View Full Version : A good coupe with room for four
Can anyone give me any suggestions of a good coupe preferably or nice looking car that can comfortably carry four adults. It must have quite good performance but need not be in the 200sx league. Comfort and looks are higher up the list than performance.
The best one I can think of so far is a Cougar V6 which has loads of room, is fully loaded and is quite brisk. A Calibra V6 is also an outside contender.
I need to be able to recommend something that can be bought for about 6 to 8k when only about 3 to 5 years old.
Thanks.
A Honda Prelude? with V-TEChiness!
Good suggestion. :) Is there room for two adults in the back to be comfortable on long journeys ?
Hondas are good reliable motors as well. Scrabble wagons are no problem in this instance.
:)
A Carlton GSi3000 24v? Bags of room and pretty nippy with over 200bhp.
You'll get a cavilier v6 for cheaper or maybe a mint one for the same as an average calibra.
My pick for a family car would be the sierra cosworth  . Bags of room and the performance speaks for itself.
Oops, I just spotted that looks are on your list, probably none of the above are suitable

Or a 406 coupe (at least then you have a car that looks like an S14a at the front  ;) )
I think with any coupe, there aint goin be loads of room in the back!
R33! I could not beleive how much room they have in the back.

How about getting just a little bit further with the Carlton and buy a Lotus Carlton. Pretty nippy with over 370bhp.
Fiat Coupe's are surprisingly roomy inside
The 406 coupe is a good idea. Does anyone have actual performance figures for either the 3.0 406 or 2.5 Cougar. I don't believe the manufacturers figures in these cases.
I had thought about the fiat coupe, which has many good points, but from what I've heard from owners on their BB I could not recommend one to someone who isn't a mechanic
I had also thought about a Celica 2.0 GT. I really need to go somewhere that has them all and see how they compare for rear seat and boot space.
I heard that about the Fiat too!
My friends Celica had no more room in the back than a 200sx, but being a hatchback it had a bigger boot than an s14.
I'll get flamed for this but what about a BMW 635? They look fantastic and according to 5th gear a good one can be bought fairly cheaply. Yes I know it's a BMW, but it looks good, has RWD, goes hard and you might just be able to run it on classic insurance.
Just a thought :D

Calibra? Cougar? Personally I HATE all Fords and Vauxhalls (apart from the Ford GT40 which I would sell my kidneys for)
Celica - not much room in the back (if its the one I'm thinking of...)
3-litre Supra?
Or that freaky BMW 7(???) series... DIdn't sell well simply becuase it didn't look like a Beemer... It's the one with pop-up lights, RWD etc etc... otherwise excellent but the toffee snouted crowd ran away because they couldn't understand something with a BMW bade but not looking like one...
What's wrong with an S14/a for that £6k-£8k?

The Supras got eff all room in the back unfortunately. Too expensive also.
What about an Audi thingummy - with a turbo. Errr, you know the one I mean . . . :)

Cougars are a bit cramped in the back...
What about:
LHD 8 series BMW
R33 Skyline GTS
Lexus Soarer

LOL. Look at the title ;)
The S14/a would only have room for four if you where to sell it to Snow White.
:D :D

Perhaps we have finally found who the Renault Avantime was designed for :D
Ok, haven't seen these suggested? (not sure how roomy any of these are either though):
3 series Coupe
Hyundai Coupe
Rover 200 Coupe
Corrado
Would open up your options if you could go for sporty 4/5 door cars though 156, Scooby etc. :)
A 200 as a 4 seater is only a practical proposition if the rear passengers are under 2 or have no legs

No leg room! I'm only 5' 9" and it was a seriously tight fit in my mate's

honda prelude with the wonderful vtec engine is in my opinion the best looking coupe in that price range, but dream on about 2 adults in the back, its a tighter squeeze than an s13! maybe the newer shape has more room but i doubt by much, and it doesnt look as good as the older generation!!

A Prelude Vtec has even less room in the back

From a space perspective, I'd guess the best options would be:
Calibra
6 series bimmer
406 coupe
Unfortunately the Calibra is a Vauxhall, and therefore sh1te by default, the 406 has an attrocious interior (despite being acheingly gorgeous on the outside, and the bimmer...well I'd certainly go check one out.
Frankly you'll be better off finding a non coupe that looks like one. What about the Alfa 156?

406 Coupe V6 - Really nice car for a scrabbler.
Nice grunty V6, plenty of room inside, pretty refined and well built. Looks quite good too...bit like an S15. Not sure you could get one for the money you're looking at though.

Room in the back - not bloody likely. I've got an imported 2.2 on an L plate and its toddler capacity only.
For room, you want an accord I think. Or maybe an old lude...
Calibra - as much room as it's Cavalier unpinnings. V6 OK, Turbo much better all round. Don't bother with 16v.
However, all gettting a bit long in the legs now, and good ones (especially the Turbos) are hard to find.
Pick of the Bunch:
95 4x4 Turbo with less than 80,000miles
or
96/97 V6 SE9
Cougar - poorly finished and a little bit sh1te. Cheap as chips as a result. Avoid. V6 if you must get one.
406 Coupe - drove one and found it pretty dire. Wouldn't bother unless you're desperate.
S2 Coupe - built like Audi's used to be. 20v 5 Cylinder Turbo and torsen 4wd means plenty of stonk. Not that roomy though, and expensive to run - it's basically a re-bodied UR-q
635 CSi - mmmmm peachy, and classic insurance. Small boot.
R33 GTS-T - loadsa room in the back of these. Not that pretty tho, and everyone'll think you're too tightwad to lash out on a GTR :D
I'll second a Fiat Coop, 20VT will just about kill a standard *****, 16VT will be a bit slower, plenty of room inside and they look damn nice, just a shame they are SCRABBLE

I've only heard people shout 'ooo look... Skyline'. Anyway, don't want a GTR, I prefer my rear wheels to do all the driving all the time, thank you very much.
My R33 GTS-T works well as an airport taxi if thats any help...

Just like the saloon version, it's hopelessly outclassed. Think Rover 800 (for they were once the same car) but heavier. Compared to the opoosition they are lardy, stodgy barges.
Great cars on the motorway though and if gadgets are your thing, then you'll love em.
