View Full Version : Who knows old Supras?
Thinking of buying a old style one (about G-reg age), either that or a seirra cossie (RWD), or something else?
I fancy a 4wd effort for the winter but there's very few cheap ones, cossie 4wd are expensive, xr4x4 are pretty slow aren't they?
Just thinking just now, got to sell one of my cars next month to make room.
Is it just me that is contantly looking at buying new cars, or planning what I want?

No. I am on Autotrader and Findit every 5 mins...!
XR4x4 not necessarily slow, there are a couple of Twin Turbo ones around for about £1000, must be at least 250BHP.

My m8 (The one who has the F Plate in Gold breaking in the Breakers section) is currently completing work on an E Reg 3.0i (Non turbo). It is now MOT'd although I don't know when the work will be completed.
It may be older than you want but may be worth considering.
His contact numbers are on the thread (The one under my ID)

Hi Dunc
A good one is a XR4X4 Turbo Technics, The odd one is up for sale as they cost alot to run, Last one I saw was about £800. They are a 2.9i Twin Turbo and 4 wheel drive I think.

That's wot I've got :)
Great cars, 230bhp 6.5ish to 60 as standard. Buy an exhaust and a few washers and you've got 280bhp. Starts getting more expensive to tune at that point though, I spent about three grand on mine but I could make over 400bhp if I turned the boost right up (I'm being pretty conservative with it at the moment) and it's still really torquey with loads of bottom end, not highly sturng at all.
There's a good thread here (http://mkiiisupra.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=1;t=27) that outlines things to look for when buying. There's a buying guide in the latest Evo mag as well, the one with the silver bentley on the front cover.
They can be expensive to fix if you let Toyota near them, but if you don't mind getting your hands dirty it's all within reach of the incompetent home mechanic. I've done almost all the work on mine myself.
Comfy ride with good grip, very quiet and refined with the stock exhaust on, a proper 150+mph GT car. 25mpg or so.
Ahh, well spotted guys, the old twin turbo XR4x4. They are not twin turbo standard are they? Anyway it must be a popular conversion though cause there is a few, thats deffo one that I'm looking out for. There are also a few sierra's with V8's chucked in them kicking about. Good for performance per pound at £1k or so max.
Shame about the rustyness of the sierras though, saying that, crude repairs are deffo the way to go ( it would hardly be my pride and joy). I am lead to believe that cossie saph's are made in germany and are alot better for rust.
I would buy a cossie hoping not to lose any money on its resale value, and any of the other sierras because there was no money to lose
As for the supra, Supraman(cheers for the link) - is it a single turbo version you've got? Also are they all straight sixes or v6's?
Cheers,
Dunc.
Adam (Supraman) has a Straight 6, single (hybrid) turbo, there were twin turbos with a 2.0 straight or 2.5 straight six but the 2.0 ain't worth bothering with... 2.0 and 2.5 were also import only so adjust insurance to suit... Domestics are just 3.0 NA and Turbo...

No V6 supras . . . yet. The Mk5 might have one though (boo!)
Avoid the non-turbo ones if you like speed and tuning potential. Avoid the 2.0 twin turbo cos it's even slower. The 2.5TT is a gem but tuning parts are more expensive, and there aren't many people in the country who know how to maintain them let alone tune them. If you want cheap speed get the 3.0T.
Cheers mate, is the non-import 3L a straight six, and also the non-import turbo?
I thought they changed to v6's but that was maybe just for the mk4's?
The Mk4 is also a straight 6 basically a stroked version of the 2.5 twin... But both the MKIII turbo and NA domestic are straight six...
Its good to hear that there is no v6's, cheers folks.
I've just heard of a white F or Greg for sale around £1000. Not much information yet apart from 230hp (turbo ?) and very good nick About 90k miles.
Will put it in for sale section when I know more. It lives down south though.
To be honest Jon, I won't start looking properly untill I've sold one of my cars next month. If you chuck it up then it might be helpful to someone else though :)
Mk3 Supras are imo more desirable than an XR4x4. What's reliability like on the TT XR4? You can get 280bhp out of a Mk3 for not much money, and you can pick up a real nice car for under £2k if you shop about for a good 'un. Take a look at the thread Adam described, the main thing to look for is that the car has been well maintained, and that the Head Gasket is ok.
