Some peoples views, from here
http://bookatrack.com/-pV?19

Its not that I havent included the bad reviews, there arent any ....

There's so much to do at Oulton, you can keep going back for more. Being one of those hilly circuits, I love it. A good run to Old Hall can make you up a couple of places, as the circuit is pretty open until you reach Cascades. Druids has got to be one of my favourite corners, as it's a real test of bottle. You can usually take it quite a bit faster than you ever thought possible, but if you get it wrong, you can do your car some nasty damage. Because of the high speeds and heavy braking, it can be heavy on brakes, so beware of fade.

Bloody AWSOME! You have to drive this track at least one in your lifetime! It is the one of the best tracks in the county!

My all time favourite. I've done racing and track days here. Fantastic corners. Lodge is a favourite as the camber drops off so you need real b*lls.

Great fun! Fantastic mix of corners and long lap makes it feel like you're actually going somewhere (in contrast to say Donington or Brands Indy). Quite intimidating with some fast corners and limited run-off (Old Hall, Island and Druids in particular). Shell Oils Hairpin is fun, as are the two chicanes. Not too hard on the car. Overall perhaps not for beginners but I think its my favourite UK circuit. Just a shame its so far away!

THIS IS A MANS CIRCUIT THROUGH AND THROUGH. LIKE CADWELL, ONLY BETTER. WEAR A MANS SUIT, SOME BRUT AFTERSHAVE AND START A FEW FIGHTS BEFORE YOU VENTURE OUT TO TACKLE ISLAND, DRUIDS, CASCADES, OLD HALL AND LODGE. SERIOUS BALLSY TECHNICAL CORNERS FOR ADULTS. THINK MICKEY MOUSE ANGLESEY, THEN THINK THE OPPOSITE AND YOU HAVE OP. GOOD LUCK MOFOS !

Probably the most challenging and rewarding circuit in the country. A bit short of run off in places but a great mix of all sorts of corners.

real challenge- like Cadwell, Oulton is a place that you need some time to learn, one visit will not do it justice. Only consider the full circuit, where the real challenge is from the foot of Clay Hill, all the way round to the Shell Hairpin- between them the two chicanes are necessary to keep speeds down, but are just plain fiddly. The best bits (IMHO) are: Druids (a real bravery test, just make sure you miss the fist apex!), Lodge (late, late turn-in and watch for the big off-camber exit), Old Hall / Dentons / Cascades (which flow nicely when you get used to them) and Island Bend which is a real ‘dare I / daren’t I take it quicker’ type of corner. It is scary in the dry and absolutely terrifying in the wet (be very, very careful under the trees). There is very little run off in places and speeds are very high, so take some time to learn it properly. If you go off, the damage will probably be major. I have driven it twice now and reckon I’ve learnt very few of its secrets. I will definitely be back, Oulton is the kind of circuit you leave thinking ‘where can I be quicker next time?’

Finally spoke to alex - nice guy:) I'm now booked but he was trying to convince me to go on a novice day on 23rd may first - car will probably only JUST be ready for then and it's more cash.

He got me a bit worried actually, I said it would be my first track day and he recommended going on a novice day first and buying 25 quids worth of instructor for 20mins so that i knew how to drive the car and not wear my tyres out to fast and not crash:wack:

recommendations guys? I don't think I'm a trackday warrior but I'm not a shit driver and I learn fast:nod:

SM

Book the instructor for just before or just after lunch, grab some passenger rides with one of the more experianced trackdayers for some advice on lines and techniques. Enjoy it, dont get flustered when your in traffic & dont try to be a hero and you'll be fine

would i be right in assuming that we are paying £200 now and then getting the disount back at a later time assuming that we have the right amount of people booked on the day?

just wanted to make sure before i give alex a call :) and i had better make sure that ive got enough money in the bank of course :o

I checked this with Alex and he's just taking the names and contact details at the mo - I made the numbers up to 5, he's looking at getting it up to 10 and then taking payment nearer to the track day itself:nod: don't worry I was in the same position:D

SM - Thanks man, so is it realy worth it with the tuition or could I get away with just sitting in someone else's car:D If I was in traffic and unsure TBH i would just back off and let everyone thorugh:nod: It's either 25 quid for an extremely good cause or 25 quid on petrol ya see:nod:

cheers matt

as far as the trackday itself goes then tuition is always a good thing to have, as no matter how good you are theres always room for improvement and if its your first time out there if its a decent instructor then he/she will pick you up on loads of bad habits and give you lots of little hints and tips to help you progress.

im far from a trackday expert as i only started doing them in february this year, but if you want to then i will gladly take you out for a few laps in my car in the morning to help you get a better feel for it all.

my thoughts would be go out for the parade laps then do some laps at your own pace that you feel comfortable with, then go for a ride or rides in other peoples cars and then back in yours up untill lunch time and when your a lot more confident after lunch then go out with the instructor so you can make the most of it.

hope this helped a bit.
james

A full safety briefing will take place prior to any track activity. Please ensure you attend this briefing. Should you arrive too late, please report to a member of the organisers or the Control Tower Supervisor, who will be based in the Control Tower, where arrangements will be made for you to be individually briefed.

On Track

On track we use certain flags to signal to all drivers. When you are on your sighting laps on track please familiarise yourself with the position of the marshal posts. The following are the types of flags you will see:

Waved
Yellow Danger ahead, possibility of an incident or hazard, reduce your speed by 50% (check mirrors first) and no overtaking.

Red Incident has occurred and the session has been stopped. Please instantly reduce speed by 50% (check mirrors first), pull over to the right to allow recovery vehicles to pass and return to the pit lane. NO OVERTAKING

Blue The vehicle behind is trying to overtake – please drive on the right hand side of the Circuit

Yellow &
Red Striped There is a spillage on track or change in the track surface or condition, i.e. oil, mud, debris, etc. Reduce speed and take caution.

Black There is a possible problem with your vehicle, i.e. damaged bodywork, losing fluid, etc. It could also mean that we need to discuss an aspect of your driving. Please return to the pits immediately and report to a marshal.

Chequered This signifies the end of the session, please reduce your speed and return to the pits at the end of your lap. No overtaking is allowed during this lap.

Track Notes

On entering the Circuit please keep to the right hand side and do not move over until the Circuit behind you is clear.
Use the first few laps to warm up your tyres and familiarise yourself with the location of the marshal posts, etc.
Consider other drivers - Leave plenty of space when you overtake other cars.
OVERTAKING is on the LEFT ONLY and on the straight sections as detailed in the drivers briefing, on the day.
Use your mirrors regularly and if you see faster traffic behind you, move over to the right and let the other vehicle(s) pass on the left. It is good etiquette for the driver being overtaken to ‘lift off’ (do not brake) to assist the overtaking vehicle.
TYRE NOISE AND DRIVING STANDARDS. Any driver generating excessive, unnecessary or constant tyre squeal or is deemed to be driving recklessly or in a manner considered to endanger themselves or other track users will be black flagged, removed from the track and given a warning that such driving is inappropriate. If the driver continues to give cause for concern a second black flag will be given to once again remove that driver from the circuit and he/she will be denied further access to the track for the rest of the day. Deliberate and excessive power slides will be dealt with in exactly the same way.
In case of an incident, leave your vehicle and move to a safe position behind the barriers. If you see an incident – do not stop – the circuit staff will deal with it.
Anyone who ignores red flags or the direction of marshals will be asked to leave the Venue – the marshals are there for YOUR SAFETY.
The medical car has a paramedic on board and will join the Circuit via the pit lane. Please be aware that the medical car has the right of way on the circuit and will overtake on the RIGHT so please move over to the LEFT.

Pit Lane Notes

If you are using a garage, please ensure you adhere to all the terms and conditions displayed therein.
The fire lane at the rear of the garages must be kept clear at all times.
Please note the pit lane is strictly one way as is the track. All traffic must travel in a clockwise direction. The pit lane speed limit is 30mph max.
The pit lane must be kept clear between the yellow line and the pit wall to allow emergency vehicle access.
Only people taking part in the current session are allowed in the pit lane.
It is forbidden to sit on the pit wall.
It is forbidden to re-fuel in the pit lane.
It is forbidden to store fuel in the garages or in the pit lane.
It is forbidden to smoke in pit lane or garages.
Children under 16 who are not participating are not allowed in the pit lane or the garages

main point to note is the noise limit is 105db :D

one bit of info i havent yet found out is a price on renting a garage for the day as there will more than likely be work caried out on my car  and id rather not have the joy of doing several exhaust swaps, or turbo hose replacement etc etc in the rain like donington park :( having said that all being well it should be good weather in the middle of june (goes to find large piece of wood to touch :ghey: )

HKS Silent Hi-power - 86 db(A)@4500rpm (full decat)

is this right, is my exhaust really this quiet (taken from this thread - http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=199909)

and when they say a camera must be securely fixed i assume they mean a little more than gaffered to thge dash.

jrtuning
15-05-2006, 22:03
i would of thought it would be louder than that but it does vary according to things like what turbo you have and what the weather is like (colder weather = louder)

edit: and as for camera usually need it to be SECURELY fixed inplace a cheap way to do this is to make a braket to go around one of the headrests

Trust Power Extreme II on my R33 GTS-t was 101 Db at Oulton, had to swap back to my old Nismo exhaust in the pit garages. The Trust was SUPPOSED to be 98 Db, and was brand new. I foresee a market for some proper exhaust systems with at LEAST 3 proper silencers, especially on turbo cars with aftermarket turbos with large A/R turbine housings and cams which = NOISE!!! I am trying another Trust that is claimed in their catalogue to be 93 Db. A rise in 3 Db is a perceieved, at the human ear, to be twice the volume.

SM

You'll be fine with a silent hi-power I would have thought
Yeah, no gaffer, blu-tak or zip-ties for the camera mount.

Hmmm, not so sure... MKIV twin turbo Supras struggle. These noise regs are a nightmare, nothing is more frustrating than having to go home or cock up some Heath Robinson add on to get through a noise test.

SM

Well the Silent Hi-power is one of the quieter exhuasts for the 200SX, 105dB is the same as Elvington. A Nurspec is 110db, just 105db with a bung, that was one of the 2 exhuasts that failed at Elvington earlier this year. The other was a moria single box IIRC, well it was jrtuning's he'll no doubt correct me if I was wrong.

Were all off to Castle Coombe on Sat, limit there is 101dB IIRC, lets see who passes and who fails - they are quite anal on noise at Coombe.

your right i will correct you :p

it was apex silenced frontpipe with motoria straight through mid section and backbox and was 106db i think and managed to get a bung fitted and it brought it down to just below 100db

but ive had a really random and frustrating time with noise regs so far and one of my theorys is inconsistent testing equipment and inconsistent testers.

same front pipe and backbox and changed the mid section to an apex silenced one for next elvington and was now 108db:confused: :annoyed: managed to get it down to 100db again with a bung though

then at donington park same setup as elvington second time round and on the drive buy i was ok for the first session and then got black flagged saying was just below 100db (limit is 98db)

swapped the backbox to an apex one and a bung for that (its a slightly larger tailpipe) went out was ok for 2 sessions then got black flagged again they said i was 101db

found out the mid section had split so borrowed brens as they had been black flagged for noise  and went back out and i thought they had black flagged me but wasnt 100% sure thought it could of been the car infront so next time round came into the pits straight to the end to cue up to go out again they didnt say anything to me so i went straight out again and didnt get black flagged again that day :D

well that was longer than i was anticipating writing :wack:

An old fella who was in the pub after donnington told me that if you put a six inch straight rubber tube onto the end of your exhaust it makes a considerable difference to your exhaust volume. He used to race motorbikes and motorbike and sidecars and is a proper petrol head so I'm guessing he knows what he's talking about. Cant imagine it causing any drop in performance either seeing as its a straight pipe without any restriction unlike a bung:confused: Maybe the standard bit of hose that goes onto the throttle body would do the job for most big tail pipes could be worth a try the next time someone gets blackflagged:nod:

ive gone from having a car that worked perfectly albeit with odd sozed wheels on it :wack: to a car that hasnt moved off my drive since last friday when i thought it best to start doing the 5stud swap at the rear, needless to say it hasnt been going to well so far  but touch wood it will all be finished tomorrow although i did say that last friday, saturday, sunday, monday etc etc :D

on a different note can somebody give me some info regarding what the traffic is like around manchester area at about 7:30 in the morning as it will take about 2hrs15mins to get there from my house and want to take into account getting stuck in rush hour traffic on my way past manchester, was tempted to book a cheapy hotel for the night if it was going to be really bad as i'll be leaving at about 5:30-6 i think which isnt

I managed to fit new pads allround the other day but since getting the car home it hasnt moved as my water pump decided to give up the ghost :(

Fitted a new water pump and dawes device the other night and now need to sort out an airblock :furious:

Its gonna be there but i dont know if i will have time to get the pads properly bedded in as i need to sort out my exhaust at the weekend as its blowing badly ( i think i have lost a couple of bolts off the front pipe).

Other than that its all going swell :D

Need to change the engine, diff and gearbox oil too.

What fueling station is on site and how much is it ?

Chris Wilson
13-06-2006, 16:18
DO NOT rely on the circuits fuel station opening, usually it IS NOT open on trackdays. There is a very large Shell station, with Optimax, about 3 miles up the road, and a smaller station selling ordinary unleaded and diesel, about 1 mile up the road. I haven't noticed the price at the circuits staion, as i only use it if desperate, but as a bottle of water is £1.30.....

andyf
13-06-2006, 16:20
In that case, once you have signed in and got the briefings done, are you free to leave and re-enter the circuit for fuel/food ?

Bayside Blue
13-06-2006, 16:26
They usually give wrist bands out. And put stickers on the cars so I don't see why not :)

I'm uber skint. got another £130+ phone bill to pay... usually £40 thats eating into my petrol money! Teach me to have ho's in different area codes :p

Gonna sell some 360 games to make it up lol. And then buy them again at a later date to get all of the achievements  must get that gamerscore up lol (See sig). It's addictive.

Who is recommended for trackday insurance ?

I have never bothered, worthwhile cover from a decent underwriter is very expensive.

SM
14-06-2006, 12:20
Theres a link to a company in the useful threads/links of this section.
Nicely has used them before.

As a rough estimate a days cover costs 1% of the value of the car with 10% excess.

talk about cutting it fine car is still......not going:eek: :(

starts but idle problem to sort, timing to sort, clutch bleeding(tried twice now to no avail:mad: ), and the biggest of my problems is that the chargespedd wing on the drivers side interferes with the operation of the door:rolleyes:
i have shaved it down to the point that there is now a hole in it and tried moving it but the damn door still catches it. worst comes to worst ill have to go dukes of hazard stylee:D

IF and i mean IF good things happen tonight ill probably do the trackday but anything after tonight and i think it will be leaving not enough time to bed in the engine proper.

S14a would need a good overhaul, steering ball joints (2mm play in passenger side) this would mean tracking would need doing, again, have tonight, tomorrow night and monday night only to sort.

Pissed off? Oh yes. Head up Arse too fecking right.

I've been thinking about the sanity that myself and Matt were experencing when we booked this ..

Matt is taking a car out which has a 30 mile old engine, he wants me to sort his boost, his tyres rub the springs, and he has so much negative camber you'd think his suspension collapsed :D

Myself, I'll have brand new rear discs and pads. So I get all of one day to bed those in. I have a nice, 3inch to 2inch plate stuck over the back of the exhaust which is probably giving me record levels of backpressure. It's also "andy's car", so it's a good assumption that it should never go on a track ever ever - not after my last performance at TraX in the S13 :)

...

Should be fun!

SM, hope it comes together for you somehow mate, it'll be great to see you on the track :)

my cars pretty much ready although im trying to get some different discs to put on the front as i dont think mine are trackworthy, not going to bother fitting the metal disc that goes in the steering column as ive heard lots of people having issues fitting them and dont want to risk it, not going to be able to get rally slicks either so will be on random crap tyres for part of the day and 245 toyos for the rest.

best of luck to everyone else in the obligatory last minute dash to finish their car
