View Full Version : Mate's MR2
My mate has an MR2 has recently had a new engine put in - but has a few problems. Was wondering if you could help....
Firstly, the oil pressure light blinks sometimes at revs below 1,000rpm...what could this be?
Also, the temp and fuel gauges don't work
Any ideas? I said I'd ask on here for him.
Oil pump in sump - not sealed properly, low revs, low rotational worm gear speed equals low pressure cos half the oil is escaping back into the sump....
Gauges not working - try plugging the things in, often one of the overlooked bits....
Cheers, the temp gauge seems to be stuck at a quarter up and the fuel about three quarters up!! Wierd....!

That actually sounds like it may have the wrong sensors in it - is it a later engine than the car?
The engine installed may use sensors (oil pressure switch included) that work at a different frequency...
Has he got the old engine? Compare part numbers, or get Toyota to confirm that there is no part number change on these three sensors according to different chassis/engine numbers.
If it ain't that, it may be the voltage regulator at the back of the instrument panel is knackered...
Check the cheapo items first, before ripping the sump off to change a phantom oil pressure loss.

Cheers, for that. Will pass on your advice.
I think you are probably right, the original car is an import but the donor engine is from a UK-spec so the wrong type of sensors seems most likely to the problem.
