View Full Version : D1GP/Time Attack Round 4 Silverstone!
Just got back from a good day at Silverstone, weather stayed dry which was good! The combination of D1 and the Time Attack works really well and theres always something happening to keep you entertained!
Saw quite a few 200's well thousand to be exact! Quite a few were in the practice area giving it some sideways action for the crowd :notworthy !
Things that impressed:
Norris Designs Evo - Unbelievable speed and the noise  !
Fensport Celica - Really tidy, well set-up motor!
Phil Morrison - !
Jez - Looking really fast + flames  !
Rant Time: MORE BURGER VANS REQUIRED NEXT TIME  !!!
The only burger van we could find ran out of food :smash: so we had to queue at the restaurant, missing the Time Attrack Club Finals  only to find out they had ran out of hot dog roles! I mean come on Silverstone.... ava quiet word!
Other than that a cracking day!
Not to sure on results mate sorry!
RC Developments Evo was just ahead of Norris before the 15min open pit, don't know if it stayed like that  !
Jez looked really fast when I saw him so he can't have been to far off the pace in the club challenge!
Ne probs, its annoying being stuck at work when theres good stuff going on in the world ;)
I had a great day! :)
In the morning it was raining and quite wet on track. People were doing laps around the 1m25s mark. It was extremely slippery - having a vintage Bentley meet the day before didn't help - they pretty much coated the track in oil...
Later on the sun came out and dried the track. 2nd practise I managed a time of 1m06.2s - a full 3 seconds quicker than I'd ever done it before  That got me fastest rwd time and 2nd overall in the Club Challenge. Very pleased!
Next up was the final timed run. Waiting in the queue to get on track, my oil temp started to rise up to about 110 deg C. Thought that my main rad fan may have broken so put the heaters on and that brought the temps down. Problem solved....
Out on track I went for it from the offset. For those that don't know, we get 1 warm up lap, one timed flying lap and one cooler down lap. I was straight out of the pits and pushing hard - mainly to get the tyres up to temp but also to judge where the grip limits were. I came over the start finish straight at around 120mph, then into 5th for a bit and then hard on the brakes, back into fourth for Copse. Ended up going in a bit too fast and missed the apex then couldn't get back on the power when I'd have liked as I was going too quick. Anyway, came out of Copse and went flat out in 4th to the limiter and a slight dab of the brakes and into Maggots. Carried pretty much straight on and braked very hard into 2nd gear for Becketts. Bit of sideways action on the way out and up through the gears. Late braking and late turn in is the key to Brooklands, managed to pull it off pretty well. A little more braking and down into 2nd gear for the hair pin, Luffield. On the exit to Luffield its back on the power full throttle all the way up on to the start finish straight and 5th gear.
And that was my lap. Annoyingly, after the timed lap I managed to do Copse far faster... Room for improvement there I think.
Went back to the pits after a cool down drive (which was definately required, oil temps where around 125 deg C!! ) and got my lap time.
Managed a 1m05.6s!! Really please - thats a full 4 seconds faster than last time :)
In the end I got 1st in class, 3rd overall in Club Challenge :)
There was only 0.5s between me and 1st place in Club Challenge - It'd be nice to win it at Donnington - just have to do a little more fettling, drive better  and go for it. Can't wait.

just curious whcih brake set up do you have now as it says on your spec that youve got 4pot calipers and 310mm discs but recall you saying that you were changing them (at least i think i did) also do you still have the your abs or has that been removed?
Fantastic effort Jez, top job!
Yeah... first in class, well done mate :)
Roll on Donny :)
Congrats again Jez
Cheers all :)

I've got k-sport 330mm disks and 8 pots now. I still have ABS.

Fantastic effort Jez  Who managed to get faster than you?
Fantastic effort Jez  Who managed to get faster than you?
Jason Hulbert - I think he got 1m05.0s in an Evo
Darren Bly - 1m05.2s in a R32 GTR (although he got 2 attempts at the timed run as he said he caught up with someone)
Blimey, pretty close at the top then. Show them what proper RWD is capable of :)
Yup - all pretty close.
I think Norris got a 1m02.1s
Fantastic effort from Jez, really great! :notworthy
My story... :ghey:
Well, the adrenaline was brown and runny after my spin at Copse in the first session. That car does not like it when it's as slick as a butt. Mid-engined and short wheelbase isn't exactly the best combo. It was an eleventy-million degree spin and it marooned me in the middle of the circuit. Car took several seconds to restart...
Rest of that session was spent showing the D1 boys how to do things properly. I've never learnt so much about car control! Terminal understeer followed by snap oversteer. Muchos correction and swearing. At one point I was going around Luffied 50% on the rumble strip and 50% on the grass...
Second session was much better, and seeing the results I was only four seconds behind Shaun Fennings in an Impreza Spec C at that point. I was determined to "catch him". :p
However, once dry and in the Time Attack proper the speed differentials made themselves apparent and I finished dead last with 1:22.9. :D
Not bad for an optimistic 120bhp, titchy-brakes, and a ginga driver...!
:Plug:
Pretty sure RC got a 1'01.1!
The sound from that BMW was insane.
Drifting was just amazing - top class, brilliant day out.

nice one Jez, nice to see you work over the last few weeks has paid off
Just need to have a look at sorting your oil temps now
Just need to have a look at sorting your oil temps now
That won't take long - I know what happened - I was lucky not to lose the engine to be honest...
Had a good day again, the on track action was spot-on.
I do think the whole days timetable need to be organised better though. From a spectator point of view there seamed to be too much waiting around with very little happening (worse than usual).
From reading Phil Morrisons post on dw, him and Mulvey should have gone "one more time" however because they were running late they just put Mulvey straight through:annoyed: Not saying one competitor was better than the other but they should have let them battle in out to the death!
Who was the guy in the orangy-yellow S13 Silvia? He was very good for his first event:thumbs:

No lasting damage, I hope?

i thought that. I was told from a guy who had been to D1's befoer tey would battle for third... and considering i though Phil was robbed I was looking forward to him caliming 3rd. That said I fell in love the the PL drivers s14 as well so I just wanted to see both the cars again tbh :D
the s13 was indeed really good. and I was really impressed with the really old school toyota thing.. that looked hard to control and from what comentator was saying he was reletivly new to the car too?
Nice one jez
whens donnington ?

I think it was Mark Johnsson, but not completely sure :o
I finished 3rd after a controversial decision as mentioned about, I'm still leading the championship by 6 points though, so it's going to be a close one at Trax for the final.. Don't miss it
Pretty sure RC got a 1'01.1!
Yep a stonkingly quick 1:01.14 in the final, then 1:01.497 in the super battle!

Well done to Jez, Squizz, Phil and everyone else who competed  excellent result for all  (Squizz, I think we both knew last place was a distinct possibility ;) Maybe I should enter next time, then we can both battle it out for 2nd-to-last :whip: :D )
How many practice runs did you get? And how many "timed" runs?
Cheers, guys.
Yeah, I was fairly confident of the last slot. I was hoping some might drop out due to technical problems but...No, hang on... Did anyone see Paul Whiffin's Supra? It was given a time in practice session 1, but not later?Maybe I wasn't technically last? LOL!
The next round is probably 30th September(?) at Japfest II at Donnington. Unfortunately, our car will be being driven by it's usual driver at Snetterton in the MR2 Challenge. :indiff:
We had two practice sessions and then the 3 laps of the Time Attack. (Warm-up, Attack, Cool-down). Session 1 was stinking wet. Session 2 was decently dry. I only really got to try my lines and braking on my warm-up lap of the Time Attack, due to moving off line for faster cars earlier on. :(
It was great fun though - You have to have a go Raz!
The scrutineer was apparently very impressed with the car, and we had quite a few people stop by and look it over and ask questions. :)

Phil in my mind u were robbed mate as i said on DW, but apart from that why did u not twin with Polody for 3rd and 4th??
Jez didnt see any of the time attack, but did cheer for u in the stand getting the prizes mate
so what we really wanna know is.... what was wrong with the oil temps??

Engine was down by about 1.5 litres of coolant...
ahh, oopsy.
U said oil temp was high, was water temp not silly high?

"Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink...!"

Probably - std gauge is shite.
Erm... I'm a Silverstone Lap Record Holder!
And so is Jez! :D
Check out: http://www.timeattack.co.uk/lap%20records.asp
Ok, so I was the first ever MR2 driver in the Time Attack... Neil Armstrong was first man on the moon. Have to start somewhere! ;)
Probably - std gauge is shite.
true, but not 125 deg shite.
it hits the marke below the red line at 110degrees:)
It wouldn't have got much above 100 deg cos it'll have been boiling I expect.
Erm not unless ur running no coolant in it and its not under pressure which, well it is unless ur running without a rad cap.
i seen 110 at JAE drifty fun a few weeks ago.
edit. ahh u may mean no pressure cos ur down a liter and half of water..... the water still wont be boiling, but it will be alot closer than it would be if u had a full rad and normal pressure
It wasn't under pressure, so it probably was boiling.

But the ice cream was goooooood
Was it not a bit too fackin cold for an ice cream? I was shivering by 6pm without having an ice cream.
Maybe this english weather has made me soft.
It wasn't under pressure, so it probably was boiling.
You're being very cagey... you didnt leave the rad cap of did you :wack:
You're being very cagey... you didnt leave the rad cap of did you :wack:
I was thinking exactly that:D :D
Go on Jez, admit it
thamuff, yeah ur turning into a southern softie:D
Good result Jez, you drove brilliantly and deserved the 3rd overall in Club Challenge and fastest Rwd. You certainly had some competition in Rwd and proved that as I said sometime ago a well sorted car and driver is a great package.
You have qualified for the Final Jez so look forward to seeing you up against the other 19 Club Challenge guys (inc the one girl :D ) at Donington.
Glen
 flattery will get you everywhere ;)
Just got to shave a mere 0.6 sec off my times to win... should be able to do that ;)
