hi folks,

just wondering what type of camera/ mounting you all use for you track days?

im sure there was a thread for this but i cant find it after a lot of searching.

Also getting really into my track days however the only real track Scotland has is Knockhill which is a great track but wouldnt mind venturing to some new circuits

do BaT or the sxoc attend many track days at Croft which is closest, i think theres a few at Elvington as well?

wouldnt mind venturing further down but would be more of a full weekend thing coming from north of the border

I did see one car it Brands the other day with a camcorder mounted to a small plank of wood that had two holes drilled to alow the plank to sit between the headrest and the seat back, to hold the camera between the two front seats. Looked very cheap, but VERY effiective. Dont know whos car it was though:no:

Run by one of the Fiat Coupe Club

I use this sort of mount, but mount it inside the car, on the rear screen, facing forward.

Both borrowed from Petrol

SXOC are often at Elvington, and Croft is possible.
We are planning Oulton park in June if you fancy that. Spa and 'ring in August :D

We have been to Castle Coombe, Snetterton, Goodwood, Brands, Donnington, Rockingham, Cadwell, Oulton, Anglesey

Juz uses a similar sort of mount, but it has less arm bits on it... He uses it with a digital camera (newish canon powershot iirc) - that does 640x480x30fps - with a 2 gig card you can get about 20 mins of footage, at better than tv quality...

I've got an Ultrapod 2 (http://www.fieldandtrek.com/product-Uco-Ultrapod-2-H28.htm) which I'm hoping to strap to something solid (prob roll cage) and use with a digicam...

Yep, I've got a Powershot S80 and I stick it on with one of these (http://gomediamonkey.com/products/cinemount3025.htm)

Thinking about trackday footage, I've got about 5.30mins of incar stuff from Brands this week and nowhere to host it, if anybody is interested and can host it, its a bit big though 566MB :wack:

That's what I'm planning to make. I've got an adjustable mount for a tenner and will "customise" some wood to attach it to :smash:

Feed it to Windows Movie Maker or ffmpeg - that should squish it down a bit :)

thanks folks, like the look of the of the fast films ones. :)

think anyone recommend somewhere for a good quality but cheapish mini-camcorder? looking at ebay but most if not all are unknown makes.

i have a 4mgp Samsung digital camera that can take videos but they arent the best quality and cant hold a lot of film.

Leelee and Mono Phil both use homemade mounts like this, I think it would've been Lee's that you saw at Brands.

It's VERY effective and has a great view of the driver and track ahead.

(And it's free...)

sounds like it could be a good option as well, i take it the track marshals etc are ok with this setup?

i use a headrest mount from here (http://www.b-hague.co.uk/Mounting%20Brackets.htm)

obviously the block of wood option will be cheaper:) .

as far as the marshals are concerned, as long as the mount is stable and secure there shouldn't be an issue. some trackday companies don't like the suction thingies, as things can end in tears if the screen breaks, but most are ok:)

worth remembering, if you go for a headrest mount, then get bitten by the trackday bug and choose proper motorsport seats you've nowhere to put it;)

Jubilee slip it to the cage at that point ;)
Or a bracket like SteA's

I've got acres of space on my server - downloads will be as fast as your connection as the server is a full viper server at an ISP, not a home PC :)

I use a standard Camcorder tripod, strapped down in the back, one leg on the middle of the seat, the other two extended down to the rear footwells. Works well :)

I made one up to mount on my roll cage diagonal. there are a lot of funny angles on it so the base plate is level while it is on the diagonal bar which leans down and back at the same time...

it looks ok too considering I made it:nod:

Other mounts I have used were the stick on the inside of the window type they can be had for about 80 quid for a good un..

I've already hosted it, and made it just 50mb - see Brands thread.

would still like the original file though, since it's the only one I've seen where I'm 95% certain my car is in the footage  (I think it's me being overtaken at about the 1:39 mark :wack: )

Don't bother with the cameras that record to a mini-DVD disc as they don't cope well with vibration. They don't work when mounted on a motorbike tank and even a car could be too much.

YHM - screenshot from original - there is very little quality differance between the 2 formats, just mine is 10% of the file size :p
