View Full Version : Will I ever have a 200 that works?
It all started off last summer (July) I purchased a Nissan 200sx S13 (H reg). It had a cracked manifold and some surface rust but had a newly rebuilt engine a top mount conversion with a T3 and a few other bits (check sig – minus stage 3 parts). I walked away with the car that day for £1300. At the time I thought BARGAIN - little did I know, this was far from the truth
I have always had a feeling in the back of my mind that there was something wrong with this car, but brought it (looking back, I should have walked away!)
It was always VERY laggy off boost (hardly any performance) but strong on boost (running 18psi) so several months passed by, and at least once a month I would have to change my manifold to head gaskets? I think driftingdal has lost count how many times he has taken my turbo/manifold off!
I took the car to Dartford Tuning to put it on the rollers and they measured the timing to 26 Degrees advanced:eek: And also in the process fecked up a few other things too!
Arry kindly offered to check my timing and realised that it was way out! – So took the car to Deek’s place where they took off the cambelt and realised that the bottom pulley had 5-10 degrees play in it!! It had also developed a rather wierd looking woodruff key! - This also explained why the engine was running VERY hot - hence the changing off gaskets every month!
Since then, I have looked over the engine and have realised that I have lots of oil leaks around the seals and the valves are possibily worn (I have had to start the car by using the fuel pump trick too many times!)
So we all have come to the conclusion that the guy who re-built the car didn’t do it properly! So new rebuild is on the cards.
Over the last few months, I have also noticed that the previous owner had sprayed over A LOT of rust on the car… mainly the rear arches. So lets take a breath and think – fecked engine and fecked body work for £1300… not bad! So lots of body work required!
After becoming a member on this board, I have started to read so much (mainly at work ;) ) and started to gain quite a knowledge on the theory side of a 200! (don’t even think about passing me a spanner? – I wouldn’t know what to do with it!) and after browsing a post came up “Free S13” in the members section!
So after discussing this with Deek, we drove up there yesterday and had a quick look at it (it’s a H reg!) and realised that the body work at quick inspection is almost immaculate (a few scruffs here and there, but hardly any rust!) so we towed it back to his and then sat down and worked out what we have to do!
Here is the list!
Rebuild engine (currently in progress!)
Change over LSD to newly required free car
Change over discs and brakes
Change from auto to manual
Change over Clifford alarm
Change over boost/oil gauges
Change over Short Shifter
Change over Alloys
Change tail gate (new one has standard spoiler and is rusty!)
Respray tail gate, front bumper and rear bumper
Change over Earthing kit
Change over Front Strut/Rear Strut
Change over Dash
Rub down any remaining rust and treat
Install engine
Run in engine
Im sure that I have missed a few bits out. But hopefully after all of this! I may have a decent running S13!
But big thanks has to go to Driftingdal, Arry and Deek. If it wasnt for these guys, I would have sold/throw away my 200 a LONG time ago! :notworthy
I will get some pics of the new car and my current car tomorrow and post them up.
Bruv I will help you in anyway I can:nod:
You Deserve to experience the happier side of the 200 ownership:nod:
The best way to do it is do it properly and the right way!!!!

Well done to you tim for staying true to the s13 as you nearly did'nt:thumbs:
GET THAT CAR IN MY WORKSHOP:wack:

Is that the abbreviated version of this little story then Tim? :D
The engine was actually getting so hot not only because of the severely retarded ignition timing but also because the inlet cam was 2 teeth out
And no worries mate, anytime

yep, that was the only way mate, otherwise I would be still typing as we speak a day later!:wack:
You not left yet? :smash:
quick update on this.
We pulled the engine out of the blue car and upon quick inspection it looked fine, the valves were seated nicely, and the block had no scores, pistons were fine as were rings... so I was a happy man (for about 5 mins!) upon closer inspection, the bores have edged 5mm at the top and the crankshaft is fecked! Deek managed to find what looked like a turbo thrust bearing in my sump! - but my current turbo is in VERY good condition? - explain that one?
It wasnt terrible news as we had kinda imagined it would turn out like this.. :(
It looks like rebuilding the blue car isnt going to happen as there is to much work involved :( - so Deek is planning on rebuilding the engine from the grey car and it looks like everything has been unmolested from this car which is a good thing :)
Went back to Deeks Yesterday, as Arry and Deek were already working getting the engine out of the grey car (new car!)me, driftingdal and kewies proceeded to rip out parts from the blue car, manual swap was well on its way... so pedals were taken out of blue car ready for installation into grey car. My autogauge (see for sale section) was removed as were my pillar mounted gauges.
So the engine is now (as we speak) being rebuilt and should hopefully be ready to put in the grey car in a month.
All I am waiting for now is a duplicate V5 document for the grey car - then its FULL STEAM AHEAD!
Many Thanks goes to Driftingdal, Kewies, Deek and Arry for all of their help on this day!
More to come ;)

A few of us have found stuff like that. It's most likely from a previous turbo that let go
I remember giving you PM advice over this car. Feel a bit guilty now, as I did say it looked like a good deal at the time :o

Arry, just as an example, how many engines did you have in your moded 13. Baba mentioned it, and I could not beleive it?

found exactly the same thing on mine a couple of weeks ago when Danny and I where trying to sort a timing problem. so now rebuild time.

11 in total fella. Well, 11 various "builds". Used 4 different cranks at various points.

That what I call 'true to a S13'
lol... well not really, I just entrusted it to muppets to fix the damn thing. Nowadays I just fix other people's instead :wack:
MAJOR DEJA VU.... mad!
From Arry's post about 11 engines, I recognise the text?  :D
UPDATE WITH PICS
The V5 arrived saturday morning, so now I am officially the owner of 2 S13's :)
The engine came out of the blue car
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/1460/blueenginebay4oz.th.jpg (http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blueenginebay4oz.jpg)
and does anyone notice the rather nice custom moving of the ABS unit at the back? I had a top mount fitted, and this is how it was achieved.
Have a closer look. (No bracket either!!)
http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/2488/blueabs9bu.th.jpg (http://img70.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blueabs9bu.jpg)
Took the propshaft off (rather good condition too :) )
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9578/bluepropshaft0mw.th.jpg (http://img138.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bluepropshaft0mw.jpg)
And then looked at the front cross member... what front cross member was my words!
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/7132/bluefrontcrossmember9ug.th.jpg (http://img234.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bluefrontcrossmember9ug.jpg)
(you cant really see how good this car is - more pics to come :) )
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/706/greycar2wb.th.jpg (http://img139.imageshack.us/my.php?image=greycar2wb.jpg)
So Deek has to rebuild the engine from the grey car, as the engine from the blue car is fecked. The idea is to take the top end from the blue car (actually its in pretty good nick!) and rebuild the bottom end from the grey car and end up having a decent car out of the two
Oh and a present turned up on Friday too :D

It all sounds scarily similar to what I've got to look forward too... :indiff: :D 2 x S13's, 3 x CA18's, and not a running car between them :wack:
Good luck, looking well so far  :)

**UPDATE WITH PICS**
Today has been fun
Went around Driftingdal's workshop and decided to refurb my alloys.
The wheels were COVERED in brake dust, so cleaned them up a bit using the trusted method of wet n dry  (click on pic to get a bigger view)
This is a pic before ANY work

It certainly takes ALOT longer than you think... getting rid of brake dust is a bastard
Arry and Deek were taking my bottom end of my previous car (blue car) and I managed to get a couple of pics of the big ends
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1340/bigends6kc.th.jpg (http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bigends6kc.jpg)

Also meet Cosy and Troy  top blokes  ... and had a look at the wonderful Steve@EMS's supposed rebuilt engine :whip: :annoyed:
Also saw Cosy's project  :D :wack:
Just remembered the funniest thing about yesterday. One of my front shocks.
It was so furbed that you could turn the shock upside down and the shock would fall out :wack: :D
yeah, was rather comical that one :wack:
Those pics dont really show just how bad those mains and ends were :hurl:

Sorry tim, should have been on this thread some time ago  As you're adding pics too I'll try and get some of the bits I'm getting done during 'office hours' for ya ;)

*****UPDATE*****
So far, we have ordered most of the parts... just waiting on a few bits left
So I attempted to have a crack at painting the engine bay
I used hammered black
This was my first attempt - I thought it came up quite nicely... the pics dont really do the paint work justice :)
So the car should be running at the end of this month... which means I will miss JAE... but I wouldnt want to run the car driving to JAE  - incase something was to go wrong :whip:
Not bad fella. One little job out of the way
Sorry couldn't make it round yesterday
No worries mate :)
Have a look if you get the chance... I left it when it was nearly dry.. so have yet to see the final outcome.
Not much left now

Need anything off my For Sale thread?
update..
Arry or Deek
You're keen aint ya?
Engine's finished bar a couple of pipes which are still in cleaning tank, and I'm just waiting for the paint to harden on the rocker covers before putting them on.
Walbro has been fitted, clutch assembly fitted, engine bay loom and ancillaries tidied up after a certain Mr Simpson got handy with the paint brush but never re-assembled anything ;)
Welding of front cross member should commence today. There's at least 2 patches needed on the pass side floorpan which hopefully will get done at the same time. If not it'll have to go for it's MOT with a few battle scars :whip:
Basically - today's the day Timbo - it's engine in time

I can appreciate that ALOT of hard work has gone into this
Sorry about the painting thing... I took off all the ancillaries and I couldnt remember where they went :wack:
Top work fellas :)
Hmm. Bit of a stumbling block in that your cossie T3 downpipe is just a little long for the standard mani, having been fabricated for a top mount  and the core of your turbo needs rotating but is seized.
Deek and I were working on it till gone nightfall last night :(

mammoth rebuild :notworthy
It's touch and go mate - again I know  but there's just been so much shit jumping out at us over the past few days. For starters, your oil return caught against the engine mount when the gearbox was pushed up :wack:
Prop/Gearbox/shortshifter all on there now. Engine loom half complete - the other half needs attacking due to being auto.
Drained your volvo cooler out - some of the shit in there :hurl:
Front cross member now welded on and suspension components attached. Front bumper ready to go back on last minute.
S14 seats will be fitted
nice one lads
about time a tim? :D
what have you done about the downpipe?
what have you done about the downpipe?
Said fcuk it and just dragging the downpipe along the floor - it'll soon wear into fit
what have you done about the downpipe?
I've ended up cutting the old one and welding it back together again, nice job too even if i do say so myself :D
Finally got round to uploading all the pics to photobucket, a selection will follow soon...
for now here's the 'proof of the pudding' ;)
Click for vid! (http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n129/movitech/?action=view¤t=Picture189.flv)
sound quality doesn't do it justice, the engine sounds lurverly, another top quality build completed
Lookins/sounding good, hope all this work works out for you, I know where you are coming from getting a rag bag to super nova (not the bloody vauxhall type) keep up the good work
Nice one deek
shame his away at the min!
Did it pass the mot??
I doubt it's gone for the MOT yet, it was only running as of yesterday
Quick update.
Ordered a RPS MAX Street clutch and Apex FMIC..
Just got to get the car sorted when Im back from all these courses
Well done Arry and Deek for the all the hard work they have done :)

I'm going round there tonight to pee in your new intercooler :D
No.... the only thing that you did was come round and get drunk and start saying that my engine is about to fall apart... also your ingenious solutions for the bumper too :smash:
She RUNS :D
a few problems tho :(
Failed the MOT on quite a few things... emissions, sills, rust, headlamps to low, too short nuts for wheels among other things...
CO was 5.64% :(
Main problem... the timing wont sit still  - we timed it to 15deg and as deek was about to tighen the cas, it jumped to 40deg  - it wont stay still? any ideas anyone?
Deek assumes there is an air leak somewhere? which might be the reason why my idle is 1400-1500rpm when warm.
Driftingdal has sorted 7/10 of the problems... now its down to deek to find the solution why my engine is running very rich and my timing seems to have a mind of its own :annoyed:
Cheers for all your help guys... and thanks to arry for shooting me with an air gun for a fair while.... trust me ... it almost ended up in his ass!
Arry! - IN YO ASS!!!!!
Note: If I install an ecotek valve? do you think this will solve my overfuelling issue at idle at present? (im only interesting in getting past the MOT at this time!)
If the ecotek is effectively a vacuum leak, then surely this may work
Stick an adjustable FPR on there and wind the fuel pressure right down ;)
Or fix the problem :)

The ECU is supposed to change the timing at different revs (all part of the mapping). That's why it has to be at 850rpm-ish when you're setting the CAS . Check the air-regulator is doing its job properly (that's what gives you a high idle at cold). Take it off, put 12V on it and watch the hole close up over a few minutes (if it's working properly).
She's alive bwahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :wack:
Nice one Tim
Cheers for your replies. A bit more info.
The car needed attention on both sills to pass the MOT.
When we had a look, the previous owner (or whoever reparied the car) basically stuck a metal plate and fillered over it WITHOUT welding it in
Did an ECU check, two fault codes, temp sensor and knock sensor - replaced both of these and after a while, the ecu shows no faults
Still having problems with the timing... we have tried numerous cas's, but the timing will NOT sit still... no matter what you do!
Going to check the air regulator today.
MOT re-test today :)
How did you get on with the retest Timbo?
What have you done with the exhaust? I assume you're going for roughly 300bhp so wouldn't it be better to have a 3" exhaust pipe going through to what ever back box?

It PASSED :D :D  wooooohooooo... finally I have a working 200  - but there are still some problems.
When I originally put my car in for its MOT, my CO2 emissions were 5.6%, I put an ecotek valve on and my emissions were .027% :wack:
I need to get some longer front studs for the wheels as apparently they are too short  - anyone got some lying around?;)
Running in the engine now... I sure hope its going to be worth all the hassle!!
re: exhaust, nah... im leaving it at 2.5in... this rebuild has worn me down a bit re: money... so the 3" will have to come at a later date... but hopefully using 2.5 will decrease lag and create that almighty whish sound on boost  300..... p'ah... im aiming for a bit more than that ;)
Sideways Danny

you don't need a 3 inch system for 300bhp
regarding emissions, have a look at the lambda sensor, CO usually sits around 6% when they go bad

I havent got a lambda sensor? its a pre-facelift?
The shell that I sold to Dal had longer studs on it, has he still got them?
So you're going for over 300bhp with standard rods and pistons?

Potentionally yes... i will see how the car performs at certain PSI levels... and since having a custom chip and a special engine rebuild... i dont see any reason as to why I cant aim for 325+
UPDATE WITH PICS!!!!!
After speaking with Deek... He has already uploaded LOTS of pics of my rebuild...
Have a look at these

Yep... my engine has had a special rebuild where it requires only the best larger in order to work efficently :wack:
EDIT - also noted that the pics are in the wrong order:rolleyes: The valves that are hosted towards the end of the uploaded pics are NOT the valves that have gone in my engine :annoyed: - I just cant host pics properly :wack:

I must admit, most of the hard graph has to go to Deek and Arry... they spent alot of time and effort rebuilding the engine and swapping the car over.. and my mate Driftingdal who was always there helping a hand when needed

After seeing those pics i'd have such a problem not trying to do a 'petrol' on an s13. Can't stand seeing tin worm, it'd start out as a quick cleanup and changing of bumpers to a full strip and resto. :wack:
So have you relocated your battery?
And what's this secret conversion?
nope.... havent relocated the battery, got a decent one from Dal (you know where he works ;)
not for me to say :p

and Running in has FINISHED
ive completed my run in procedure so am able to up the boost slightly...
My idea is to slowly up the boost as time goes by...
I have been running on standard actuator boost which equates to 7psi with my turbo setup :)
Even on standard boost, it spools lovely
I upped the boost to 0.7 bar which equates to roughly 11-12psi... and she is noticeable ALOT faster and easier to drive (more torque throughout the rev range!)
I really cant wait til I up the boost to "desired level" its going to be MENTAL :D
I am really happy with my 200 for once:D
I would like to thank, Deek and Arry for putting up with my stupid questions during the last 9 months (and a future apology for any further stupid quesitons :wack: )
I would like to also thanks Driftingdal for his on-going support and "free" advice :wack:
also for all the body work that he has done as well!
Without you guys, this never could happen

orange one looks familiar for some reason.... not jacks old one is it ?
orange one looks familiar for some reason.... not jacks old one is it ?
nah, at the time it was a mate of mines Greg... Kewies on this board... but he does frequent here much since his last adventure...
Jacks old one was brought off another mate of mine (morph - not on this board yet :) )
Quick update on how things are going :)
oil/oil filter has been changed twice..
I noticed that the cabin kept filling with smoke whenever I corned hard. - after a bit of messing around, we found that the ABS pump was leaking... and also resulted in my fluid running out and I ended up loosing brakes doing 40mph on a dual carrage way  - luckily I managed to fill the fluid while keeping a decent braking system intact... - sourced another ABS pump and now the system works properly :wack: - however, the smoke is still there :( - rocker cover gasket leak (only a small leak - but needs to be fixed!)
Some of you may have read my thread in the S13 Tech regarding running lean. we have changed the spark plugs, coil packs, and fuel filter... still no joy......
Went to Deeks today so he could test the AFR with me driving up and down the dual carrage way... we found out that the AFR is 9-10s under hard accerelation... when it should be around the 12-13s:eek: - which means its over fuelling - which is obviously better than running lean, on cruise and idle its spot on at 14.7
Also managed to correctly adjust my TPS, as it was slightly out - even tho all readouts where correct = dodgy TPS  - replaced it, and now the hesitation has moved up the rev range to 5500 rather than 5000 than before....
Also noticed that the rear subframe bushes are knocking quite badly :( - time for replacing them - may as well do the whole lot while im at it too
So overall... its going pretty good... and the performance of the car only running 0.7 bar is amazing... I cant quite get over it:thumbs:
Special thanks goes to Deek and Dal for all their hard work over the last month! Cheers guys
and look what turned up for xmas :D :D

The car is very quick at the minute, but only in 2nd/3rd, it starts to hesitate in 4th and 5th gear, we suspect ECU, so that will get changed asap
I had the privelage of having a ride in Tims car last saturday, and it was fast as hell!:D
