View Full Version : Project V8 S13 (56K!!!!!)
Hi all,
Just thought Id share the crazy project I have took on with and for a mate!:) I am going to put up as many pics as I can so please enjoy.
The car
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/13.jpg
the engine
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/20.jpg
got carried away with stripping it when we got it, forgot to take a pic of the complete engine:wack:
The engine is a 318 chrysler lump its a 5.2 so should have a nice amount of touque to play with:D
First thing was bye bye ca18:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/21.jpg
We then started sorting the engine bay rust wise so we could spray it
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/3.jpghttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/4-1.jpg
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/10.jpghttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/11.jpg
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/6-1.jpghttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/9.jpg
one grinds and the other welds:D
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/5-1.jpghttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/8-1.jpg
Hmmm V8! Lovelly! Nice project, I'll look forwards to you keeping us up to date.
How much does it weigh? What will it do to the weight distribution? What will it put out? Make sure you don't silence it at all!
Looks like its going to be an ‘interesting’ project
:D

The Noise 2 Black Lines Car makes is Unreal lol!!
Now the attention turns to the engine:D cleaning it was a major task thick oil sludge from years of no regular services:rolleyes:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/19.jpg:eek:
after a hot bath and a bit of wet n dry
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/23052006001.jpg
We are at the stage of getting the position of the engine right to make up the mounts and then its rebuild time:D
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/14-1.jpghttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/22.jpg
not much clearence for the rad:wack:
Its very surprising how well it does fit:nod: as the gear shifter is in the right place for the original hole in the tunnel, the gearbox fits in the tunnel with minimal ''bashing'' for the clutch lever assembly and the sump fits nicely over the cross member as the ca's does and the anti roll bar will go on with loads of room. We are very worried with what is to come but we are having the attitude one thing at a time and its worked so far:wack: I will keep you updated when I can hope you like it so far
Thanks for looking
Dal

not sure on weight and power:confused: there are so many variations of this engine Im not sure just gonna get it on the rollers when its finished
Oh and its gonna have side exits:nod: :D :wack:

Another one! Cant wait... Will make sure i keep an eye on this :)
I hope that big ol V8 doesnt spoil the balance and handling once its all finished.
Looks like a monster project mate, hope it all goes well. You gonna give us regular updates?
Regular updates is not a problem. Thanks for your replys:thumbs:
V8's are incredibly compact engines contrary to popular belief.
Get an electric water pump to give you more clearance

I hope that big ol V8 doesnt spoil the balance and handling once its all finished.
It looks like an aluminium block and single cam per bank (total 16 valve), so I'll bet it doesn't weigh more that a CA18's 150kg (with turbo) .
http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/images/mop-318mlb.jpg (I'd imagine it's this one?)
Its single cam looking at the photos above. Tee cam slots in the middle above the crank, and the push rods come out of the access holes on the inside of each bank.
Good project... I have also helped with this.. by polishing one of the pistons :wack: No doubt, some more work is required until "road worthy" good project

as long as you don't mind not being able to see where you're going!!
Hi all
Not really much progress at the min as my s13 decided it didnt want to be on the road anymore:wack:
But the engine mount brakets are made ready to be welded, also we put the heads on which looks:cool: oh and we think we are gonna go auto cause its going to be soooooooo much easyer:nod:
I will post some pics up tom after work no probs:nod:
As for the zorsts I think we are going with small oval twin exits both sides flush with sideskirts just in front of the rear archs well thats the plan anyway!

When it comes to american v8s there's nought wrong with using the auto...practically every drag car uses an auto box.
And nice choice of engine mate...i'm just doing some research at the mo, rebuilding mine and my dad's 400ci pontiac soon..ish,lol.

03-09-2006, 19:50
Ahh, looking good, and a tidy one too. (sorry I missed it earlier!!)
I take it th350 or 400? for the box or are we going manual? I take it the engine position is dictated by the sump cos it could go back a few inches, I think - think!- you may feel it is a bit front heavy ( although the CA is no light weight) but could it be moved? Also, the chassis leg might need a bit extra plating added to support the mounts, I played safe and modded the front subframe, my mounts come up from this to the engine.
What carb are you going for? Cam etc....
And will you have to cut the bonnet, lol.:wack:
Good to see someone else has seen fit to use a proper engine!
Great build, cant wait to see it done

Lee (the owner of this car) made up this dash cluster got the gauges from America like most of the parts going to be a nice touch i think
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c243/driftingdal/10102006001.jpg
Thats pretty much it really, we are still waiting for a gearbox and the subframe bolt(i snapped:annoyed: ) to be made up to progress any further, but i will update as soon as I can

That may be a matter of opinion! but we want a v8 not a jap engine thanks for opinion though:thumbs:
Vaughn:wave: The gauges are from summit racing in america very good price cheack out their website hope to see you soon mate.
What do the gauges measure, speed, rpm etc???
Seeing as you've taken the fuel tank off will you be going for a fuel cell in the boot?

The middle one does speed/rpm and some other stuff like o-60,1/4 mile time etc, the other two are water pressure and oil pressure, the fuel gauge will be mounted in a pillar pod.
Yeah we are going for a fuel cell which arrived friday, mainly because of the fuel pump, as we just could find one at the right pressure that didnt need to be lower than the tank.
cheers Dal:thumbs:
Awsome project, very impressive work!!
Where can I get some of those gauges and the plate and copy what youv'e done??
It looks brilliant!
Do a search for summit racing, they sell them. The 'plate' was made out of mdf and covered but you need the right senders not sure if they will be the same being they use different thread types in america.

 - do a search on this as someone on here tried to do it and ended up not finishing it due to the problems it caused..

I should have my car on the road soon...
Jesus, how long has that been?!?
Jesus, how long has that been?!?
8 months :(
We had a few problems along the way... plus I put the car on hold for a while as I wasnt in Kent for the best part of 2 months.. I was also intending on going abroad with work for a month... so I estimated Jan as the completion date... BUT all of this has changed and now im picking the car up tomorrow... and it will be running with MOT and Tax by Sat....
Dont forget my last car was stage 2 with fecked bottom end.... when the car is back with me... it will have a BRAND new rebuilt engine with chip upgrade, cluth, brakes, FMIC, you name it... its happened
Ive been driving a 1.0l Micra around so jumping into a car that has the potential of 300bhp is rather appealing

Oh yes, this really is an excellent thread.
Believe me lads, there is nothing like driving a car with a V8 in, especially with a Good exhaust system that lets everyone know you have a proper engine fitted.
Its going to be pretty mental when its finished

sweaty betty, that things gonna shift! love the B&M shifter! Are you still using the stock 200sx diff? Got a feeling that will take on similar properties as a kitkat wrapper once the torque starts a-flowing!
This looked the absolute bollocks when I saw it on Saturday, so much excellent fabrication has taken place by both Dal and Lee.
You should start up your own company! :D

i take it the sump is fouling on the steering rack or crossmemer? had this prob with my last V8. Can be solved occasionally by whipping sump off, rotating the oil pickup 180 degrees and then chopping the flange off the sump and rewelding it 180 degrees around. Do some baffling while your at it!;)

Nice job, just one question:
How are you taking the manifold around the subframe?
The manifolds clear the subframe, If you mean exhaust its a bit hard to explain but its going around and under the front of the subframe. Its a bit low really but with the fat tyres and a little hight adjustment she'll be speed bump proof! Ill get some pics for tomorrow hopefully.
dal i cant wait till i come down next week...wen you reckon she will be running?
Hopefully the engine will be running tomorrow as we worked so hard today.

Agreed, absolutely awesome project, but what made you go with the Chrysler lump? Something like a small block Chevy or a Windsor Ford (or even a Cleveland) would make a lot more grunt, and the tuning possibilities for the pair are virtually endless. The 318 is quite weak in comparison to a 340 or a Chevy lump, so just make sure you don't lean on her too much mate.
Can't wait to see this one finished though, it'll be a credit to you.

The Edelbrock heads are lovely, just make sure you port match the intake manifold though....you may even be better off with a new one to take advantage of the heads, something like an Edelbrock air gap or even a Performer.
Have you considered the Indy Cylinder Heads version of the RPMs? They're arguably the best small block Mopar heads available........
http://aeroheadracing.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/edelbrockspecial.pdf
We already have the performer;)
Ill have a look into those cheers:thumbs:

Why is that a problem:confused:
Well ive got to give it to ya bum hole it looks and sounds the fecking nuts.
Well done mate.
Roger_Sausage
18-02-2007, 11:48
Why is that a problem:confused:
Not a problem as such, but the manifold probably flows a little more than the stock heads can cope with so there's a chance of reversion and disturbance of the airflow entering the intake ports on the heads. It'll still make power over the stock manifold because of the straighter intake runners and better fuel atomisation, just not as suited to stock heads as they are aftermarket. It's largely imaterial now because you're upgrading, but with the standard heads a dual plane manifold would probably have been more suitable as it boosts low down torque, as opposed to the single plane Performer manifold which is more suited to making high RPM power whilst sacrificing a little low down punch.
Cheers Greg:thumbs:

When I'm next in the country mate, yeah no problem  Any chance you'll be at the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod? I'll be there with the race car. I'm the other way round, I've always been a V8 man and new to Jap stuff! :wack:
The key to making grunt out of one of these old pushrod clunkers is air-flow. People get too hung up on port volume and size where cylinder heads and manifolds are concerned. You can have the most aggressive set of cylinder heads going, with HUGE inlet ports, but if they're too big then the flow speed of the air will be small. By restricting the flow speed, you restrict it's ability to breathe. The key is to have the fastest flowing ports, at the smallest size possible without restrictions, this will ensure the air rushes into the cylinders drawing lots of fuel with it and giving a big bang! This is why oval port heads are considered better than rectangular....as an oval port head has no corners there is less chance of restricting airflow, this means you can have a smaller port compared to rectangular head, but still maintain the volume of air/fuel that they can handle, albeit at a higher speed....which equals more RPM and more powah!!! :D
Other than that, there's not too much to tuning a normally aspirated muscle car lump. Once you have the fuelling set up nice, it's just a matter of playing with the timing until the maximum output is produced.
Roger_Sausage
18-02-2007, 13:26
Just reading through the start of your thread, the manifold you have is the dual plane version rather than the single type (Victor Jnr). Although not the "air-gap" type, this manifold is ideal for your application....unless you want to up the RPM in future, in which case it'll strangle the motor 6500-7000RPM.
Glad to hear that
Thanks for your help Roger, apprisiate it Ill let you know what meets we will be at
Cheers Dal

Yes mate its fecked, £40 was cheap but how many people want a 727 auto for a chrysler 318 in this country, I suppose thats why it went so cheap. It was only a cheap route at the moment to get it on the road to run it in, then recoup the funds and then get a better one as the power goes up.
:) :) :) The fuel tanks looks like nuclear case....:whip: :whip: :whip:
:) :) :) looks like a fuel cell to me:whip: :whip: :whip:

This is an interesting project. :) My brother is due to receive his chevy 5.7 v8 this week, which he is dropping into his rx7. After borrowing my mates 4.5 v8 cerbera a few weeks ago it has left me very tempted to look into dropping a 4.5 tvr motor into my s14a. I can't imagine what the cost may be but the tvr flat v8 sounds phenomenal.
sxbaz – nice to see another local chap on here!
definately dude, some local meets would b nice!.. its because dal is doin my mate sx stew's turbo gaskets nxt weekend so we both went down yesterday for a chat etc..

I took a few pics of the exhaust while she was on the ramp.
me and Lee had great fun making these up, very enjoyable job:nod:
Had to get these 180 degree bends to get round the sub-frame.

After the bend they go into a flexi section then into an American version of a cherry bomb silencer. Then straight into the tailpipe, sounds awesome but is too loud for the road so we are going to get some baffles to get it through its mot the take them out for shows etc.

Are you going to strip the car right down again and go for a proper full respray?
