Hi All,

After fitting my new super-duper stereo it seems my std speakers are SH!TE!!! .

I have space to fit 6" in the front doors and 6" in the rear tailgate...(It's a Sintra.... )

What's the difference between normal speakers and components???

What are the decent ones to buy??

Cheers

Hi JJ,

A component speaker (as opposed to a 2 way coaxial) is where the tweeter is a completely separate unit from the mid range speaker. You also get a separate crossover to connect the speakers to. On a 2 way coax, the tweeter is usually mounted on a pole stemming from the centre of the mid, which means the mid ends up have a hole down the middle of it which affects its sound quality. Some better coax's have the tweeter mounted on a bridge across the mid, therefore the mid has a dust cap in the middle which doesn't affect is ability to reproduce the sound properly, but you still don't usually get a separate crossover with these.
With a 2/3 way coax, the advantage is that you end up mounting a mid & tweeter in the same space, but get better sound that a regular dual/single cone speaker.
Only problem with a component system is you have to mount the tweeter independantly, so if you haven't already got a space for it, it means a little bit of chopping of your car's interior.
For driving the speaker of a head unit (and not an external amp) a 2 way coax will do the job extremely well, far better than the standard speakers. If budget allows, go for the bridge mounted types.
Hope this helps.
