Why is it CV writing, and the job hunting process is the most demoralising thing, ever? Heh :(

And why is it that when you come to re-write and update your CV, you're just reminded of how little you've achieved, and how useless you sound on paper? Bah!

Any advice peoples, please? :)

Lie.

Hardly anybody ever checks and provided you don't put down something rediculous you're almost certain to get away with it.

:D :D

Alternatively, do an internet search for CVs, you'll find plenty of inspiration there :)

On Pazza's suggestions;

Name: D-San Takahashi
Occupation: Master Doridorifan!
Uh..

:D

This is what I have thus far:

2000 – present- Elim International Church Headquarters, Cheltenham

An international Christian denomination provided a wealth of opportunities to expand knowledge and experience in an office-based environment. Roles varied and flourished
as understanding of the organisation and its fundamental workings increased.

o Accounts Assistant

The initial role involved the sorting, inputting and implementation of grossly backlogged data. The data was sorted, inputted, then collated into statistical and analytical reports using Sovereign Sage Line 100, and Lotus Notes. Through these tasks, debtors were identified allowing the organisation to minimise potential losses.

o IT Management

As the organisation grew increasingly dependent on information technology, the need for constant maintenance of both the base server (WinNT, ArcServe, MSExchange, Lotus Domino), and the workstations (Win98SE, and all associated software.) also arose. As an enthusiastic home user of IT systems, the opportunity was given to provide first line support within the office, culminating in a position that involved direct communication with all contracted service providers in order to provide a sufficient and stable IT environment. All data backups, and updates were also fundamental aspects of this role. Despite no formal IT Qualifications, a strong basic knowledge provided ample foresight for diagnosing and maintaining a network of 25 workstations.

o Graphic Design | Desktop Publishing

Within the organisation

So we're getting somewhere.. just need to finish up the roles for Elim (my only full time employment, I might add) write in size 1 font that I only have my GCSEs, and I'm pretty much done really..

Argh..

...

the occasional need for Graphics/DTP prompted a further addition to a plethora of roles. Requirements of this role included presenting potential corporate identities to management, The production of presentations (Using MSPowerpoint.) for distribution throughout the 500+ Churches associated to the organisation, and the creation and placement of corporate design for the promotion and designation of multiple annual conferences. Although specialised software wasn’t available, using a keen creative desire and productive nature, results of a high standard were produced. (Paint Shop Pro, PhotoShop, MS Products.)

Almost there..

at the top of the cv below your personal details eg telephone number, put a personal profile and skills list

example
Personal Profile
An experienced, highly competent, IT Support Consultant, instrumental in provision of key technical support services to all levels within the organisation. An extensive background with premier market leader in the financial service sector. Consistent record of achievement in planning and development of corporate computer systems.

Professional Skills
Key skills include WinNT, ArcServe, MSExchange, Lotus Domino, Win98SE, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoShop and MS Office Suite.

also i wouldnt mention the lack of IT quals. if they dont notice then tough for them. you're just highlighting a weakness in your cv!

good luck

D, mate, initial thoughts on what you have put down...

Accounts Assistant
--- Hmm, whatabout Institute Financial Specialist - Analysis of Financial Records, processes and loss management.

IT Management
-- cool title. Manages, controls and supports every aspect of internal/external data communication via network, indiviual workstations and base server.

Another thing - please DON'T lump "presenting corporate identities" and "corporate design" in with "graphic design/DTP" - in my book they are completely different! (Maybe I'm speaking from the background of advertising...)

Hows about:

Corporate Image Development
Conference design

Sounds more like an Internal Corporate Marketing Specialist role

***
How that's been of some garbled use...

Des used to look at a lot of CVs. He always advised printing them out on a good quality paper - slightly heavier than usu - so that they stood out. (I think a different colour of paper is slightly ott -which is the other thing he mentioned!)

Hope it helps :)

Keep it short and to the point.
Some Job Titles need updating in my opinion.

My last Job, my title was Network Engineer ( I got a lot more repsonses when I changed the title to Network Support Analyst.)

Make your good points stand out. These will always overshadow any things that you omitted.

It's a bit pedantic, but I'd steer clear of inventing words like "inputted". If I were reading some CV's, that's exactly the kind of thing that would make up my mind in a "tie-break" situation.

Unless you're applying to be a golf pro..... ;)

Alternatively, you could always apply for crap jobs where the only CV they require is a piece of paper with your name (spelt correctly, mind!) written on it.

That's my general technique :D

What sorta jobs were you going for?

I always fancied being a dodgy second-hand car salesman - I've got enough experience! :D :D ;)
