Right guys, i cant really use my car as the turbo gasket is that bad!
Where the bolts bolt into the mani from the turbo the heads have snapped of and i have a gapping big hole there! (i.e i can move the gasket up and down with my fingers!)
So because the studa are now stuck in the S/S tubular manifold im going to just get a cast iron one.
So i need an S14a standard manifold.
And someone to help change the gasket?
Matt, i know you voluntered and that would be excellent if you could help me, let me know which day of the weekend is good for you, and i'll come to yours
Tested some of the nuts to the manifold and head and they come un-done without much persuasion so thats good.
I think the gasket is re-usable as its a metal one but im going to get some extra nuts/bolts incase we strip/snap any.
Adam
try to lube your turbo elbow to front pipe nuts Adam thats where i took mine off from they were qite easy on my car. Also when you come to do it get some wd40 you will need loads of it.
If your handy with the old spanners you could do it yourself its not to hard to do.
Make sure you disconnect to lamda sensor aswell ask Matt about that

ill lend a hand mate but i think the weathers gonna get shitty tomorrow:( have you got anywhere with a cover?
Adam0bmx0
24-09-2006, 10:03
No i mean next weekend, so that means alot of cycling for me :(
Also im going to pre spray everything in WD40 a couple of times before the weekend
Adam
I think i'll be able to help you on the Saturday dude. I've got to find out if i'm needed to umpire for paintball on the sat or sun (the guy not sure yet but he thinks sunday).
Adam, I doubt you need to get a new manifold mate. I mean if it's that bad, i've give you mine and i'll take the S/S one off your hands :D :smash: ;)
You are prob gonna need to either file the edges of the bolt down to get a spanner/wrench around them OR get a stud removal tool. Suprised the heads have broken though, they normally work loose it seems; can you check you've got a turbo support bracket below the turbo please. Oh and DO buy a new gasket, you REALLY don't wanna be doing the job again mate. It looks metal but inside is a ceramic compound which crushes (then expands I think under heat) when you put it on.
EDIT: where is your car now?

My car is on my driveway.
I could re-use the stainless mani, but that would mean drilling out the snapped studs in it and re-tapping it. All of which i wont be able to do in a day!
I'd rather just be able to swap the mani there and then as i need the car.
Adam
And then do it all again when you've got the bolts out? I still think you don't need to drill them out. Is there anything left to grip?
Matthew
Adam0bmx0
24-09-2006, 11:43
No i just wouldnt bother putting it back on :)
Just looked and there's about 2mm to grip onto :(
adam
ive got a stud extractor kit and one to do rounded off bolts, nuts etc... give us a shout and you can have use of it!
To be honest adam, if your not gonna be using the car for a week, you may as well just start the job! I've give you a hand getting all the stuff out in a evening dude. What evenings are you free? (If i go in for 7:30 at work I can leave at 3:30 to give you a hand)

I was also gona stay at the missis' this week so its easeir for me to get to uni and not have to ride as far so dont know how much if this week i'l be at home.
Adam
I could prob pick you up and drop you back you fool. Stops looking for excuses to stop getting your lovely red hand printed overall's dirty.

you need to weld another bolt on and then use that to undo them. if you cant get the stud extractor on, i knoe theres not much clearance between the nunts and the turbo.

if you take all the induction bits off it makes it a lot easier for when we do start the job. take everything off that you can near the turbo, i know the s14 ones are much more difficult to get to than s13.
Adam0bmx0
24-09-2006, 15:30
Yea, i can get all the unduction stuff off easy enough as i had it off just the other day.
Ok, i'll make a start on it and if i get stuck etc then will ask for help.
Im going to just get the standard manifold put back on as its less hassle for me.
I'll let you know how i get on guys.
Also matt, when you took the turbo out, did you leave the downpipe on and undo the bolts in front of the CAT taking it out all in one go?
Adam

If your sure that's what you want to do Adam, it's no prob with the standard mani, just a shame to do it and downgrade your car (although it may actually make it run better if you've only got standard boost).
Ok.. i 'had' to take the whole lot out in one piece as the bolts on the turbo elbow/downpipe where siezed totally. (believe me i had it out before on the ground and with a long bar I couldn't undo them!). I have pics but i took out the manifold/turbo/elbow/downpipe in one piece up through the engine bay. it was very very heavy leaning over the car trying to squeezed and coerce the whole lot out. I whole heartadly recommend you soak the 3 bolts/nuts with wd40 for a few days just in case so you don't have to do this.
Oh and importantly :-
1) unplug the lambda (it's a pain though) and bring it out with the elbow/turbo. don't unscrew it.
2) don't undo the elbow, that's another expensive gasket!
3) put something under the car (big piece of cardboard) to catch the oil/water :)
I'm sure i will be around for most of it but just in case you go mad and try to do the lot without any help!
Matthew
p.s. you should have my phone number, if not pm me :)

Ok thanks for ther info matt
I know its a downgrade, but apparantly if your not running 350+bhp, you loose some low down torque with a tubular mani. I think thats what i read somewhere.

I think i said that :p. but there is a power threshold for the s/s manifolds I hear. Would be good to get some data on it though on a standard car, with and without.

Right im stuck, i've had a good stab at it but im struggling here.
So far i've got all the induction system out the way, lambda disconnected, one of the water feeds disconnected and loosend all the manifold bolts bar the to at either end as i need a deep 14mm socket.
I also can't get the fooking downpipe bolts off or to move so was thinking of taking the downpipe out with the turbo like you did matt as i cant see any other way.
So was wondering if anyone could give me a hand and lend me a deep 14mm socket? :sxoc:
Adam :)
Ads that what i did its easier to take the lot out
I haven't got a deep 14mm though mate:(

ill have a check for a deep 14 tomorrow for you mate, its my day off so if i have ill drop it over:)
Nutter. Why didn't you give me a call you moof? Just like Channie... struggle struggle .. when all you have to do is ask for help *Sheesh!*
I can't help you tomorrow as I've got music praccy at 7:30pm and i've promised steve i'll help him with his intake pipe.
IF YOU WAIT TILL THURSDAY.... that's THURSDAY.. i'll help you do the whole lot Adam. You'll need to jack the car up anyway if you are gonna try and take the downpipe out in situ. Plus i recommend some help otherwise you'll end up scraping everything up and breaking your back, but hey.. don't take my word for it  :whip:
(just read ferrets post.. i'll still come over thursday regardless)
Matthew
Would do the intake pipe myself but some dodgy Londoner still has my socket set :p (glances at Channie).
If you want a tea maker & mascot on Thursday I'm more than willing to ferry cups back and forth from the kitchen tho.

Oh... are you getting this today, or do i need to whip home first to get my socket set?
Matthew
Depends on whether you can beat Channie up until he opens his boot :)
Go pester him while you are skiving at work ;)

I think i may have some spare studs/nuts/bolts for the turbo. They might not be good enough though as it was for the elbow side. We will have to see :) When is your gasket likely to arrive?
Adam0bmx0
27-09-2006, 13:56
Today or tomorow hopefully.
Also do you have an angle grinder, as need to take a bit of metal back where the exhaust was touching as i think this is what cause the bolts on the front of the mani to snap.
I'll explain better tomorow
Also, on the way to mine could you pick me up? :D
I finish uni at 5, so either from there or from K's house which is in saltash from about 5:30
Not to much to ask 'eh!
Oh, and i need a deep 14mm socket to for the last 2 manifold bolts, al, you say you have one, could i meet you at uni tomrow and get it? also what drive is it?
Adam
Oh bugger - missed the delivery for my intake pipe, and I can't collect it for 24 hours apaprently :( You're off the hook for tonight Matt :p

sorry mate, couldnt find a deep socket. only got normal ones and my phone was being gay so i couldnt let you know earlier!
I have some I do believe - get Matt to grab em off me tomorrow. By deep I'm taking it you mean about 2 inches or so? (and no sexuxal references :p )

Right got my manifold off INTERCOOLED tonight so a huge thank you to him as he gave it to me for free :notworthy
One problem is though there is a stud missing from it so im going to need one of these, no one in plymouth has one lying about by any chance do they? :wack:
Matt, are we still on for tomorow?
oh, you said you had a turbo elbow stud, well it looks like i could use that for the mani to turbo as bren listed it here;
"manifold to turbo or turbo elbow to turbo studs £2 each"
Adam

Ok, so do u want to pick my up from K's house in saltash?
I wont be at home, only here (k's) or uni in plymouth.
If you want to pick my up from saltsh then you can from the top of Fore street, it the main shopping road bit, it's 1st left as you come off the tamar bridge.
Adam
ok.. will go to my garage and have a scoot around for the bolts. Hmm.. just realised i forgot to get any work clothes. Might have to pop home anyway to get a shirt or something. Will pick you up in Saltash :)

Ok cool, i just bought a deep socket set from halfrauds so thats sorted, just need that stud really or i'll need to order one from apex and it'll take a few days :(
See you in saltash, i'll text you when i get there, should be around 5:30-ish but might finish my last uni lecture ealier, but will have to wait and see.
Adam
ok stage 1 complete... the stuff is out :D we could have gone further but i forgot to go to my garage on the way over.. meaning i didn't take the studs he needed. Not a problem though, as Adam needs some gaskets first before refitting :)
Turbo looks in pretty good condition, very little if any play :)

Well what a fooking mission that was, at least we got there in the end, and at one point i thought matt was dying under the car!! lol
Matt, let me know if you find that stud and any other little bolts/nuts you may have.
And thank you for your help :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

lol.. i thought i'd gone and given myself a hernia lol. Felt really nasty like something had torn. Thankfully the pain went after 10 mins ish, so just think i had a big girls blouse experience :wack:
Those bolts/nuts/studs AND some expensive new locking tabs are hidden in either my tool kit, or at my garage. I will get them don't you worry me boy.
Oh and... i had half of your drive in my hair i discovered. Not the best drive in the world. Seriously think it needs a good few sweeps! :whip: ;)
As for the other thing you offered.. i'm sending you a pm :)
Matthew
Adam - drive space is cleared and ready for you if you and K want to park up there today :)
Come to think of it, its been clear since Wednesday ;)

29-09-2006, 11:06
thank you steve
Well, we got to the space and guess what, the missis couldn't get in it!! :wack:
She hates parking at the best of times, but with it being wet and up that bump etc wheels spinning blah blah, she didnt like it lol.
I said i'd park it for her but then she said she'd be stuck as she wouldn't be able to get it back out!!! (i wouldn't be with her at the time,i finish uni later)
So, we had to park somewhere else and because of the time zones we need to move the car before 2 o'clock
When im in my car im sure i'll be able to get in hopefully! lol
Adam
Bugger :(
Managed to get a Supra in there before so I know theres loads of space. Other option is to move the pug & my car down a bit, giving you the wider space outside the doors.... but then you have the iron steps to contend with :)
It's actually shockingly easy to get in and out of the carport area, just takes a bit of getting used to. Easy... unless you drive a white s15 that is.

Hopefully i can get that bolt tomorow and some gasket paper if my one from Apex hasn't arrived.
Adam
You can get gasket paper from somewhere like kevin cooper's. Use the old gasket to make an accurate copy :)
OH, and I 'think' i left my jumper at your house on your mountain bike. So tired lately with this stupid cold *cough* violins please :D ;)
