You could build a spanking new one for £400.

You'd be able to get sommat like this:-
AMD athlon 1600XP
256mb DDR RAM
56x CDrom
30gig HDD
17" Monitor
64mb Graphics
etc

I can supply you with copies of Win XP, Office XP, Encarta for the price of a round of beers.

I always use www.ebuyer.com, if u want to know what bits to get and how to build it, I can advise.

Or I can build u one and courier it to you for about £460.

Or look in loot

Sorry to jump on the thread but i need Just a P4 1.3gig (at least) processor and motherboard to go with it with ddr ram slots to fit in an atx case. Is my atx power supply good enough 300w i think?
I have hd, monitor, cd writer etc just wondering if i can just do that?

Yep u can.

I'd get an AMD XP processor and main board though, it'll save u a fair bit of ££ and probably go a bit faster.

HTH.

But i heard the AMD`s needed a much bigger power supply??
hmm think i can get the p4 cheap too with huge heatsink+fan :)

What motherboard/chipset am i looking at for p4 with ddr ram - on board monitoring would b cool too :D

Either way you will need either a P4 certified or AMD certified PSU. The P4s have another power connector as well so not just any old PSU.

300W is fine.

All the PC's I build have a 300W supply.

You can get this board/cpu/fan for about £125 delivered

Board

CPU

Otherwise, there should be nowt wrong with one of these

You can get a 400w approved PSU for about £15 or a new case with a PSU installed for about £20.

300w should be fine unless you are going for REALLY power hungry components. Many people fail to realise the importance of a decent power supply and the problems they can cause. Quite often random crashes / lockups can be attributed to poor power supplies.

Yep, power supply is often overlooked! I'm lucky, my one seems to handle a monitor and usual stuff, fine. Also stoped all the case fans and the motherboard fan has conked out! So all round its also a hot PC!

I've been woken up in the morning with the motherbaord beeping

Starionman, that is well, a bit expencive, you can get a new pc for around £300 and software is free if ya know what i mean

;)

True, but it won't be very good.

That £400 is for something with a bit of oomph.

I was recently doing a spot of research for a friend who wanted a cheap but reasonable upgrade to their current PC. All they needed was a base unit (keeping current monitor, k/b, rodent, software, etc.) that could play some of the latest games and do all the usual productivity stuff - kids homework, internet access etc.

Budget was £250

This is what I came up with for him:

NB. First price is excl of VAT.

AMD ATHLON XP1600+ 266GHz FSB £40.88 (£48.04)
Coolermaster DP5-6J31C Fan AMD Approved Upto XP & MP 2100 £4.48 (£5.27)
Asus A7N266-VM SKT A Integrated NVIDIA GeForce2 Graphics ALC650 audio with SPDIF £51.26 (£60.24)
JNC 8850 Nokia Style ATX Full Midi Tower Case & 300W PSU £17.18 (£20.19)
256MB DDR PC2100 RAM £45.51 (£53.48)

Total £159.31 (£187.22 )

I charged him a crate of ale to build it for him - so new system cost less than £225! Plus when he gets round to it he has a second base unit on hand which with a few peripherals can be the start of a small home network. Bargain!!

The moral of the story?? Shop around!

Good luck with your search.

Winterfell, where are those bits brought from??

The only big cost will be a screen, so you really are better off finding someone to build a new 1 for ya.

All those bits are from E-Buyer - as are these

Rodents are cheap - £4.99 for a Memorex USB Optical mouse.

K/B - £2.29 for E-Buyers own multimedia/internet one with more spangly programmable buttons than you can shake a stick at :)

Monitor is about £125 for a CTX 17" with 3 yr on-site warranty.

A new monitor will (as you can see) seriously dent a budget but if you look in free ads theres always a bunch of 17"/21" monitors for sale.

Pauly_Boy

yeah, monitors never really seem to get any cheaper!

bugger eh, anyway, i supose if they'd developed at the same speed as cpu's we'd beable to by a 240x240 inch screen for £90
