The absolute best (which is also free :D ) is DVD2SVCD which, coincidentally enough will convert from DVD to SVCD in one go. Just stick the DVD in and some hours later you will have the CD images ready to burn.

Check out:

http://forum.doom9.org/ for lots of good advice.

read this thread:

and this thread:

for good tips.

and here's the homepage: http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net/

If you want to convert to plain old VCD, there's some good guides here:

Will that record to DIVX format?

If not, got any good recommendations for something that will complete a conversion to DIVX? I've seen a few vids from the net in DIVX format, and I was very impressed considering the amount of compression being used.

Chances are they were just ripped directly to AVI (DIVX ;) ) from the DVD using XMPEG (I think thats the name, it's been a while since I've done this and the proggie has been renamed)

For converting to DivX, you need to use VirtualDub, available (for free!) from http://www.virtualdub.org/

Don't you rate "DVD Ripper" then? I tried it last night but you need about 4 other programs too:eek: .
Nice colour car by the way M8:) (same colour as mine);)

If I'm doing a VCD (which isn't very often these days, seeing as converting to SVCD doesn't take long on my dual cpu machine), I use SmartRipper to rip the DVD, followed by DVD2AVI to convert the audio to wav, followed by BitrateView for VOB info, followed by TMPGEnc for the conversion. Using DVD2SVCD for doing SVCDs is very easy. Just stick the DVD in, start it off, and some hours later, the images are ready to burn.

Cheers, I think it's a good colour too :D

DVD2SVCD will create the CD images for you, ready to burn with any bin and cue compliant CD writing software. If your DVD player won't play SVCD you might as well just create VCDs in the first place. Just follow the guide @ http://www.dvdripguides.com/ It will tell you exactly what software to use and what settings to use. It will also tell you how to split the final MPEG to burn. You just use TMPGEnc for the conversion and for splitting the MPEG. It's easy. Oh and please DON'T use Nero to burn the MPEGs, use VCDEasy. Download it from here: http://www.vcdeasy.org/ and follow the guide here: http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdeasyhowto.htm

 . I managed to burn a disk last night and it worked fine. I came to do another today but when I get to the point where you choose the input file in TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 it does not recognise the dv file:( . It does recognise the sound file though.
Why would this be? DVD2AVI seemed to work OK but the end file is not recognised. Any ideas plz:confused:  .

I take it you mean that when you load the DVD2AVI project file into TMPGEnc, it says it doesn't recognise the file format? If so, I've seen this problem before with a previous version of TMPG. Are you using the latest version? Anyway, the way I solved it was to delete the wav and the project file created by DVD2AVI, run DVD2AVI again, and create the project all over again. It was the only way I could get it to work. I haven't seen that one rearing it's head for the last few versions though.

Go to http://www.pegasys-inc.com/e_main.html for the latest version of TMPGEnc Plus, or http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html for the latest version of TMPGEnc standard. I haven't had any of the "unrecognised file format" type errors for the last few versions.
