currently running amd xp1600+ on a sis 735 mainboard,256mb ddr ram, this board supports 4xagp and would like to spend no more than £250
been looking at 4600ti g4 128ram
but can anyone tell me another card or is this good enough;)
would like to have a good driver support also
If you want good driver support, then atm Nvidia are your answer :) Go for the ti4600 you won't regret it. although having said that, apparently you can get a Radeon 9700 Pro for around £260 from CCL computers??? It's a beast of a card!

Personally not sure about spending so much on a graphics card, especially as they seem to like, double in power every 6-12 months or so. Anyway a Radeon 9700 Pro is £226+VAT from Crucial www.crucial.com/uk - this is the fastest chipset currently available. Theres a new GeForce due end of this year or more likely early next.
Or you could get an Albatron Ti4200P Turbo 128mb from Tekheads http://www.tekheads.co.uk/tekheads/product?id=601175 this will easily clock to Ti4600 speeds and is only £126+VAT
Aaah Crucial, thats where it was, not CCL :) Saw it on the avforums earlier today and forgot where it was :)
Yep, Nvidia should have the NV30 out around christmas :) Mmmmmm creamage ;)
I got 3D Mark 2001 score of 5500 on an 800 duron and Ti4200 which cost £120
As a (rough) comparision, my mate gets just over 10000 with his Athlon XP 1600+ and Ti4600 which cost him £199.
Hope your not dissapointed with any upgrade. I spent 350 squid on a GF3 when it first came out to move on from an old GF1 ddr board.
To say I wasn't impressed with the increase in speed was the understatement of the year. Well at least not considering how much I spent on that and other components during the upgrade.
Buy for value I reckon.
Nvidia still have the best support and driver set but that 9700 is out in front with the fps.
Now I am on Lunix and can't play any games becuase it is the sux and only has GLtron and pingu racer :D
You can also play many Quake, QII and QIII engined games on Linux, not to mention UT and UT2003.
I'm playing UT2003 on it atm (demo) not got around to paying for the full version. Maybe in 2005 after I repay the bill for the car mods :D
Mind you I have RH8 and you have to do all sorts of crazy whack ass compiling of src rpms and stuff and haxoring your xfree86 configs to get them nvidia drivers working. It ain't like my texas instruments speak and spell NO SIR !

Len, you are quite mad (but I mean that in a nice way :D ). When did you do your clear sides then? Still going Monday night BTW?

Ive got an ati radion 8500 there getting well cheap now top card just make sure they have the latest drivers, Allthough at the end of the day it depends what u want to do with the card, I run all my games at 1024x768x32 and get a good frame rate the latest cards are really good but if your not gonna run games with full detail on your not gonna need one
For reference,
XP2100+ @ 1820Mhz
512MB DDR PC2700
Gigabyte GA7VRXP rev 2.0
Sparkle GF4 ti4600
XP SP1
I get 12500 3dmarks :)
I paid £330 for this geforce4 and it was a HELL of a big increase performance wise from my Geforce2 GTS. Len, I reckon the rest of your pc must have been holding you back to not notice much difference!!!! One of the reasons Im sticking with XP and not Linux at the moment it the lack of bf1942 client for Linux :D
Dave
I went from a 1ghz athlon with 256mb of ram on win98 to a 1.4 ghz athlon and 768MB of ram under win2k. bare in mind this was 6 months or more ago. So I hope that the rest of the setup was not holding the card back. I liked my time on win2k as it was the most stable MS OS I have had. I'm still running the same kit but with lunix now instead. Suddenly the desire to upgrade every month has dissapeared oddly !
Maybe it was tribes 2 being coded like a bag of poo that was the problem :D
@ Stimpy - Did the clear side fronts in 2 secs. The clear sides needed some hacking and are being done tomorrow (my days off). I shall be there tomorrow too are u going ? whats homlmes and the rest of the crew doing ?
I'm going tomorrow. I presume the rest of the lads are going (except D). They haven't said anything to the contrary on the JapUK thread. Sorry for hijacking this graphics card thread with talk of meets BTW:D
