my main computer wont recogize my 12 in 1 card reader...it knows its there
but cant read whats on it
tryed it on the G/F laptop and it works fine..
its supposed to be just plug and play (no drivers needed with xp)
I have uninstalled everything and re tryed it..same thing...nothing..
the next thing Im going try is whacking it against the wall :wack:

The whacking against the wall usually does the trick,or sometimes a gentle tap off a size 10 shoe brings it back inline

If the readers/flash drive have been picked up by windows and can be seen in 'Device Manager' then I'm not sure what you can do. Trying a different USB socket is an option, I find this solves similar issues with bluetooth dongles.

If it hasn't been picked up then do a 'scan for hardware changes' in device manager which should find a new device. If not, then it looks like that USB port is out of action  In such cases "whacking it against the wall" might make a difference :wack:

Is this a USB card reader? sometimes if you have lots of other devices plugged in you can run into power issues.

Unplug all other USB devices first.

Also do you have any network drives mapped? If so unmap anthing around F-J.

Try this- control panel>administrative tools>computer management>Disk management - if you can see you removable drives on the left hand side then you may need to assign it a differnent drive letter for your pc to be able to access the contents.

or right click on my computer and select Manage:)

Doubt it's a drive letter issue if you're not on a network as you'd need to have C D E and F in use. Possible if you've got two hard drives and two CD/DVD drives though.

The power problems sliver mentions are most common on Viatech motherboards, especially those for early Athlons. If you've got one unplug some stuff :wack:

Get driver updates from here http://www.usbman.com/Drivers%20and%20Patches.htm, starting with the XP ones at the bottom.

Thinking about it the chances are you'll need to reinstall XP from disc as the USB drivers are probably corrupted, but try the above first.

Right.........

I've already had a few goes at this and I am STUMPED apart from a fresh install of XP...

the Usb Card reader SHOULD be a simple PLUG & PLAY scenario, BUT... when it was first inserted:ghey: .... Windows DID find new hardware....

The extra Drive letters are appearing, but we are UNABLE to browse the drive...

NO network drives are mapped....

I have removed the the drivers that installed automatically and used the drivers that came with the Card reader.......

I've then removed THESE drivers and allowed windows to install it's own as 'NEW HARDWARE'......

I can plug my card reader in and it works fine........

I can plug my card reader in Tone's G/f Laptop and it works fine

I can plug His Card reader in his G/f and it works fine

I can plug his card reader in his PC and NOWT !! :annoyed:

I've run a microsoft update while the card reader was connected to see if there were any new drivers... :wack:

so there you go........ thats where we are.. :(

Maybe - it could be the simplest problem of all. The card reader is fecked up the butty.

I've had USB pen drives fail and display all sorts of wierd behaviour before, including working on some PC's but not others, before finally dying to death. No reason why a card reader couldnt do the same.

jeezus, you'll be asking for it in crayon next :wack:

have you got many devices ( mouse, keyboard, memory card, printers etc) plugged in at the same time.

have a look at the box for the card reader, does it say usb 1 or 2 anywhere?
USB 2 is just higher speed usb, bit newer, looks the same, uses the same ports etc :)

ignore the bios bit for now.
