View Full Version : Rules of the Road - A Warning
To every driver on the roads of Britain today:
When approaching a roundabout, check that the road in clear. Obey the road markings. If lanes are NOT defined then you must treat them as follows (two lane roundabouts)
LEFT LANE - you may turn left or go straight ahead.
RIGHT LANE - you may turn right or go straight ahead
Three laners (into 3 lanes):
LEFT LANE - left, ahead
CENTRE LANE - Ahead only
RIGHT LANE - right, ahead.
Any contravention may well result in a rather large, very quick and hefty Starion making intimate contacts...
***************
Am I alone in having such huge problems with people cutting in front of me on roundabouts ? (eg left lane turning right while I am in the right going straight over)?

Nope, you are not alone....
It also pisses me right off when people don't understand how roundabouts work!

Nope, the general population simply cannot drive. Makes for frustrating progress when you have to assume every other road user is a complete moron doesn't it :(
I have always been under the impression - and was taught this on my lessons many moons ago that:
Left lane was straight on or left.
Right hand lane for turning right - ie a turn past 12 o'clock as you approach the roundabout. (unless lane markings suggest otherwise)
.............and on a clear roundabout, I belive it is acceptable for your front wheels to be in the right lane, and the rear wheels to be in the left - to accomodate the width of a sideways car :D :D
RIGHT LANE - you may turn right or go straight ahead
Was in right lane at a roundabout yesterday and went straight on. Cop car pulled me over and I had a 15 minute lecture on the rules of the road and how people like me (in a sports car) drove like they owned the road
Even the fcuking traffic police (which is what he was, not a bobby in a patrol car) don't know the fcuking highway code
'tis unclear here:

When taking any intermediate exit
select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout, signalling as necessary
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.
***
I think that is clear enough. If the occupants of the left lane are signalling left, then you can keep the traffic flowing by taking the right to go straight over.
Of course, my comment only applies to 2 lane - 2 lane. IMHO 2-lane - 1-lane should always be
left - left and ahead
right - right only... IMO of course
When taking any intermediate exit
* select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout, signalling as necessary
I chose an appropriate lane and signalled. Didn't cut anybody up, but still got the lecture.

If there's a Dual Carrageway going it to a roundabout with left, right, and straight on avaliable, but all of these are single lane roads then the person in the left lane(going straight on) and the person in the right lane (going straight on) collide.
So which is it - left or right lane for straight on?

In this case left hand lane is left or straight on and right lane is right or 360 unless marked otherwise by 7ft long arrows which are to small for people around here to see   Oh and while were at it, and if your reading this STOP AIMING FOR THE ****ING APEX OF THE ROUNDABOUT AND NEARLY TAKING MY FRONT END OFF!!!!! dont people know how to turn a steering wheel anymore:rolleyes:

Thats how I do it as well, but there is always some cocky barstewards (in the right lane) that think there's no chance you'll be able to go round the outside as fast as they'll go on the inside. This results in you having to break and let them through, but half the time their initial assumption sticks so they haven't even looked to see if you're there
This means you've just breaked to avoid an accident, and they don't even know any thing about it!
This is one of my pet hates, I've had people giving me the ****er sign from going straight over in the left hand lane when theres only one bloody lane on the road we approached the roundabout from!!! funnilly enough mate, that right hand lane you're in is for TURNING RIGHT FFS!!!

I have this problem all the time!
Easy solution it to paint arrows for each entry lane then everyone knows where they stand!
I must admit some roundabouts are different to others and sometimes you just have to do what the majority of the other traffice is doing. Even if its not right.
"Campaign for arrows on roundabouts!!!" sod bloddy speed cameras!
Some (not many) of the roundabouts near me actually have fully arrowed and bordered lanes, this avoids any drifting between lanes and also avoids the problem of people not knowing which lane they are sopposed to be in.
Three lanes roundabouts with no road markings just turn into a free for all, with big fat cars (namely posers 4wd efforts) winning :(

Also if the there is a Festa RS Turbo on your right and you teach him that the run off area on a roundabout is.... the roundabout :D
So what has happened to your S13. I think I have missed something
How about 3 lane RB
Old git uses left lane to go all the way f'n round while i use the middle to go straight on:mad:
I was only doing 15mph and still nearly went in to the drivers door!?!?
The capper? He didn't even notice a thing:eek:
How about 2 lanes coming up to a 3 lane roundabout... left lane splits into 2... woman in right lane in 4x4 thinks she can drive into middle lane without indication, STRAIGHT INTO THE SIDE OF MY METRO!!
Of course I knew she would do it, so I stayed thre and let her hit me :evilbarsteward:. She started going on about how she had just passed he IAM test, but still she had to admit she was wrong at the end of the day - crossing a lane divider without indicating, when my lane split with no crossing of lines  Some people just CAN'T DRIVE. Women in 4x4's especially.
Come on, if you had a £50 Metro, you'd do the same... right?
It seems to be getting more common for people to enter a roundabout and then drive ALL THE WAY ROUND in the outside lane!
How the f*ck is THAT supposed to work????

I tend to find that drifting round, using both lines helps to stop nightmares like people using the inside lane to take the third or forth exit.
I hate the people who come into the roundabout in the inside lane, indicat left and take the third exit, a real pet hate!

or people who go right round the roundabout not indicating at all! so you pull out then this car comes round with no indication! Sooooo dangerous!
Mate of mine from went round the wrong way when he returned from a long holiday back home (Kuwait)

My Mum did some advanced training thing a few years ago and was told her driving was good but........she let herself down by indicating on roundabouts!

So it wasn't my mum then!
She passed her IAM test, then wrote the car off the next day. Her excuse was the Chevette had hopeless brakes and she was used to the Micra she'd been driving for the past 3 weeks, and wouldn't accept that she'd been driving too fast in the wet. Driver error? Oh no, no more than going down one-way streets the wrong way (poor signage) or doing 50 in a 30 zone (not her fault she was in a hurry) and she's never too drunk to drive (in her opinion). If she wasn't my mum.....
I'm particularly irritated by people who can't be bothered indicating. Is it un-cool, or is it just too much like hard work?
Shouldn't complain though, as if they all remembered to do everything properly then their brains would be able to cope with even less incoming info.

Hmm... not if she was in a 4x4... The potential of serious injoury to self would be too great, in my opinion... I never trust metros...
That's crazy Ripper isn't it?
Surely indicating on roundabouts should inform people and help reduced accidents.
Crazy world!
