Mk1 MR2 as there are a lot more to choose from so you can get a good example. Also its more of a novel prospect having a mid-mounted engine and only 2 seats. See if you can get the targa version too for fun in the summer. Altho no doubt some to55er will throw a can of coke in through the passenger window :/
Hm, the MR2 is still going to be less than affordable to insure I fear. I'm so going to end up in some little euro scrabblewagon :(
However;

:D :D :D
hehe, a Honda :
S800
The S800 was introduced to the world in 1966. For this displacement increase, there would be some significant styling changes to both the front and rear of the car, while again being available in either roadster or coupe form.
The displacement was increased to 791cc which resulted in 70 hp at 8000 rpm. The S800 reached 100 mph and still boasted 35 mpg. The first 752 convertibles and 242 coupes continued the chain rear drive and independent rear suspension of its predecessors. For the next 604 roadsters and 69 coupes, Honda replaced the rear chain / suspension configuration with a more conventional live rear axle located by four radius rods and a panhard rod, while retaining four wheel drum brakes. Thereafter, front disk brakes replaced the four-wheel drum setup, while continuing the live rear axle for the remainder of the production run.
The next significant change came in 1968 with the introduction of the S800M version. Aimed at the American market, Honda made changes to include flush door handles, side marker lights, dual circuit brakes, varied taillight configurations to suit different markets, safety glass, leaner carburetion, and more. (They went so far as to show a "USA Model" in the parts catalogues and owner's manuals, but no S800s, or for that matter any S series cars, were ever officially imported into the US for retail distribution.)
All the changes were in vain, however, as the high revving engine produced too many hydrocarbons. New safety and emissions regulations were being introduced and the S800 did not measure up. Without the support of the American market, Honda ceased production of the S800 in May 1970.
mmmm, 70BHP at 8000 Revs, through a live axle in a car that weighs less than your average packet of crips, this little monster would be fun fun fun fun fun.....
Was going to suggest that too - 8000rpm  roller bearing crank means no worrying about big ends going
8k rpm not something you see often in a 200sx then???? aaah good old swift, well not when I heard it at 8250 rpm on that Rolling road
Dave
8000rpm with our big ends? You must be joking :D
:D
Im looking forward to enjoying rebuilding every 2k miles soon :)
Must get some cash :(
Dave
I reckon an old s12 would give best vfm if you can afford the insurance. Unless you can sort out the MR2 it's still gonna look like a feckin hairdressers car. The AE86 would be my choice but you try and find one in good nick for under £2000!
Have a look here:

If you are brave enough you can get some real bargains on here! Anyone used them?

An old Datsun? My m8 used to have one of some description, a Sunny I think. It was pre FWD. Despite only having a 1300 engine he could get the tail out with 3 in the back due to crap tyres and the very short ratio 4 speed box..
I think those Datsun 510's that are still popular for restoring in the US look nice. Easy target for the SR swap too ;)

Try this lot for MR2 insurance.
MK1's are a bit underpowered but great fun,
