During my many visits to The Catsle at Ambleside I was alway told that mere means lake and that you should never call it Lake Windermere.

I'm just a smartass southerner me :D

Having only lived in Windermere for 6 years and having never heard anyone say I'm just popping down to the Mere
or the water skiing on the mere is fantastic today.
Mind you I have on more than one occasion been accused of being a little parochial
;)

All the signs say 'Lake 1 mile', never seen one which say's 'Mere 1 Mile'

Think you're right though Mike (shandy drinking smartass southerner :p ) :D
