View Full Version : Aberdeen engine/car swap 25th June

This is posted here instead of in a normal area as a) we are using it as a meet, and b) Except for one exception it is local members only, sorry if this is wrong place I thought it was most suitable.
Following on from the local meet in Aberdeen on tuesday, here is the thread about it.
At the moment there is 3 options for the day.
1) Buy a replacement car: - if this happens then if people are still up for it we could change the mods over to the new car. The local-ish cars I can find are autos so we would need to take care of that aswell.
2) Buy a replacement engine: - if this happens just a case of swapping one for the other then, I'm left with an engine to try and rebuilt myself.
3) Repair engine: - This is the one I would prefer as it is of course much cheaper but less likely to be accomplished I would think, the current engine has metal fillings in the oil and big end failure.

I am going to, will have to do it later as I am having to go out, poor Lauren's been sitting since 8:45 to go out as I told her that's when we was leaving:rolleyes:.

As long as its a Sunday or any evening but not every second thursday I'm ok, what sort of time scale i.e. when do you want to make a start.
The dates the 24th, which is a Saturday.
So does this mean that between now and then you will have one of the above options sorted. Would it not be best to put off the date untill you have, say an engine??
testpilot
12-06-2006, 09:18
If I haven't sorted out any off the options in full the engine is still needing to come out and be checked, so this is a definate mate should have said.
If I haven't sourced an engine by then if that's the route I take or this engine is not repairable then I will be becoming a big girl, crying about it for a few weeks then giving up on the 200 (well this one at least) I'm afraid and looking for something else.
This thing owe's me alot and I haven't really got much driving out of it since I bought it, I've only done about 7k in it in 20 months:eek: of ownership. I have done over double that in the Vectra and I've only had it a few months, and I hate driving it, I need something to get rid of the stresses of work, driving a Vauxhall and the worst of all having a teenage daughter.

Never thought about the people who work the weekends, should have done a poll.
a) Saturday the 24th
b) Sunday the 25th
c) Either
and people could have said if they where free or not.
It was the Saturday that was mentioned to start with don't know if Jamie has something on as I think it was him that mentioned then:confused:
All day Sunday the 25th is a better idea I reckon, especially as we are just pulling the thing out so no need for the extra day incase we got held up swapping the engine.

Hopefully swapping engine, waiting for confimation about an engine should now on Thursday or Friday.

I'm ok for the 25th
funny thing is my car goes in for repair the day after :) not at SYLVIA's though.
We will get you up and running well before the trip down to Knockers for the GT Battle on the 1st, we might even twist Mikes arm into taken his secret squirrel car down.
We should really rename Gary's house Sylvia I think.
Don't know about the house, but we should name the garage sh*thole the state it's in! Will be cleaned up before the 25th though. ;)
Add me to the list, can i use the grinder this time :wack:

Well I have placed an order for an engine hoist, I was trying to book one and because I wsa having to collect on the Friday and drop off on the Monday, and wasn't sure of time they was wanting a weeks hire instead of weekend rate.
I have a mate who works for a company linked to the hire place I was going to use to see if he could sort it out for me, but unfortunatly he's drummer and never on time. so I decided to buy one instead then I'd have it when ever it was needed, which hopefully wouldn't be too often.
The company I am supposed to be getting the engine from was ment to call me yesterday but didn't:cry: so going to leave it until this afternoon then give them a call and see what's happening. The container didn't come in until yesterday afternoon so didn't really expect them to get back to me was just hoping.
Any news Adrian?? They got in contact yet?
testpilot
16-06-2006, 20:39
Spoke with the very nice man today, he said the engine has arrived but they haven't had it tested yet. There is a choice of two and he is going to get back to me on Monday after it is tested and let me know how he gets on.
Fingers crossed.
Good stuff mate. When you wanting to take the car out here?

Sunday if that's okay with you, unless I can get up tomorrow afternoon. Going to Ayrshire in the morning to pick up a car with my brother.
As this is a members only event, having been given the suggestion from Kev, (thanks mate  ) the tab for the food and drink for the day is going to be picked up by the club. So if anyone has anything specific they would like for the barbie let me know as I'll be getting all the stuff. :Plug:

Sunday would be best mate... as that's my 'garage' day.
testpilot
16-06-2006, 21:06
That is a very kind offer but I don't think it exactly fair I don't think the club should pay for me to fit an engine.
Unless they want to cover my normal hourly rate:rolleyes:.
testpilot
16-06-2006, 21:08
Sunday fine with me pal, still need to sort out how to get it there but that's a different story.
That is a very kind offer but I don't think it exactly fair I don't think the club should pay for me to fit an engine.
It's not for fitting the engine, it's because we are using the day as an event for members only Adrian. Club spirit is what this is all about, so if you want look at it as the club saying thanks to all the members attending for keeping the spirit alive. Anyway, if you think about it what better event for a bunch of petrolheads than this! Spanners, oily hands, engines and a barbie.
Never thought you'd be concerned about free grub :p

18-06-2006, 19:49
Well guys, we are getting ever closer and I am in need of another favour.
I can get a trailer to move the car but I'm struggling to get something to actually tow it with, does anyone have a car or van with a towbar that can pull a trailer with a car on it.
Cant be that far a tow can it mate??
I towed a Vectra GSi (2.5 Lump) up to my mums 13 miles away with the s13 lol
was interesting to say the least...
Sure your veccy could pull it :)
It's going around 30 miles mate, so towing isn't an option.

Ohh ahh well...
Knew there was a reason... lol
Ill go sit in the corner now and be good ;)

19-06-2006, 15:40
Well if my bad luck wasn't bad enough already, my walbro fuel pump has packed in, and the guy was supposed to phone me today to confirm the engine is fine after testing and he hasn't tried to call them myself and he wsa busy the first time I called and was out the second time.
I hate it when companies let you down like this, so it is looking likely as I am not going to have an engine now and I'm really not wanting to go and spend more money on a pump, gaskets oil etc until I have an engine.
I know I keep saying it but I'm getting closer to quiting again.
testpilot
19-06-2006, 17:03
Well the very nice lady has called back to say she has spoken to the guy who was supposed to phone me back and he has confirmed that one of the engines are fine after testing and he will give me a call tomorrow to make final arrangements with me.
So here's hoping that it and I don't have any others problems except for the fact one of my brake calipers would seem to be seized.:annoyed:
It will have been all worth it when I am able to go to KH in a couple of weeks.
glens14a
19-06-2006, 18:40
It will have been all worth it when I am able to go to KH in a couple of weeks.

As Glen said Adrian, I know this is all getting to you mate but stick with it. Every cloud has a sliver lining and all that b*llocks. :)

20-06-2006, 10:44
 :furious: Another deadline been and gone and again the guy is unavailable:furious:
Dont think i'm gonna make this now mate  But do hope you get this guy whipped into shape and if not name and shame
Thats a shame Graham, I hadn't told Adrian but I bought some new discs for the grinder just for you. :smash: ;)
hang on in there Adrian
perhaps take your engine out and refurb it yourself, then you'll know it's good?
testpilot
20-06-2006, 20:55
Well finally spoke with the guy today at around 4pm:mad:, after small conversation asked for confirmation that everything had been checked? to which he said "Yes of course!" then asked him what like was the big end bearing? to which he said "Don't know we didn't check these"
O that's a pity cause I'm sure we have already had this conversation that the bearings are a mare on these engines and this is why I have lost the last 2!
He said they will get them checked tomorrow and will give me a call back:mad:
Going to be touch and go for getting the engine up here in time if they don't pull their finger out. Any joy on a towbar'd motor yet?
testpilot
21-06-2006, 06:56
The only thing on the positive he did say was he will get it out for overnight delivery so if it goes out today it should be at my work tomorrow.
I phoned someone yesterday who I had remembered had a 4x4 and it does have a tow bar, but he is at see for the next 2 weeks, his missus said she would try and get a message to him to see if I could borrow it and I was ment to phone back lastnight at around 6.30:rolleyes:
Notice how I said ment to phone, totally forgot and never phoned until about 7.50 and she was away out by then, will try again today so keep my fingers crossed.
testpilot
21-06-2006, 13:54
Well I have spoke with Simon again today about my engine and he tells me the bearings look brand new so here's hoping. It is going out to me today by overnight delivery so should have it tomorrow.
Sent the company who are supplying hoist a message the other day and they claim it has been sent out, so fingers crossed should get it tomorrow.
Need to go and get oil, coolant, gaskets and what ever else I can't remember about.
Was trying to get this ready for Eurodrift but looking like this isn't going to happen as I have to do alot more work to the car than I thought to get it ready for this but at least I can take the car down anyway.
glens14a
21-06-2006, 16:11
What's the time scale for the day (what time is everyone going out) I might have to swing out later or bum a lift off someone.
The missus either needs me to run her down to Edzell by 10.30 and pick her up later on, or I "TRUST" her with the car and she gets lost and ends up in Edinburgh
Sorry I haven't posted sooner, been snowed under at work and the laptop at home is acting up.
25th is fine with me, as Glen asked what time are we planning to start? I've got a friends birthday BBQ on the Saturday afternoon and into the evening so I won't be able to drive silly early but I'll definately be there:thumbs:
Stick with it Adrian, we'll get her sorted:nod: It'll all be worth it when you're back drifting:thumbs:
Gaz, can you pm me your address so I know where I'm going. Cheers.
testpilot
21-06-2006, 20:28
It's really up to Gary what time it will kick off, I was thinking of getting there as early as possible but its down to him.
On another positive side, went out at 5.50pm and came home to find a notice left through the door from ANC trying to deliver hoist, I'm going to phone them tomorrow and go and get it collect so that's another thing sorted, just waiting for delivery of the new pump and everything is a goer.
Seemingly there is 2 types of walbro pumps an uprated one and a motorsport one, I've gone for the motorsport one which is supposed to be the better out of the 2.
testpilot
21-06-2006, 21:07
I have now sorted out the use of a 4x4 my only problem now is to try and get the trailer and the Jeep at the same time.
Gaz, can you pm me your address so I know where I'm going. Cheers.
You have pm Jamie.
Glad it's all coming together finally, give me a phone Adrian when you've arranged the 4x4 and the trailer. Any evening between now and Sunday is fine.
As for start time on the day itself, I'll leave it up to you Adrian. My darling daughter has taken it into her head that 5am is now the perfect time to start the day so we will be up from then. Will say that I'll probably start work on the car before you guys get here to give us a bit of a head start. Probably get the car up in position and drain off the fluids.
testpilot
21-06-2006, 21:56
I'll get up there early, what time are you thinking of starting I'll be there then.
Can't get a hold of the person for the trailer at the minute, but as long as I get a hold of them tomorrow, I'll have the 4x4 at around 4pm tomorrow.

22-06-2006, 12:41
I have now got the engine hoist in my possesion, bit bigger than I thought it was going to be, it's in pieces and needs building, but once it's built not sure if I could get it in the car.
It's looking like saturday to get the car transported, and still no sign of the engine. Working tomorrow morning and might even have to work in the afternoon:cry: Well not really as I need the money.

Another update, at 13:15 today the warehouse recieved delivery of the engine.
http://www.imgbox.co.uk/uploads/0402b46008.jpg
All that I'm waiting for now is a fuel pump as the one in the car is fubbered:rolleyes:.
Just bought the oils and coolant I need still think I have forgot something.
Glad its arrived :) Panic over! If you want to come up for say 7.30am on Sunday that would be fine with me for an early start.

No problems mate will see you then, still need to find a way of getting the engine up, it's on a small pallet but can't see the forklift being able to get past the vectr's tailgate.
Working on it will let you all know.

It will fit into the boot of the Vectra it's just getting it in there that's the problem. If a couple of people was handy Saturday morning to help lift it in then it wouldn't be a problem.

Not sure what time I'm working to yet, but will give you a call when I have a better idea.
I might see if we can just hand lift it into the back of the car at some point today, so at least I have it.
Will let you all know.
Send me a sms when you have an idea of the time... my phone will be on silent. I'm still behaving myself in my new office. :D
testpilot
23-06-2006, 09:02
Don't tell anyone but I might have a nice new office soon aswell, not sure yet depends on what they offer me. The other good thing is I don't need to go in and behave cause they already know me as I have worked for them in the past.
It's a kind of annual event they get in touch with me and offer me a job, sometimes I take it sometimes I don't, last year it was a twice annual event I felt really special, still said no both times tho.:wack:

23-06-2006, 12:30
Well it's official I have another problem, trying to build the hoist just now and the first bilt I tried to put in isn't lining up correctly. It isn't drilled straight if you get what I mean.
Checked through the rest and they appear to be alright, the one that isn't straight is the one the holds the top arm on, with it like this the arm won't be straight out but come out to one side is this likely to be a problem?
Pump has arrived but not sure if it's the correct one looks much smaller than the last one, will go and take the other pump out soon and have a look.

23-06-2006, 16:43
It's cool, I've already taken the other pump out and it is the exact same one, all the numbers are the same.
Have refitted the new pump to the holder, but needed to come home and check the manual to see how the sender fits on as it is just floating about inside the tank, no wonder I never knew how much fuel I have in the car.
Going back over just now to put it all back together.
Just had another look at the engine as there was something that bugged me about it, the bar stewards have taken the flywheel off aswell, wish I had known about this before as I got have got the spare one skimmed ready for fitting and could have also got some bolts for it as I think your not supposed to reuse the flywheel bolts. Could be wrong.
Just spotted this thread guys, I'm offshore at the moment having a mare of my own. Best of luck tomorrow save me a burger, cheese red sauce and mustard oh and some onions would be nice.

23-06-2006, 18:36
The car is running again, so fuel pump fitting was successfull and my fuel gauge works now I think, it says I have half a tank of fuel it hasn't said that for months.
What's the problem Dia, is it work or the car you are having a mare of a time with?
Will they not chopper you off the rig and then chopper you back?:wack:

glens14a
23-06-2006, 19:23
will it drive to Boddam?
or AA/RAC it the rest of the way :D
testpilot
23-06-2006, 19:37
I have only changed the pump mate, the big ends are still gone, it probably would drive up there I think I did about another 200 miles or so with the last engine big end gone, but want to try and save this one for a possible repair or full rebuild.
Would you believe me if I told you I don't have RAC/AA cover, I keep meaning to get it but don't will make a point of getting it real soon.
u got the engine in the Vectra?
testpilot
23-06-2006, 19:43
Well you see it's like this, being the lazy bar steward that I am I went to the warehouse to collect it today and the storemen had gone home early, going down in the morning and I think it should go in the boot of the 4x4, just don't have a clue how we are going to get it back out of it.
glens14a
23-06-2006, 20:09
to put it in the Vectra just take the tailgate off :)
and to get it back out on Sunday just open the tailgate as normal, then jack the front of the Vectra up as far as you can and let gravity take over :D
You could make it even easier by parking the Vectra in front of the 200 and dropping it straight in :D
You could make it even easier by parking the Vectra in front of the 200 and dropping it straight in :D
Now that sounds like my kind of plan. :D
2 of us should be able to lift the engine out Adrian, me and Mike manage to lift a CA in and out of a van before. If not we could use the engine hoist to do it.
Take it there is no veggie requests for the barbie... I'm going to buy all the stuff tommorrow so if anyone wants anything specific then speak up now!

23-06-2006, 20:57
Not sure it's quite as easy as that but I suppose we could give it a try.
The Hoist I have bought is a 2 tonne one so we could just lift the front of the vectra up with it.

What colour are the stickers you have Glen, the reason I ask if they are black that's fine for the back of the car, but it aint going to be any use for the front.
Was thinking of getting a few tins of primer and painting the bumper.

Car is in Gary and I am home, trailer and 4x4 dropped off.
Going to get my dinner now.
See you all tomorrow.
Glad to report that:
a, the car is here!
b, the new shiny engine is here!
and most important of all...
c, I've bought all the food for the barbie!! :)
So we are ready to go tomorrow!

An even bigger grinder than last time :-)

Would prefer the Vectra in Aberdeen aswell though just incase there is any problems with the car as I need a car for work.
Believe Jenn and Jamie are both coming out tomorrow, so I guess you could ask nicely for one of them to take it back in.

Was going to come on here when I got home but was still really annoyed so have managed to watch the game and the F1 before seeing this.
Well guys, I would like to say a big thanks to in no partically order, Gary, Jamie, Glen and Mike for all of there efforts. A special thanks to Jenn for shearing the bolt off:rolleyes:
Well the car is all put back together but unlike the last time turned the key and no fire:cry:
We are hoping it is just timing as I tried to cut a corner fitting the CAS to the engine as the people I bought it from didn't even supply that.
At 9:30pm we decided enough is enough Gary and me had been at it since 7:30 in the morning.
Going back up on Tuesday night to give it one last go, and as said it should just be a case of setting base timing, getting it running then setting the timing correctly.
Once again thanks guys for all your efforts.
Was a good day, even if the thing refused to start.
I'm sure it will fire up tomorrow evening, was partly my fault as I said Adrian should just take a flyer at the timing as it was getting on a bit. :o

It was a brilliant day for the most of it the sun was shining, there was a heap more work needing done to the engine than first thought as the had taken everything of except for Plenum and injectors everything else was gone.
They even took all the brackets and one of the engine mounts. I maybe expected too much for my money.
Some of the bits I want to buy for the car are now going to have to be put on hold aswell, as some more expenses have came up that I need to get sorted before I can think of toys.
Thanks again for all your help guys, I am still in total agony all over and still felt a bit light headed today and still do not used to all this hard work.
I am in debt to you all, anytime I can help let me know.
Serivce on Jenn's car next, the hoist is at the ready to make it easier to get the oil filter off:rolleyes:
we're getting pretty good at it if i say so myself... the engine and gearbox dropped in so easily!
Adrian, is it worth you asking the bloke who sold it to you for permission to take the rocker cover off, then you're covered? If he says no then I expect you'll have a suitable response :D

Ment to phone him today, but didn't get round to it, will phone him tomorrow.
Only problem is we may have to take the engine back out and strip it again depending on the response that I get from him.

if we do this can I be present if you need to insert the engine into a particular orifice?

It will be sent down in pieces as I bounce it off the limiter with no oil in it.

Well quite simple really, sell a product to someone and force them to invalidate warranty when fitting it.
Quite clever really when you think about it.
Adrian obviously didn't have time last night to post but I'm proud to announce...
It lives again!!!
Set up the base timing and it started up first turn of the key. :notworthy What a bloody relief that was. :)

Yeah, sorry guys should have at least had the decency to post up here and let everybody know. On the way home I got Lauren to text Mike, Glen and Jamie to let them know, I didn't even spend much time online as I had too much work to do.
Couple of teething problems which I am going to try and have a look at today but I'm stuck in the office most of today I think.
Once again guys thanks for all you help couldn't have done it without your help.
