View Full Version : Woooo, another newbie
Hi guys,
Just thought I'd introduce myself before I started making countless "What to look for when buying" threads.
I currently drive a Rover 220 GSi but as I'm 21 in a week am looking for something with a bit more grunt. Test drove a Rover 420 GSi Turbo which I thought was rapid (and fun to let the DV off when passing people) but I really fancy something a bit different after owning 3 Rovers.
I've always had a soft-spot for the S14a's and hope you guys can help me with any questions I have.
Cheers.
Personally, I'd not go from a shopping trolley to a turbo'd RWD car at 21, and particually this time of year. I'm not saying you will crash, but the odds are stacked against you. From experiance and seeing many others before you ....
Buy a 325i or other non turbo RWD car, and after winter, if you have kept it out of a ditch then look at a S14.
First up. Welcome!
I'm not so sure on the above....
I went from a 206GTi to a 250bhp S14a and have never had any problems.
If you drive it like a knob it will punish you.
I've had a few 'wobbles' but if you have your wits about you then i see no problem.
Common sense says in this weather don't plant it in corners, even in a straight line in the first gears.
We should not be so eager to put the fear of god into anyone looking to buy a 200 in the winter, and age has nothing to do with how sensible you are on the road.
Fair enough, lifting off when going past people is a little immature, but we have all did it!
also look into insurance first aswell, ive heard 21 Year olds and such paying in excess of £2k for insurance
welcome:wave: good luck in your search:thumbs:

have to agree with what SM says but also the above, i went from a Calibre
4x4 turbo to my s13. must admit thought i could drive and the 1st morning i got my sx i 180'd it on a roundabout in the wet luckly it was at 6:30am on a sat morning so no one around, kinda learnt from there on , you do have to watch what your doing but it's all a learning curve and we all gotta start somehwhere, if you get one just be carefull with the rightfoot.
welcome to SXOC :sxoc:
Thanks for the welcome guys.
SM, I've given that some serious thought myself, but I'm not in a position to buy the car at this moment in time. I'm going to save up quite a bit of money before I even start looking at cars just so that I know I'll be able to afford to run/service the car... the last thing I want to do is spend £4000 on a good example and then have it sitting on the driveway for 3 months while I save up for another month of running the thing :indiff:
I'll probably start looking around in Feb/March by which time I'll have 3 years NCB and the crappy winter weather should have passed us.
I'm actually a damn sight more cautious than some of my friends and won't even boot the 220 around bends in the wet (and it's lowered with strut braces so nice and tight) so if I keep my wits about me and just remember what kind of car I'm driving, I'll be sensible with it.
Davie, yeah lifting off is immature, but it was the first turbo'd car I've driven (so the OMGTURBO factor was huge, lol) and being a 420... well, they only built 250 of them from the factory so they're very rare. Certainly turned heads! Some people looked rather shocked to see this old grandad Rover coming down the road.
Monkey, I did a few quotes for the 420 Turbo and they came back at £1000 with 3 years NCB. I'd expect the 200SX to be about £1500 given the extra performance and RWD. What insurance group are they?
Richy, believe it or not, the Rover is actually quite fun to drive (I'm a bit of a Rover fanboy though, heh). Will certainly miss its stealth factor when it goes.
Once again, cheers for the welcome :)
depending on the company (underwriter not broker), the s13 is grp 15-16 and the s14 17-18
I went from a saxo 1.1 to s13 lol. had a few lairy moments but i reckon if you respect it, you'll be fine. when i first got the car i was told it was group 16, after phoning Norwich Union they informed me it was group 17:eek:, werent up for insuring me on it either until i said i had just bought it and needed to drive it home! was 20 then tho
Don't get one they're shit:smash:
six wheel drive is the way to go:wave:

Everyone from Overclockers is welcome ;)
I wouldn't worry too much, so long as you're sensible you'll be fine. I upgraded from a micra > s14a @ 23/24 and I've been fine (driving gently)....
Everyone from Overclockers is welcome ;)

Ahhhh. Suprised you remember me, having not posted in a while.
Unless you just read it every now and then. I get absolutely slated in almost every Rover thread... it's great :D
Oh, this place is great. Loads of really interesting threads, especially the 'Useful Threads' thread.
