View Full Version : Brands Indy Evening : 4th September
As the last one got booked up pretty quick, I think a few of us are planning to do another one:
http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/brands-hatch/trackdays/event-details.asp?ProductID=2268
4th September, Novice Evening, £99, although I believe we get a discount if we have more than a certain number of SXOC members (SM - can you confirm?)
Any more people interested? :)
Jon
Me
It's 10 members or more to get a 10% discount ;)
I'll be booking later, so that's 2, and my mate Rob with the Brabus Roadster said he will prob come along, and he's got membership since he went to Haynes...
Just need 7 more now :D
I'm booked, as is Rob - think Juz is going for the full day a few later though :(
any more? :)
I so wanna do this in the pug  If I can get the gearbox and clutch sorted before then I'm up for it - what sort of notice period do you need?
I think it's just down to how many spare places there are left - dunno how quick they are going!
ok, I'll try and sort it and come back to you
going to do a quick check in the morning to make sure it doesn't clash with any other holidays at work, and then I'm signing up for this one
I loved it last time :sxoc:
booked
Going to get some driver instruction this time. I was sooooooooo slow at Brands and Oulton when I know both myself and the car can go faster

oh my god why did i blow my gearbox this morning!!!!!
im so up for this
doubt I'm going to make it I'm afraid, too much to do on the pug, not enough time  I'd need new rear tyres as well and I doubt I'll have that much money to weild round
No worries Arry, didn't realise your work situation was bad when you originally posted :(
If you are around, nip down - don't think it's that far for you is it?
Cluck :
I'll pop down, of that you can be (reasonably) sure :)
Would you guys like a photographer?

Cool :)
Would you guys like a photographer?
Why, do you know a good one? ;)
:D
One of my mates is coming along to take some pics - you are more than welcome if you want to, but this time you have to promise to spend at least some time *in* the cars as well as shooting them ;)
I'll offer a passenger ride if you are there :)
Would you guys like a photographer?
need a lift ;)

done deal fella
Would love to attend to this as well. I remember when I took my little
Kia Pride there last March and thrashed the hell out of it:wack: . Boy that was fun around the corners:smash: :D .
I've just recieved an email back from Alex with regard to photographing trackside. As I've got the £5m public liability insurance, it's all ok:thumbs:

What make you think I'm going to take any pictures of your car:p
What make you think I'm going to take any pictures of your car:p
because I drive so slow, you can't help but take a nice sharp shot of my car  ;)
Roll Call?
Me, Rob (with the brabus roadster), Cluck...
Anyone else? :)
The website has closed booking for this event :( "ONLINE BOOKING FOR THIS EVENT HAS NOW CLOSED"
I will give them a ring to see if there is any spaces left and if there is you may see me there.
I have had no luck in getting on this as it's fully booked with a reserve list and no last minute cancellations.
I hope you guys have a good time.
Had a bloody fantastic time fella, cheers  . Shame you couldn't make it, but there were something like 40+ cars there this evening. I was a bit worried, having seen the way three of them drove up to and into the circuit
I took some tuition and it was the best £25 I've spent on the car since owning it. The lines I was taking were totally different to the lines I took when I went there for the SXOC evening earlier in the year. As a result, I was catching everything on the track (well, except a 911 GT3 :o ), including a 911 Turbo.
The guy doing the tuition said at the end "You really went for that, good for you. That was a fantastic drive" . And no, he wasn't saying that to everybody - I listened in on a couple of his other 'after-drive' conversations with drivers.
I've got about 50+ minutes of track time taped, so I'll get some of that up on to my site over the next day or two. I'll have to bleep some of it, because I did use some naughty language :D . You won't be able to see why, but it's simply because a couple of idiots didn't follow the simple rule of slowing down when indicating to let me pass. Hence, I was entering the bends completely off-line and it wasn't funny :annoyed: .
Thanks to Jon for the heads up to this event
Finally, hello again to the two guys who endured my endless rabbitting when I came into the pits. The adrenaline was pumping too hard and it set my gob into overdrive :wack: . Sorry fellas  . Oh, and I can't remember either of your names :o :wack:
Sorry I couldn't make it guys, too much on
cluck, it wasn't a small fella with a big nose you were chatting to by chance was it? :wack:
er, as a 6-footer, most people look small to me :wack: . They both knew you though and said you weren't coming along :ghey:
I've just been watching some of my footage. It appears I was lapping around the 1m03s, which I'm more than happy with :)
Oh, and just watched my first swear moment as well :D - well, the knobber was rolling back down paddock hill into me after Rob's Roadster went off
I'm going to have to edit out the sound. I've got a problem with the exhaust rattling on the underside of the car somewhere and coupled with the Defi alarm going off, it's enough to drive you insane :annoyed: . So, I need to find some decent music to go with the video. Suggestions

Cosyone and Snoopy I reckon then.
Did the mouthy twattish one look like this at all??

er, yep, that's definitely one of them
neither of them got a chance to get a word in. As I said, my gob was on overtime :wack:
Oh, and I did my entire first session (after the training session) with the air-con running :wack: :D
er, yep, that's definitely one of them

Haha, that's cosy the closet queer
Don't worry matey, even if you'd let them speak, you wouldn't have learned much :wack:
Had another great evening at Brands today :)
A few iffy drivers though, and some people that probably should be barred from a novice session though - especially the guy with the fully roll caged 911 GT3 who competes in Porsche OC club time trials - no way was he a novice...
Got the car nicely set up later on, just need more oomph now - frustrating catching everyone on the corners and then watching them vanish down the straights :(
Good to meet you (again) cluck - you seemed chuffed :)
The damage to Rob's car didn't seem too bad - the back panel was scuffed but wasn't broken, and the nearside light cluster had stopped working.

chuffed? CHUFFED? I was like a pig in shit fella :D
I've met you before then  . I feel terrible now, because I'm normally very good with faces (hopeless at putting names to them :wack: , but normally good at remembering people that I've met  ). Sorry about that :smash:
I chatted to the guy who was driving Rob's car when it went off, just to make sure it was all OK. He seemed to think it would be fine and put it all down to driver error :( . Guess that's just part of the "track experience".
You're right about that GT3 though  . I forgot it was a novice evening about 30 seconds after getting on track.
Oh, and finally, that McLaren F1 sounded :smitten:
And lastly, my favourite quote from watching the video footage
Yeah, try slowing down next time, so that I don't have to take a f**ked up line. Asshole. Remember the f**king briefing :D

I met you at the SXOC brands day, briefly - well, I recognised you, don't think we spoke :) No worries anyway :)
I think the damage to Rob's car was purely cosmetic, it'll t-cut out :wack: ;)
Hi cluck, good to meet you tonight. It was myself and Cosy (pictured) hope you did not get too traumatised meeting him:wack:
Your car looks fantastic and you did look good on the track, it showed that you had had some tuition. Looking forward to any footage you have.

cheers fella :o Sorry I forgot your name and sorry about the overtime gob :wack:
The footage is now all ripped onto the PC. Just got to edit out the start and end pieces, split it into the 2 sessions and then find some music to go over the top of it to drown out the rattling exhaust and Defi alarm :annoyed:
Probably won't upload it until Wednesday now - got the Cambs SXOC meet tomorrow night :)
Oh, and finally, that McLaren F1 sounded :smitten:
The McF1 was great :smitten:
It didn't look very fast, just pootling round, until you watched it overtake the caterham.. then the radical... then the corvette... then the gt3... etc etc...
cheers fella :o Sorry I forgot your name and sorry about the overtime gob :wack:
Don't worry about it, I'm sure I will be the same when I finally get to do a track session. Good luck carting tommorrow.
Where was the F1, would have loved to see that. The GT3 was :smitten: , just ashame about the driving.

It was in the session before ours - it was a charity bash, and you could pay 25 quid for a passenger ride with Derek Bell (IIRC) who owned it.
The guy in the GT3 was a good driver, just a bit out of our league :wack:

The F1 was going round before our sessions started - along with a host of other VERY quick cars  . As jonboy says, it looked really sedate, but was lapping everything like they were going backwards  . Truly stunning :smitten: :notworthy
Oh, and I nearly shook hands with the legend that is Derek Bell :notworthy . As I was walking towards him, I thought "hold on, that's Derek Bell". Then my brain said "nah, can't be". Then my brain said "No, brain, you were right first time. That is Derek bloody Bell". By the time I had made my mind up that it was him, he was talking to some other people. Truly a legend
EDIT - Ah, beaten to it, Jonboy has already mentioned this  :D

He was indeed. A black one
(slow as well ;) :p )
Oh, and I should say thanks to the instructor who seemed to have taken laughing gas before he came out on track with me. He spent most of the 20 minutes laughing at the lines other cars were taking - even the ones trying to get instruction as well :D . It was slightly hard to concentrate when the guy next to you is laughing his head off one second, and then pushing your steering wheel harder into Paddock Hill bend the next  :D .
I honestly believe that tuition is an absolute necessity towards getting the best out of your car on track. I would NEVER have taken the lines he showed me, or turned the wheel quite so violently into most of the bends either. It was truly eye opening, and probably also explains why I was dripping with sweat at the end of the 20 minutes lesson :hurl:
OK, rather than choose the easy option of sleep, I've worked on the videos and have now uploaded them. They're 320x240 and set for 512kbps but last quite a while (19m 56s and 27m 52s  )- they are the complete sessions as I did them. I didn't video the training session, but on reflection I wish I had :(
I'm currently working on the uncensored versions, whereby I fade out the music, let you hear my swearing and then bring the music back in :D . I won't publish the link to these videos publicly, just drop me a PM for the link if you want

I'm not 100% convinced on all the music track choices, but I am convinced it's better than hearing the bloody exhaust rattle :D
EDIT - they're both online now
He was indeed. A black one
(slow as well ;) :p )
Ahh... The black one was someone else ;) I was in the green one ;) You know, the one that was parked in the garage next to you ;) the GREEN one ;)
I'll definitely be taking instruction on my next trackday - I've got a 'feel' for the way the car handles now, worked out what tyre pressures and shock settings seem to work, now all I need is a better driver ;)
I've got 10 mins of video footage which I'll sort at some point - I was going to do more but it got depressing watching all of the cars overtaking me ;)
LOL at you waving at me in the video, as you come steaming past me  ;)

er, guess I need new glasses then :wack:

Nice footage cluck, the track seems so much shorter from a drivers point of view and a lot steeper in places.
I like the sound tracks a lot. Would you be able to send me the play lists (or one of those special back-up cds:wack:) as they would be great for a driving CD.

The track feels VERY steep going down Paddock Hill. It's extremely daunting the first time you take it, and the 'whumph' at the bottom, just before it rises into Hailwood Hill is  mixed with :D . As for shorter, I never really felt that to be honest, although I've only visualised it from inside a car - I haven't walked round it.
As for the music, well the playlist is in the credits at the end of the 2nd session video  ;) . It's not going to be to everybody's tastes, but it is far better than the original soundtrack. The following link is a minute of my car on track with the 'natural' soundtrack. You'll quickly see why I removed it and added music :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:
Annoying bloody car (http://www.clucksworld.co.uk/sxoc/Brands Hatch September 2006/annoyingexhaust.wmv)
But, to save you watching nearly 30 minutes of track-time, it's as follows :-
The Kooks - Eddie's Gun
Muse - Supermassive Black Hole
The Automatic - Monster
Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Gnarls Barkley - Smiley faces
Placebo - Drag
Morning Runner - It's not like everyone's my friend
Dogs - Heading for an early grave
Black Crowes - Twice as Hard
AC/DC - Problem Child
Iggy Pop - The Passenger
Phantom Planet - California
Most of the tracks I picked because I simply like them, but others also have added significance with their titles :D. But specifically :-
Monster - What my car felt like actually passing people
Chasing Cars - Need I explain ;)
Crazy - I must have been to go out on track a day after Silverstone
Smiley Faces - Well, one big smiley face. Mine. Like this :D
Heading for an early grave - Me (and my car), if I keep doing these track days ;)
Problem Child - Well, I'm sure my mum will disagree, but I always felt like one :o
The Passenger - 'nuff said
Raj has put his pics up

Cheers for that. Quite a few pics of my car there  . Thank Raj for me please fella :)
Thanks, I did not have time earlier to watch to whole vid. Your exhaust certainly has a 'unique' sound. I really cannot wait to do a track session now, the video has really tempted me.

It's not unique, it's fooking annoying :indiff: . It's hitting part of the under-part of the car and I need to spend some time adjusting it. Right now, it's doing my head in - yes, it's like that 99% of the time when accelerating :annoyed:  :furious: :smash:
I really cannot wait to do a track session now, the video has really tempted me.
The only problem with doing a track session (especially your first track session), is that you cannot wait to do the next one :D. This weekend has eaten through nearly half the rear pads (about half was worn just doing Oulton Park for a day  ), god knows how much tyre tread, 3 tanks of petrol and I don't know how much extra wear on the general car. I also now need to replace the brake fluid (it's 18 months old and done 4 track sessions). I reckon I'll change the oil a month early as well, just in case (but will definitely use the oil analysis service to see if it was worth changing early, or if I can safely leave it longer in future :sxoc: )
It's bloody addictive though. Each time I finish track time, I'm thinking about when I'm going to do another. Brands is a great place to start, but airfields are a hell of a lot safer  (lots and lots more run off, just in case it all goes wrong :( )
I've spent, since April, £150+ on new pads, £150 on new front discs (warped my old ones at Oulton :( ), £400+ on track time, £400 on petrol plus accelerated wear on tyres and other components just to have a few hours fun on the track  . But if I was told it would cost me that much at the start, I still would have gone ahead. No question. The buzz from driving on track (which for me exhibits itself as verbal diarrhoea :D ) is worth double that money, any day of the week

Hi Everyone,
Glad you all enjoyed yourselves on our recent events - especially you clucks!
We'll be looking to do an SXOC exclusive day sometime in 2007 as the club seems to be getting more and more involved in trackdays!
I'm just about to make a new post about some Open Pit Lane and Novice Only dates we have coming up for the rest of the year - I'll add the link shortly.
Thanks again, see you at one of our circuits soon!

Hi Alex,
It's good that you guys are here, and listening to us :)
My only criticism would be the 'novices' on the novice days - the guy in the 911 GT3 was a nice guy, and drove well, but there was no way he should have been on a novice day - he competes in porsche club events regularly!!
Just my 2 penneth :)
Cheers,
Jon

Couldn't have put it better myself. The way the events are organised has been faultless so far. It's just the policing of "novice drivers" that maybe needs attention. I know it won't be easy, but it does need to be looked at
Here's to more track days in the future :)

Hi Jon,
I understand your concern.
It clearly states on our website that the day is for Novices. Unfortunately we do not have time to vet every booking so some people do slip through the net.
On the day if we feel a driver is not a novice then we will have a quiet word. If they begin intimidating other drivers by flashing lights and tailgating then they will be black flagged and brought into the pits and a more stern word will be had from the chief instrutor. If they continue to intimdate drivers then they will be sent home.
However, if a non-novice turns up on a novice day and they go out and are curteous to the fact that there are novice drivers on circuit and they do not intimidate them, then they are not really causing a problem. That's not to say that we would want experienced track drivers turning up on our novice events.
If you are ever on an trackday, whether it's novice or open pit lane, please don't allow anyone to intimidate you. If you feel uncomfortable on circuit simply mention this to the chief instructor and he will keep an eye on the offending driver. After all, trackdays are simply about going out there and having fun.
Hope that clears things up.
Thanks
Alex
Thanks for the response.
He wasn't being intimidating, or mis-behaving in any way - he just (IMHO) shouldn't have been in the novice group :)
I'm still kicking myself that I didn't stump up the £25 for a ride with Derek Bell in the Mclaren F1 GTR... Do you do charity days like that often? :)
It's all a bit subjective really. I've been to a GP day which wasn't for novices even though I am really in the grand scheme of things... I kept out of the way of all the proper drivers and everyone was happy.
Can't wait to do another day at Brands although I guarantee it'll rain if I show up

We do charity events from time to time but we have nothing further planned for this year. However, we do have some events in the pipeline where there will be hot rides in some special cars. Watch this space!
Parker - I take it you were here on the 13th June GP day where we had a minor monsoon! We have some more GP dates planned the first being the 9th October, Open pit lane all day at £299. We may also run one more as well..
Thanks
Alex
Nah it was the recent one on the back end of August, it pppeeeeeeed it down all day :D Parker was the bloke that ended up scatting himself across the grass :D
I was at both :p
As was I

Been to the events at brands this year, very well organised and everyone had a laugh. I can't wait for the next exclusive sxoc day.
Clucky good lad waving the sxoc banner on monday. Still that old g reg rover 'almost' gave you a run for your money, think you only manage to lap him 5 times...
