Right then hackers & warez boyz, what recommendations do you have for a decent FTP server for Baggypuss?
It must be able to let different users each user have thier own path, and also be pretty damn secure. Oh free would be nice too, would hate to have to visit astalavista for a crack.
I could stick it on my linux box but can't be arsed, besides I don't fancy upgrading/patching it every 4 minutes.
My head gasket arrived today, as did my Nismo pressure plate so I'm having tomorrow off, this gives you all weekend to think about which server is best for lil old baggy.
Cheers,
Jezz.
i've always run unix based ftp servers for my release groups, win32 can be a real risk....
moan over...
I know plenty of guys running good sites using ServU 32 (version 4 is very hot) G6 also is well known for being secure.

Simon
I run Serv-U on my own network for some guys here to get stuff off - does the trick, it's secure in a sense.
Was gonna suggest GlFTPD or whatever it's called but I think that's linux only.
I've got that G6 but forgotten about it until now ... cheers yeager!
If you really must put it on a Windows machine (put it on a Linux machine, you know you want to :D ), use Bullet Proof FTP Server. It's the best and most stable you're going to get on a Windows machine. Look here: http://www.bpftp.com/
pah linux...
FreeBSD all the way baby, and if your really brave, BSDi...
Solaris shoots linux in the nads as well, but it's not easy getting all the dev tools you need to really have fun
linux... pah, thats the Saxo of the server world.
Oh no, you're one of "them" BSD types ;)
hehe ;)
yeah I grew up with real operating systems, blah blah *voice fades as no-one really gives a sh1t*
i've also done a lot of work with security, networks and operating systems and the range of BSD servers available is excellent for building a damn secure system. OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD. FreeBSD has the best support and docs i've ever seen.
Hang in #freebsd for 30 mins, ask a few questions, feel the vibe, then go hang in #linux or #redhat for 30 mins, it'll drive you nuts.

Can't you make it an FXP compatible server?

As in FXP™ (Foreign Exchange Protocol™)?
If so why would I want to do that?

Yeah, it was a toss up between a Superfast well spec'ed PC with DVD writer, and a Sun Blade. DVD writer won that one I'm afraid. :):D:D If the DVD writer wasn't an option I'd have gone for the blade, cos they are so sexy don't you just love lilac?
I find the bit about really having fun with Solaris and dev tools quite un-nerving, you odd man. :)

For an FTP server to be compatible with an FXP client both listening services need to be on an unNAT'd interface with the proper firewall configuration (or preferably non, FXP can be a bitch to get working) in place to allow the special type of FTP commands an FXP client makes...
An no, i'm not in the mood for setting one up unless you pay me lots of money, cause its arse and boring :)

wtf is BSD??
I personally use Serve-U, which is alright. Nothing to ride home about, plus i did have a few probs with peeps connecting to it, but that my have been because of NAT

BSD = Berkeley Software Design.
Another derivative of Unix.

UnderNet
The UnderNET network is about the best, EFNet has got a bit pants and the rest are simply too small.
If you wanna get me on IRC (UnderNET) just msg yeager.

Yeah man those blades are NICE, got a few in the office. But for workstations i'm pretty much a win32 kinda guy, and for the server stick to *nix.
Dev tools are my work i'm afraid, but I do love getting my hands on cool technology.
What are the BSD installers like? I could always make up a quick VM in Vmware and see what all the fuss is about :)

FreeBSD installer is ok, it's no way near as clean as the Redhat one (ok ok I admit some linux disto's have got the installers sorted)
I hear the OpenBSD installer is superb tho.. get VM fired up and have a blast
