What exactly is a hit? My sites been getting used more and more and had 167000 hits in September but what exactly is a hit? Is 167K good, bad or indifferent as it means nothing to me.

A 'hit' is each time a web browser looks at a page.

It could be one person visited 167k different pages on your site,

Or 167k people all looked at the first page and bug*ered off ;)

Or 1 person hit 'refresh' 167k times on one page  It wasn't me, btw ;)

Short answer is you've had 167K individual user session on your site, 1 person can come back to your site 50,000 times and it's registered as 55K user sessions.

Hope that helps

Simon

So is that good or bad? How many hits should a small retail site be looking at getting?

You really need to be looking at Individual user to the site and lenght of time spent on the site.

Depends how much revenue it's generating. ;) :)

erm i thought a hit was for each page component (gif, jpg, include file etc)?

Page accesses is more accurate.
Some really clever stats packages look at session time and IP address to actually try and determine how many different people have looked at a site. Still impossible to be 100#% accurate but not bad nevertheless

I'd say 167K is very good if it is individual accesses, but if it's 1 hit - 1 component it's not so good. but even if you have 10 components per page it's still 16.7k pages innit.
I'll let you know for sure tomorrow as i have about 300 SME websites on a server at work.

cheers,
Jezz.

How many people visited the first page? http://www.apexperformance.co.uk/catalog/default.php ?

That is prolly the best indcation you'll get.

like i said I'll have a look at some of the site I have to see what kind of figures they are getting.

TBH though Bren, I imagine most people here just ask you if they want summat, i do.

This is only the second time I've been to your site.

Jezz_s13 got it right.

Hits to a website are very misleading. As you could have 50 elements (graphics, buttons, rollovers, photos, etc) on just one page and it'll make your site sound good... great when selling to advertisers, but the real indication is page impressions (or page accesses as jezz calls it). a popular website will have several hundred thousand page impressions...

anyway for your site as its commercial you need to determine where the visits you do get are of those staying to view your site, and then if they are actually buying products off your site. If its purely people visiting the home page then leaving then its possible you've misregistered your site on search engines. You need to figure out if they are staying and if they are then why people might not be having their visit converted into a purchase.

good luck :)

This got me interested in the stats for this site, and I checked how many page views we get.

We average nearly a million pages a month

:p We also get an average of over 80,000 visits a month! No wonder we use so much bandwidth :(

'ere, isn't it time for your next cheque ;) I'll do you a receipt this time, honest... (shall I do it for 6 months?)
