After my love-tap with the Armco at the nurburgring it seemed daft to repair the old shell. It was the worst part of my S13, and it showed in how much the chassis flexed.
Goodbye G848 ECW  it will have a final "bow-out" in full battle-scar mode at the Apex trackday and then will be stripped.

The old S13 came a VERY long way in a very short time, not without the help of the SXOC and in particular Graham @ TopGearNW where the S13 almost lived on his ramp, and the board traders Bren and Gary, for supplying many a "go-faster" part. I'll make a quick list but boud to miss somebody. Thanks for help, parts or advise ---- Yak, Buffy, Marty_T3, Petrol, Stone, ShawJohn, Nismo Pete, Pete@RAA, Tenman, Jez, AlanJuggler, Steve@EMS, Kev, Tony2sx, Kirunji, I_need_£, Lennie, Sideways Danny, Staff of Apex, APT, & TopGearNW
Spec is/was considerable, I think quite a few of you followed its progress in this thread (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=183802) and will know how much joy it brought me - even some silverware :D

So all this stuff will be swapped to the new S13.
Some of you may recognise it, its was OniOnes until the engine blew up, it was then sold to Mellon Stu to use as a new project, but he has kindly changed his plans and sold it to me :D Its in very good nick. It is an auto :hurl: but that can easily be fixed :D
some Quotes from people who have seen it
I have seen this shell and can testify that this is, indeed, a 100% spangly shell. You won't find another one in this condition
It's just a shame the engine's so fecked :wack:
Then Mellon Stu bought it
The shell is nye on immaculate mate, couldn't believe it when it turned up. The sills i'm 99% sure are original, and they're as smooth and rot free as you could hope for.
The chassis rails are unbent, no evidence that it's been jacked up off them for most of its life like most S13's.
There's a couple of really minor dings in it, nothing serious, barely noticable in fact.
The suspension turrents are immaculate i shit you not. It's a very clean car
The only rotten bit is the tailgate, which is a bit worse for wear.
I'll get you some pics later on mate, it really is immaculate, i figured it might interest you, especially with the amount of trackwork you do as it's a nice rigid straight example :) you'll be amazed when you look underneath it, this is my 6th and you know how long i've been bashing away at them, it's honestly one of the cleanest i've seen, certainly one of the least rusted ones.
.... it is indeed lacking in rust  A few little dings here and there, the tailgate needs welding and the rear bumper needs a respray, but overall it's in good nick. It's almost too good to be turned into a a battered track slag  :p
And Yak, Bren, Petrol and Marty_T3 saw the pics and said something along the lines of ..
Feck me thats well clean! Under the bonnet its cleaner than mine! If you dont go for that one you DO need a slap.
Well MONSTER post, wish me luck !!
Best of Luck with the resurection:thumbs:
One question though
In the first pic , I uderstand all the silver gaffer tape type stuff holding everything together, But what are the fecking huge bolts through the front bumper for:confused:

I hope the transition to the new S13 goes nice and smoothly :)
By the way, the links on the pictures are 404s :p
arse, I'll edit the link to .jpg from .JPG
Yak can take the abuse ;)
good luck with it Kev - usual offer of help applies:)
Nice one Kev  Probably a blessing in disguise :D The shell on the silver car was always going to be a battle ;)
No bodgetastic stuff on this new project please, it used to look like this :p :D

Hey, its in clean but 4*4 mode.
NO! bumper mods are planned :wack: Unless charge temps or water temps become an issue. My truck-sized rad should sort the water temp problems ;) I'll try and keep it as clean as what it deserves to be. Also it wont be a straight swap of mods, a little more than that is planned ;)
Cheers Bob

where you come off at the ring? what happened? how much did they charge for the armco repair? my mate just got raped for the repair bill after stuffing his car into it.

hope she serves you well kev
the back bumper doesn't really need a respray, it has 2 scrapes, but it's faded, just needs cutting back and lacquering really.
I'll give her a wash and take some proper pics for you. It's in great nick
As for welding the tailgate, i wouldn't bother, it's proper fcuked, get an FRP one and a perspex screen for it  :D the rest of the chassis, and bodywork, is in superb condition, not seen many as clean in recent years that are original
Bennettettett seemed very impressed with it :)
Dont go changing your mind again :smash:
Cant afford FRP one, and plastic windows arent allowed in my sprint class. Looks like it wil get my current bootlid then, as thats not too bad.
I did minimal damage to the armco @ 'ring, £305.

you made a bit of a mess of that poor s13 didnt you  :smash:
looks like a very solid base for a track car  , i almost got a grey automatic that was totally rust free before i got mine and had the intention of converting to manual but decided against it in the end, starting to wish i hadnt looking at my sills
im assuming there are going to be a few more track specific modifications carried out to this one then ;)
after elvingotn at the weekend is it going to be the end of the 2006 track season for you and do this project over winter or are you going to want it done asap to get a few more trackdays in this year :D

that really looks clean SM! And at least now you have the nicer looking model! :p
how long are guestimating its going to take to get it all swapped over ect?
Paul
Hopefully wont take too long, back by 2007
Dont want to seem funny, but whats the point? a year or 18 months down the road and you'll be wanting another one ffs :whip:
3 years down the line you will be complaining as you cant get a good shell  There isnt an endless supply you know :annoyed:
All that said. Good luck with the new one and may it bring as much joy as the old
Have fun Kev
Er not sure what your point is Paul, be sure I'm very pissed off at writing the S13 off, lots of time effort blood and sweat of mine and others have gone into it this year.
I have no aims to require another at any point in time, yes it will get driven hard on track, and raced hard, but crashing and writing off the shell isnt planned. I'm certainly not going to drive miss daisy because of the crash though - theres no point in that. no theres isnt an endless supply, but are you suggesting I sell the £6K worth of parts for my S13 and pack up trackdays and racing ? Quit the SXOC and sit on my arse forever to make sure I dont scratch another?
Maybe I'm reading you post wrong
Ok, can people stop front ending there S13's! making it very hard for me to get a set of wings! :D
p.s. Kev - keep doing track days! Some people enjoy looking and polishing there cars, some people enjoy driving them hard.
Col
Maybe I'm reading you post wrong
I read it the same Kev
Cars are for using, if they get crashed then it's a shame, but it happens.
Sorry if you read it the wrong way Kev
It was meant as tongue in cheek poke at make sure you dont do it again, nothing sinister, I promise :)
EDIT: Maybe I should stay away until theses pills wear off a bit :D
it aint like nissans are rare or collectable.....
if in doubt, flat out eh mate:thumbs:
make it lighter, faster and meaner for those sprints.
Good luck with the new one, I suppose I can have my oil breather back now :D :wack:
Good luck with the new one, I suppose I can have my oil breather back now :D :wack:
Er.... yes :wack:
Craig - Yeah, thought about seam welding but want to keep the same sprint class. I'll read up the rules as get as close as I easily can though ;)
Paul - no worries, text is crap to show emoticons, even with smilies its hard to tell if somebody is joking or serious, no problem
Top news mate, good luck with it :)
€195 for admin tho!! Fecking cheeky if you ask me
You still going to set fire to passengers in this new one Kev
SparkyHX is banned from my passenger seat :p 2 passengers rides, 1 split rad and one fire :wack: so on the fire/water/earth elements next time I'll end up in a field, on my roof.

:o not a problem mate, couldn't be arsed to build it into what i wanted, and the GTR is lusting for some mods, and paying off, so it seemed a good idea to offer it to you after the bump at the nurburgring really and save it from being sat on my drive for ages :)
I bought the wrong car :D That looks in really good nick

 looking good, it'll be interesting to see how much of the flex was down to the crap shell and how much was down to just s13s being a bit floppy.
mine isn't too bad round corners, but when power comes on, it feels like it's got loads of twist in it. not sure how much of that is down to suspension and how much is down to the shell.
Its like Xmas .... either a little late or VERY early :D

However time attack will take all my funds I guess, I'll try and 3 sisters and defend my large trophy :D but other than that unless somebody wants to pay my entry & costs, or I win the lottery I think that will be it. £780+VAT for the TA07 entry fees, and over £3K on the car ..........
our championships not goin to 3 sisters this year, but we are at aintree april 28th (think you did it last year?).
is there a link or vids for time attack? would like to see what its all about, is it just jap stuff?
http://www.timeattack.co.uk/home.asp ;)
I'll do as many loton events as I can afford, but that may be zero :wack:
cheers Yak.
loadsa shiny stuff on the site but not too much on what you have to do. took me a while to pick the bones out of it, but from what i can work out it is sprinting, but within a much more media friendly package.
In trems of runs what do you get? is it standing start single lappers?
From the pre registering documentation it a rolling start single lap for the club class and then a more complicated rolling timed laps for the pro class.
But they seem to be on the track at the same time as each other while the club class gets F1 style single timed laps.... I think.
Yeah, there is a lot of confusion about it all at the mo.
clear as mud then eh? seems to favour the invited pro class although i think the rolling starts are a bit soft..... the start to a single lap seems to be half the battle to me. Will try and come along to one to see what its like.
Hi Kev
Thanks for your mail, I have added your name to list of serious enquiries for this season events, there is a cut off date for replies of 26.01.07.
On 26.01.07 we will issue another statement basically advising if you are successful OR that you are invited to attend our pre-season qualifier..
Hope I dont need to qualify, car will be off the road all of March getting "beasted" I've spent too much money for this to not happen

What, havent you got it ready yet :smash:
Um, TBH i didn't put any timescales into consideration where I wrote that :o
Its spending all March in Norwich ;)
It will be ready bar that in 4 weeks time
TA07 is happening for me :D
Yeah :D
Craig - yeah, takes some reading but basically its sprinting with no standing start, less timed runs buts lots more practise, on circuits that are faster than most sprints, therefore suiting other types of cars, and more "modern" but also less welll organised, but IMO, with more potencial

oily tunnel, should really get it clean, however its VERY oily from the blown engine. Did the worst of it in the engine bay but I'll steam clean it before the engine gets fitted as the best plan.

Day 4 of the build...
I just had to take a picture of how blue the sky was ... before locking myself in the barn .....

Roll on Day 5
Looking good Kev
TBH I wouldn’t bother steam cleaning the tunnel, I would just wipe the bulk of the oil off with some white spirit :)
You havent seen it :wack:
I've wiped the worst off the engine bay, although it keeps leaking power steering fluid :( The Tunnel is about 1/2" deep in oil/muck/sludge, the engine must have had a leak for ages and just kept topped up, eventually leaking so much / forgetting to top up it ran out of oil and ceased.

Yeah I had to keep topping it up every other day.:( When I did the oil change on it, it leaked most of it in a few days.
However, I got brand new brake pads fitted and only did about 1000miles on them.:)
When i took the pads off they look like they were pre facelift pads as they were missing the disk in places! lol

K-sport steering wheel boss
Apex front strut brace
Will be back on the car build tomorrow

Your hole is so much neater than mine :wack: Did you find that part of the bulkhead a little flexy when you push the pedal in and out? Been meaning to try and plate mine or something for ages.
P.S. Glad to hear fitting the manual brake pedal is an arse, makes me all the more happy my auto pedal felt the wrath of the jigsaw :D
I havent used the pedal yet..... Dampers installed, slave cylinder and gearbox isnt.
I just used a 35mm hole-saw, was 2min job, nice neat hole.
More updates, its been hetic and it may look like there isnt much progress ..

Back at work tommorrow, so I'll have to do the little bits in the evening, which I was trying to avoid doing .. I was sure a week off work would be long enough
It will be ready to go to DCMS on time though, for engine fitting, and down to Garys for VEMS & mapping shortly after that.
I've failed to tackle the splitter, or brake ducting at all though :( or clean and paint the now de-soundproofed interior :annoyed:
Felt good tonight, even after being back at work, so got on with some more stuff, and picked up more goodies.
Borrowed a dremel (Cheers Bren  ) and trimmed then fitted the front bumper properly

Sparco FIA approved Seat, need a FIA one and the K-sport isnt approved :(
Also full braided hose set for the turbo.

Fire extinguisher, will be a nice fit I think
http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC0035a.JPG
Nice work mate, lots of effort going on, and great to see so much club spirit in action :)
Couple of points, looks like u have installed ur catch tank beside the front lower tie down point.
Id seriously re-consider this if i were u mate.
U want the tank as high as possible, as most of the tank filling happens with the oil sloshing out of the exhaust breather on cornering, so u want the piping etc high not low mate.
Also, clutch damper = total waste of weight time and energy, bypass it.
Myself and many others have ran this way for years with no issues, and im using the exedy paddle atm.
Fire extinguisher wont fit there if u plan on having the center console back in, and if ur not planning on the console, u need somewhere else for the fag lighter socket and also the wing mirror controls:)
We ended up putting Kierans in the rear pass side seat well, so it could be reached from the drivers seat to undo the safety catch for competition and still be sitting in the seat:)
btw who are all the ugly mugs?
i see Marty, and u and what looks like Yak's hair, but who are the rest of em ??

Did you burn the old bushes out of the rear arms and hub or press them out ? I know there's 1 bush on the hub you can't press out, just wondered about the others.
Burnt them out, then semi-sliced the metal insert with a pneumatic hacksaw, and bashed it out with a chisel and lump hammer.
I am struggling with the 3rd insert onm the hub ..... maybe I should have searched firtst :(

oh nothing, just glad to see you are keeping with rule #47
rule #47 - nothing shall be done or planned till 3 hours before its too late already
First time attack is just under 2 weeks after snetterton, timescale is fine  will be ready for the engine by weekend, and should be ready for Gary a week early ;)
We done Kierans at the weekend, i find the best way to get em out is a deep whole saw tbh.
makes short work of the bush.
Metal collar is a pain, but the last bush doesnt have a metal collar.
Kev cut the yop ring of rubber off mate and it will make things alot easier.
Also, hope u used silicin grease to insert the bush, and then white grease to insert the metal insert:wack:
Cos silicon grease turns to glue
Done the silicon glue stuff, didnt white grease the metal, went in dry :wack:
Burning with oxy-actylene made very short work of the bush.
Kev - just leave the last collar, noticed it looked bigger, I've already hacked at it
First time attack is just under 2 weeks after snetterton, timescale is fine  will be ready for the engine by weekend, and should be ready for Gary a week early ;)
Id love to come and see the first outing of the new resurrected beast.:smitten: Where the hell is Snetterton anyways?:D
Norwich, Monday 26th March
Mate their is no last collar:no:
Its simply the bush:nod:
If u cut the top ring of rubber away then remove the bush, u will see there is no collar, thats why that bush looks so much bigger than the other upright bushes even though its the same size, the top and bottom rings keep it in :)
and i would pop the metal out a bit and at least use some wd40 or grease gun grease if u dont have white grease mate, or they will be sticky and will be noisy imo

I have some white grease from the ARB install, and theres probably a pot supposed to be with the bushes at Apex but I just picked up a single pot and it happened to be the glue not the grease.

Just done a total cost to replace the car with all new mods, and all second hand mods for the insirance / agreed Value. I want an agreed Value of £7K.
The "replace with 2nd hand mods" cost is £9600, the replace with new items is £15900 !!!!
Stupid Monkey:whip: u NEVER total up the costs to u, it simply scares u shitless:nod:
I had to justify the £7K agreed value

Probably, but I dont have a grinder, and I didnt expect holes to be this much hassle :wack: but once started, I'm not being defeated :p
Lol love it :D
Similar to brens project im reading which says something along the lines of "yeah so my big mouth said id get 700bhp, so now i have to get a silly turbo on to do it"
HEhe cant beat a big of good old fashioned pig headed ness:)
this could be a very stupid question, but why are you cutting out so many holes in the bumper????
If you felt the weight of it you would know the answer ;)
The front one can be ditched completly, the rear needs retaining to hold the bumper in place.

Havent check the thread for a bit, and it looks like you have come a long way, i am very impressed. Love the swiss cheese look of the rear bumper support too :D
I wish i could offer to help but it's a little impracticle :(
your going for that morris travelor look with the wood?
Either that or its a B&Q special splitter :)
Bloody hell Kev, you've been busy!
Deadline approaches, its basically sorted / on target.
Just loads of niggling things to do (by Friday Afternoon)
Fit Diff.
Fit rear ARB
Sort Brake Lines after ABS removal.
Fit Shift-light
Refit rear bumper
Fit LC button (keep changing my mind on how)
Move Catch tank
Finish fitting FMIC
Finish Splitter
Brake Ducts
Electronics side of Auto-manual conversion (For MOT)
Clean up
No pics from today but most of rear suspension is now on, traction arms got there 2nd (maybe final) coat of paint, more holes drilled in rear bumper support.
I've got your EGT probe sitting here - where/when are you going to drill & tap it in?
Rob
If you can get it to me by Sat I'll stick it in the manifold before fitting.
Can you send it to Graham/DCMS....

Thats quite a beefy throttle body Kev - what is it from ?
also I know VEMS can use a MAP sensor , but I'd not heard of other sensors being used ?
Its a KA24 jobie
With MAP you also need MAT, to be able to work out fuelling, as pressure at 20 degrees would require more fuel then the same pressure at 40 degrees.
Temp and Pressure sensors for VEMS

is that the 4 Bar MAP sensor from VEMS ?
Are you going to use the VAG solenoid for boost control too ?
( just saw the KA24 thing in the other thread )

kev - what made you choose the VEMS over the other possibilities / sticking with the standard ecu?
tis looking good
Basically it is the same price as a PFC, but the PFC does only what a standard ECU does other than being mappable. Seemed like the best bet as I fancied the extra's anyway.
VEMS you get all the extras really cheap.... Basic unit is £350+vat, there are some things you MUST have, MAT (£20) & MAP (£42)sensors, but lots cheaper than a Z32 AFM ;)
.
Wideband - standalone cost ~£100+ Vems £65
EGT - standalone cost ~£100+ Vems £20
Launch Control - standalone cost ????? Vems - Free
Electronic Boost Controller - More sopisticated than an AVCR - standalone cost £150+ Vems £35
Shift light - standalone cost £30 - Vems - £0.99 from maplins :wack:
Turbo Friendly Anti-Lag standalone cost ????? Free with VEMS
PFC's for the CA are like hens teeth, and Gary fancied having a play with a VEMS equipped car to see how it compares to the Omex, Motec, PFC and other ECU's he does so it seemed like an option. I'm a guinea pig :p
Cliff got one for his "mad minor" and he knows a thing or 2 about ECU's so I hoped that was a good sign too ;)

Oh god, don't drag me into this........:D
I think its a good choice, as long as you (or whoever sets it up for you) knows what they're doing. Its certainly got the hardware
Car looking good Kev. I'm very impressed (jealous?) at how much you have got done in such a short time. Puts me to shame :o
Hope this isn't a silly question, but will it run those wheels or do you have something else for it?
There are two lies in that post :p see disclaimer at the bottom. No those 20" BMW 740 wheels were just passing by :p
went to the garage yesterday, and i have to say, the car is really looking well :D apart from all the crap in the sills, its very clean

Got another prototype part today, well more like the first one, rather than a prototype, as it shouldnt need any improvements.

Thermocouple looks like a reasonable place, but I wish you had showed us the inside of that manifold before - it really should have had the high spots of those welds ground back. Bit late now :(
Good progress though
Just had the list of other completed jobs ......
Brake lines completed and all brakes and clutch bled.
FMIC fitment completed (small washer bottle with custom brackets)
New brackets made for custom rad.
Strut brace fitted.
1 Wheel arch liner fitted
Split pins added for track rod ends and front hubs.
New air filter--> turbo inlet hose sorted
Oil and filter change
Other little things that take time ;)
So, left to do before close of play tomorrow ....
Seat fitting, harness fitting, steering wheel fitting, alignment setting, auto-manual electrics sorting, MOT :wack:, water system bleeding, short-shift fitting and gearbox filling. some other interior tweeks.
Massive thanks goes to the hardwork of Graham @ DCMS

as i just discovered and am doing to mine - if you paint the lagging with a high temp paint it seals it preventing fires if you sprout an oil leak and also makes it more durable. just a thought:)

A question - was the ECU plug supplied with the VEMS, or did they only supply the wiring and other plugs?
PS - Good luck getting it started tomorrow too, as it doesnt look like I'll be able to offer any more help on the electrical problem.:(

We packed up at quarter to eight last night, the ignition was sparking and we started to try and dial the timing in, I dont know if it was because it was late or because the trigger strategy is faulty that we couldn't get it to get the timing close, I have some new ideas to try so with luck next saturday will yield the result we're after:thumbs:

So what did you change to get it firing? or is it deeply technical?

I'll let you know exactly what you need to know through the VEMS forum, and I will release an upgrade specifically for you.
As for home visits, we'll worry about this if you get a problem that we can't sort by forum, email or phone.
Rob
So what did you change to get it firing? or is it deeply technical?
It was deeply simple, the outputs did not need to be inverted - which is unusual for ignition amplifiers, they normally do. Gary's mighty Oscilloscope and legendary skills pointed us in the right direction on that one:nod:
Thanks for your key turning and pedal pushing labours:thumbs:
