Dave,
I noticed you got a 405 TD Estate, Im looking at buying one in the next couple of weeks, is yours the 1900 ? anything I should be aware of when looking at them ? I know the 1900's are bullet proof, they are in all sorts of cars. What niggly things are wrong with yours, its gonna be my daily commute and double as a tow car for my toys :)
Grrrrr - curse that filter, I'll have to wait till I get home!!
I have a 405 too, no major probs in the year I've had it, would be nice if the one you buy has had a cam belt cos it aint that easy to change. The only problems I do have are non-working aircon (broke when I bought it), stiff clutch (they all do that sir) and suspension that's seen better days (it's done 102000). Oh, and make sure you get the turbo version cos the standard 1.9 is reallt slow.

Mines been pretty sound so far, Air con needed regassing, works OK now. The heating packed in but it was just a motorised actuator that went, only £5.00 from scrapyard.
It was using a little water as well but a dose of Radweld seems to have sorted that.
Mine failed its MOT last month with worn rear subframe bushes that had to be replaced, wasn't too expensive though. I don't know if thats a common thing in the estate.
Deffo get a turbo model, I had a NA 405 saloon a few years back and that was total $hite 80+mph was a struggle. The turbo's by no means quick but its just enough not to be frustrating.
Apparantly you can run them on vegetable oil as well :). I've been reliably informed that mixing veg oil with 5-10% solvent will have no ill effects. Only thing you have to do is let the mixture sit for 4-6 weeks all the $hit that would clog your pump/injectors settles at the bottom and you skim the nice stuff off the top. I'll be trying that at some point.
If your getting an estate make sure the gas lifters for the boot work, theyr'e 50 odd quid to replace, its not funny when I'm lifting my knackered old dog into the boot when it falls on my head knocking me out.
Also check the driveshaft boots for wear apparantly there quite tricky to replace (whole driveshaft has to come out or something).
Thats all I can think of really, they're pretty good cars for general knocking abut in. I really wanted a Citroen XM estate though, I think they're cool.
Jeffers, THE most important thing to look for when buying a 405 is the rear suspension. Step back a bit and look from behind at the camber of the rear wheels if they are far from parrallel you'd be best to leave it because its a big job to fix.
I had the TD, and it was pretty descent actually.
