View Full Version : GPS Camera / Accident blackspot 'detectors'
I've been looking at some toys for a while :-
http://www.geodesy-direct.co.uk/
http://www.originbluei.com/
http://www.beldirect.co.uk/road-angel.htm
Has anyone got any good reviews / horror stories on any of these ? Or any advice on the 'best buy' ?
It's just with all the SPECS (see here) (http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/) camera's going up on motorways, not to mention all the GATSO's I'm starting to get a bit paranoid. :(
Cheers
These things (the Geodesy) is a blessing for my mate and it works really well, he tends to drive everywhere FLAT OUT in his modded M3 (just the suspension) it has saved him plenty of times, as have hedges and the hand of god ;)
The geodesey is probably the nicest one, but make sure to get the newest version with the uprated memory, the older model wont cope with the new updates. And if you spot a camera with the geodessey and its not recognised, submityour result using the modem uplink built in, if your the first and is varified by others you get £50 I believe ;)

I had a Geodesy on test and it took farkin ages to get a satellite lock, and kept dropping it. Really erratic. Apparently the Roadangel is the best at the moment for features and lock time. Geodesy will alert you to cameras on the opposite side of the road, Roadangel won't. Lots of clever stuff like that.
It does tell you that there is a camera on the OTHER side of the road...it even tells you ITS ON THE OTHER SIDE!
As for locking onto satellites, my mate has had no problems other than when in london city centre, and you can get an optional ariel for the geodesey to so you dont have to have it on top of your dash ;)
I've got the Geodesy plus. And it's superb.
Takes one to two minutes to log on and never loses signal (apart from tunnels etc, but finds instantly when out the other side)
I can now drive up motorways without scanning the road for white lines and cameras. So much more relaxing. Went halves with me dad, so not too expensive that way.
Also, a lot of the new cameras do not use radar.
Tru-Velo cameras are the ones that face towards you and time you over a short distance using pressure points in the road.
And Specs cameras have two cameras located any distance apart that don't use radar. My geodesy warns me when I'm in this range.
It also only beeps at me when I'm speeding as well. ALthough some of the new detectors have more gadgets. I went for the geodesy knowing that it has a pretty much guaranteed database of camera location points.
Just need a radar/laser detector now to protect me from the guns now!
I know someone with a jammer in the front of his car that jams the police guns for five seconds! Very handy, but very illegal!

Not neccesarily. There hasn't been a test case yet but you'd have to be the unluckiest person ever to get stung for using a jammer.
I've been using an iPAQ with the navman sleeve for my gps sat nav, just ordered the trafcam software for it from www.trafcam.com , looks pretty good, same features as the others but you can use the IPAQ for all sorts of other things too!
Cost about £700 all in off ebay.
I'll let you know if it's any good once the software arrives.

Got the software yet?
I was looking at the Trafcam site, as I also have the Navman Jacket with an iPAQ navigation system (Pocket Co Pilot). The trouble is, it looks as if its not possible to run the nav system at the same time as the Traf Cam.
I would guess that there would be quite a few occasions when you would want to do just that, particularly if travelling in an unfamiliar region. Thats the reason for the nav system....??

Doh! About as much use as a car you can steer or brake but not both at the same time:(
Maye the sat.nav. suppliers will see the market potential and add it to their systems. I would be very tempted by a Sony MEX-100NV
single DIN unit, but only if it did speed camera warnings too.

Is it worth having though?
It seems to me that this application will only really be of benefit if it is kept up to date. What are the arrangements for updating the software?
