We had a letter through this morning from the TV license poeple. It says:

"weve been informed that you purchased a television or tv compatable graphics card and that you arent registered as having a colour TV licence at that address"

"Weve been informed"

It came through in my g/friends name, the tv licence is in my name.

The only thing we have bought recently was a video from Comet. They must have sent our details to the TV licence people

Feck, watch out, big brothers everywhere.

Scary ****, they even keep records of your electrical purchases!!!

Tis the law now that when you buy a TV reciver equipment you have to give your address which is then checked agains the TV licence database.

Your girlfriend will have given her name and address when buying the video recorder and coz the licence is in your name and not hers you got a letter.

I'd gladly not watch BBC 1 + 2 to prevent paying the TV liciense price, I already pay for SKY. But do I have a choice - NO! What a scam.

Well you would have to be a bit thick to give them your address if you dont have a licence... like my girlfriends mum! Oops, conviction + fine.

They must be targeting Bradford... may be their is a lot of licence evation?

They publish who has been got with out a licence and 90% or them are women

point is you should have a choice. People with sky consciously make a decision to pay for it. BBC is compulsory for everybody. I know my nan doesnt make use of the bbc interactive website ********. but she still has to pay for it. Nor does she have the latest receiver to pick up digital channels.

They had a spell in Birmingham recently where they hired out roadside ad signs and posted up on there 'in Acacia Avenue (or whatever) in Erdington (or whatever) there are 3 houses without tv licenses - we are watching you' etc. Talk about strong arm tactics!

I find it really funny you need a license to own a TV...

If its power is supllied by its own self contained batteries then you dont need a licence. i.e. pocket TV's

If its pluged into your car or is built into it you are probably still covered by your home licence as it temporariy away from your home.

in theory the license pays for the running of the BBC... but you could argue you bought a VCR because terrestrial TV is so appalling that you'd rather watch videos from blockbusters therefore why should you pay for a tv license? (it's not like a tv license means that you're fit to own a tv and don't abuse the tv!) :D

Coz you would have bought a Video that is play only rather than record and play. Dont need a licence for them :)

However thay are few of them about coz they are a bit usless as most videos are used to time shift TV programes.

On a side note the UK has the most video's per head of population in the world... becuase of only having a few TV channels (up untill a few years ago) most video where bought to time shift TV progs.

When I purchased my first house I didn't move in straight away, while I did a few jobs on it.

In this time I received quite a blunt letter from the TV licensing peope, basically saying that I didn't have a license for a TV, and that I should return the form to buy one, or sign and return another form saying I would not be having a TV, or further action would be taken.

I thought a few things: the first was F*** you :) and the second was how did they even know I had bought the place - just how many different people pass information onto them? and how much power does this (now private?) company have?

In the end ignored the letter, and heard nothing more, so they were just trying it on I reckon. Did buy a licence before bringing over my TV though :)

Cheers, Phil

Up untill i was 16, we didn't have a TV. During this time my Dad was approached by the TV license people and told to buy a licence or face prosecution, but they wouldn't listen to fact we didn't have a TV. Ended up going to court about it, where the case was dimissed and my dad got an apology from them when the judge heard we didn't have a TV.

reminds me of that TV advert, where the guy videos a chicken cooking in the microwave, then puts in on so that his TV in the kitchen looks like a microwave... :)

Unbelievable, what a waste of time/money!

So, if you own a TV then you must have a licence whether you watch BBC or not, because the TV is capable of recieving the signal. So, basically, if you own a product that can use a service someone provides, by law you have to pay for the service whther you use it or not (in the case of the BBC). Well, I wonder if Bren could make it law that all 200SX owners HAVE to pay him money? After all, you (most of you) own a product (200SX) that can use a service someone provides (Bren supplying parts, for example;)) whether you want it or not. By the way, if the law gets passed, I want 50% thanks Bren :p
