I want a new games console but which one is the best??

I've had a PS2 and wasn't impressed by the lack of quality games so don't want another one. That leaves th Xbox and Gamecube; does anyone have any views on which is the better machine.

I'm favouring the Xbox at the mo cos you can buy them pre-chipped off the web for £210.

Whats do you lot reckon??

Lack of Quality Games?

What about Burnout2 GTA3 Stuntman Hitman2?

i suppose it depends what you want out of a games console. I would never touch the other consoles cos the games just dont impress me. I bought my PS2 purely for GT3. Yes that does make it one hellishly expensive game, but I reckon it is worth it, given the amount of time I've spent playing it. (Yes, the reason I got a PS1 was cos of GT!)

Also doubles as the dvd player.

(Snag is once you have a console you get tempted to buy more games ;) )

I've just bought an X-Box for my youngest son via the Comet Web-Site.

It only cost £249 and came with 5 games, 3 DVD's, the DVD Controller and a carrying case.

Can't be bad.

xbox, xbox, all the way.
Dixons, currys etc are doing a deal where they will part ex any old console for £30 off an xbox. doesn't even have to work. Piece of piss to pick up a Snes with no wires for £5 from cash convertors etc.
But as someone with a chipped one, I'd say definately go for that if you're into that kinda thing (free games etc)

Personally, I've never bothered with consoles as I've never seen one that could match the quality and versatility of my PC.

True, but you don't have to keep upgrading you console to play the latest games.

Exactly. Which means the technology is obsolete virtually as soon as it's released. With PCs, you just stick a new graphics card in and bam, you have superior power for the latest games, which invariably take advantage of that power to deliver better and faster graphics.

Wak

Ok, you see that as an advantage, games are expensive enough to buy without having to fork out for a new graphics card:) (tight git)

It's all a bit of a pain though, having to p1ss about changing the machine to play a game, a lot of people wouldn't even know what graphics card to buy, let alone how to fit it, and it's no good asking PC world, they'll just look at your porn collection;)

Do you not think it's a bit lazy of developers though? I remember the difference between the quality of the early PS1 games and the later ones was massive. Developers had to be more clever in programming to get the most out of the machine and got better as time went on. They don't bother with the pc games as far as I can see, just stick a higher minimum spec on the box and force people to upgrade the hardware to play.

Get an Xbox,

Halo is the best game on earth. Especially in a two player multilink stylee.

After playing on one, I went back to my PS2 and it was CACK.

I had my PS2 about 12 months ago, true GT3 and GTA3 are excellent but at the time there was some proper cr@p stuff about.

Suppose a top bollox PC will be better than a console but you have to fork out at least twice the amount of cash; the latest graphics card costs more than any console on the market.

the latest graphics card will also run the latest games at a higher resolution than any console will ever see :)

halo has to be the most involving game ever made - cant beat it... and gta3 is on xbox too, so therefore :D

humm here's my 2p + I used to work for a games company...

X-box = It a PC in a box that look like a fan heater + it a M$ product with a M$ OS... I wouldnt touch it with a bardgepool!

PS2 = The Odd way ots built makes it a pain to program for in the begining, hnce some game were ropy but promises to get better as programmers workout how to get the most out of it. + sonys hands off approtch to publishing meen there is soom p00 games out there but at lest ya have some choice.

GC = It aint as powerfull as either the above but what it does it does well. If ya like the game that are availble for it then fine but Nintendo tent to orgistrate what comes out on it. Intrestingly EA back the GC more than the Xbox inturms of puttintg money down to produce games...

Ahh its like the old Amiga Vs ST days :D

Buy a top of the range PC and a Sega Genesis (I have both and enjoy playing the Genesis as the games are more original)

I would personally be tempted by the Game cube, but as you said, its under powered, the gfx are blury and if the N64 is anything to go by, the frame rate its awful!

I would say PC, and you can even get it to play through your TV, then you'll really see how much the gfx on a PC really are. One problem is compatiblity and drivers, which when new releases come out, can cause probs.

Don't bother with an Xbox :(

If the only game worth having is Halo, (yes I too think its good, best thing the XBox has) :D
then thats a lot of money for one game.

a) Believe me Microshaft have only just got in to the console war (too bloody late as well)
b) They don't have a proven track record, this WILL prove to be their downfall.
c) Bill Gates in a leather jacket yuck :(
d) Its just a PC, how long before you get a keyboard and MS Windows for Xbox????

I will be surprised if the Xbox survives a couple of years before MS gives up.

Gamecube is defo the better of the two options as Nintendo at least have a proven past in video games.

I will stick with my trusty PS2 great bit of kit and sorry you Halo lovers but Timesplitters 2 kicks Halo's ever so limited butt:D

Where else can you link 4 consoles and have 16 players all at the same time????

And before everyone goes nuts about internet gaming, don't bother as it won't happen in this country as long as phone charges are so astronomical. It will forever remain the preserve of the PC junkies, where Doom and the rest have a very popular and strong support already so why bother with the consoles?

When Sony started they tried something new, so far Microsoft have done nothing but copy the opposition hoping to get a hold of some of the lucrative console market. I'd love to be proved wrong on this front but as with Sega before them, I think in the future there will be only a couple of players, and I dread to say it but possibly only one eventually and that is not a prospect I'm looking forward to...

I agree PCs are versatile... you can code, design websites, create pretty graphics and animations, produce music, write CVs, do the accounts, etc. But I really can't be ar5ed with spending ages re-configuring my PC every time I want to play the latest game, and risk messing up the machine when it comes to wanting to do the other more important things.

With a PS2 I get home, rip off the wrapping, put the disk in and play. If it doesnt work I dont stay up all night trying to tweak the system while tearing my hair out... I take it back to the shop and get another copy. Easy. (And yes I used to do this, until I discovered the joys of playstation.)

And every time a game comes out I don't wanna have to keep wasting cash upgrading the PC just cos the programmers are too bloody lazy to write efficient code!

Besides, there isn't a better driving sim out there. I've tried a lot of them on my mates' always updated PC (he's an overpaid IT contractor ;) ) and I still prefer GT3 for realism. :P

Agree with you there.

If they keep dropping the retail price it will become quite competitive. They had quite a rise in sales since the price drops.

b) They don't have a proven track record, this WILL prove to be their downfall.
But they do have a proven track record with software, which *may* save them if they can get the retail price low enough to shift lots of boxes.

c) Bill Gates in a leather jacket yuck :(
I agree. Considering he's one of the richest men in the world, he certainly knows how to wear some crap clothes :D

d) Its just a PC, how long before you get a keyboard and MS Windows for Xbox????
You can get a keyboard and mouse for it now. And some clever buggers have made a Linux distro for it. I knew it was good for something :D

I will be surprised if the Xbox survives a couple of years before MS gives up.
When have you ever seen M$ give up? XBox 2 has been in development for a bit...

Microsoft have never done anything other than copy the opposition. However, they have always gone on to dominate the market. Whether it will happen in that market remains to be seen however.

Spot the person on a dial-up :(

It is already a reality, providers like Jolt host the biggest game network in europe. True, it is a huge advantage if you have broadband, and its a fair bit less social than having your mates round, playing on a console, but theres something about being able to thrash germans and french then rub there noses in it, that appeals to me

Oh, i asked this question some while ago....

Swings in roundabouts and depends on what you want out of your console, i think. I did ask this question in a shop one time, and the comments went like this:-

"The X-box has a faster processor 3 times faster in fact!" Yep true but the PS2 is based on a a different chipset, so it is like comparing an Mac to a PC. A 1gig mac runs a lot faster than a 1 gig PC.

"Xbox has a hard drive" PS2 doesn't, although you can get a external one to plug in.

"Xbox is the only system to link 4 consloes and 4 tv and have 16 players" Not selling point for me, fun though it sounds i would struggle to get 16 people in my lounge. Doesn't Timespitters have this functon now though.

The graphics are probably better on the Xbox, it is the newer unit so it damm well should do. It is no secret that Xbox 2 is being developed, so i would imagine that a PS3 isn't far away.

I was bought the PS2 for my birthday (thanks to my wife), and i treid out halo on the Xbox, very good game but it did suffer from huge frame drop when things got a bit hectic. Something i was very surprised to see considering that it wasn't supposed to do that. More impressed with the PS2, and the fact it can play all the old games aswell, so i would have bought teh PS2 given teh choice anyway.

And then, of course, there is GT3. Doesn't appear on Xbox and GT4 is in development....

Fact: gamecube is for 5 year olds.
Fact: xbox (beta test ;) ) is created by microsoft
Fact: PS2 is cool.

This is what Microsoft have built their business on.... Backward compatibility. Sony have the jump on them in this market.

I can't believe people are recommending a PC to someone who wants to play games. Who would pay £1000-2000 just to play games when I console only costs £200.

The PS2 is a bargin, a DVD player alone costs about £100. The PS2 plays CDs, DVDs, PS2, PS1, and all for £200 or less. A good PC monitor would cost that let alone the PC to plug into that!

Most people already have a TV, so its just the £200 on top of that for the console. You can also get a BIG TV, how much does it cost for a large widescreen monitor?

Just my opinion ;)

just do what i did and buy all 3, ha ha, http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid37/pa54a13e4374d8931ec50c471c24a5ca2/fd1ccc96.jpg

in my view the x-box is the most superior to them all, but its in the same position as the PS2 when that first came out, a couple of good/brilliant games, the rest are'nt even worth looking at, halo is an excellent game huge and very playable and very hard - will last you a while, then the only other game is project gotham racing which is ok, graphics are brill though. Then theres the kiddish game cube, imho this is fantastic ( but im biast as ive had nintendos from day1 and still have them all aswell nintendo 8 bit, SNES, 64 and now the cube, oh and a game boy advance ) they are very easy to understand and play and they are very entertaining and will last a while. Mario is an excellent game and the new zelda will probably be one of the best games ever if the 64 version is anything to go by plus you get the bond games and of course the very entertaining mario kart ( c'mon who's not had a big pi55-up playing that with a group of mates? ) then theres the PS2, which is also brilliant in its own right, with games like gran turismo 3, GTA3, GTA- vice city ( when its out ) metal gear solid 1 + 2. GTA3 must be one of the best games ever, you'll never play the same game twice and you have it all, cars 'n' guns ( brilliant when youve finished thrashing cars around you can sit on a roof top with a hefty arsenal and wipe people out as they go by - although not forgetting the recent events in washington ) but the only drawback is that the programmers seem to concentrate more on sequences between levels, good as they are they lose the effect on the rest of the game which end up being very short games and dont take long to finish at all, metal gear has to be one of the worst for this !!!, but atleast now you have a good choice with it now.
My advice would be, to get a PS2 and get GT3 and GTA3 and vice city - these will last you ages, then get it chipped then download any games you want, you wont get annoyed then if you complete it quick or if its crap as you'd have only paid a couple of quid at the most on it instead of £40+. just my contibution
leon.

A bit off topic I know but I've got one kicking around the loft somewhere and all this talk of consoles stirred up the fond memories...... there was a car racing game called Turbo that came with it's own steering wheel..... ahem, sorry:o  .

Oh, yeah Playstation 2 kicks X-box' ass for sheer playability of games like GTA3, GT3, Pro Evo 2, Colin McCrae 3 etc. etc........

PC is undoubtley the best for gamning,
not only is the technology constantly evolving,
but the graphix are also the best exsp when u
pref to run games above 800x600 the standard
tv res...the keyboard and moose combo
cant be beat exs for fps games..like ut or q3,
xbox uses direct x 8.1 as its api,
any game that runs on the x box can very
easily be converted to run on the pc...halo
for example...its for pure commercial reasons
that they havnt converted that to run on a pc yet,
the current ati radeon 9700 graphic card
which is direct9 compliant is more powerful
then any current gamning console.

have any of you guys seen the illegal
divx for doom3 which was shown at this
years e3?...chit the graphix on that game
are on a totally different level then
anything weve seen before....im talking finally
movie like eye popping in game graphix:D
and that game was run using a ati rad9700.

bottom line u cant beat the pc..:O)
