View Full Version : I might have to sell the 200. :(

As some of you know, I'm on the verge of moving away from Swindon, and going back to live at 'home', or Oldham, oop North.

So, I've started ringing around to get some insurance quotes, I was planning on keeping schtum about my moving until renewal time (February.), so have been getting quotes for when renewal time pops up..

Only turns out the place I've nigh on confirmed I'm going to live (with my mum :D ) is one of the highest private car insurance risk areas in the bloody country.. :(

Phoned HIC, who are renowned for good quotes for mod'd cars, by some of the people on the forum, so I thought "well, I could do a lot worse!.."

So I gave them a ring, and said.. Feb 03, I'll be 21, have 1 years NCB on the car, driving almost 2 years, etc.. OL2 post code..

Get this;

£6900 TPFT
£7800 FC

I could.. cry?

It's looking like I may have to sell up, come February. Which will not only leave me car-less, but well over my head in debt with loans etc, which paid for the car in the first place, with nothing to show for it but poor credit history.

****.

:o

Gutted! :(

Thats the highest quote I've ever heard of, probably about double the value of the car!

Try getting some more quotes, failing that...... cry!

D
24-09-2002, 13:02
I had alower quote of about £4k from my current insurers, whom I shall never use again, but I was expect HIC to better it, in all honesty.

I could probably sell the bits off the car, exhaust, and bits, etc. Return it to standard as best as possible.

I doubt I'd even get £2000 for the car, the suspension is wallowy at best (and was/is next on the 'to-do' list.) and it needs approx; £600/700 worth of bodyshop work (scratches, dents, stonechips, and where I took the paint off the corner of the nose on a stonewall :o )

So it just isn't viable to sell.

If I can't get any reasonable quotes, it'll be a case of seeing if my mum can get it insured with me as a named driver.

But if it comes to the worst, I'll just have to take it off the road and keep it somewhere as safe as I can. Maybe continue to work on it (an oppotunity to become a star amateur mechanic perhaps..) and just continue to fix things, like the suspension, et al. Until eventually I can afford to insure it.

Argh, just as I was beginning to find little encouragement about life again, I've worked out that I am probably capable of three jobs, a day job, an evening job, and a few night shifts at a petrol station or the like. But this just, throws.. things in the air.

B O L L O C K S.

Using your mum's insurance is a good idea, it doesn't help build up the no claims bonus though.

Unless you buy a banger (1.0L or similar) to mantain your bonus, failing that if your mum has a car, you insure that and she can insure your car. Then you could both be name drivers?

Having three jobs sounds a bit extreme!

D
24-09-2002, 13:32
If you are to have the things you want, this is a life of extremes :)

Mum drives a 1.4 Rover 25. Which she's already said she won't let me near :D

Even if I were to have a 1.0 banger, I reckon it'd cost me similar to what I'm paying for the SX down here in the South.

Did I mention the £6900 quote was for me at 21 yrs old, with 1 yrs NCB?..

Ah, ****ing ****buckets.

Do you feel better now?

D

A little, yep. They tried to quote £8k FC first, though.

It's still unaffordable, though. So the future is still SX-less.

24-09-2002, 14:08
This is one of the only subjects that makes me feel better about being old. That kind of money is just silly, car insurance must be one of the only services that commercial companies provide that you are required to have by law. They have you over a barrel.
you have my sympathies mate.

Each year you pay a fortune for their service, and if you don't use the service the insurance company has your money in return for very little work. If you use the service you have paid for then they charge you twice by increasing your premium the following year:mad:

Get a mortgage for the car and live in it;)

D
24-09-2002, 14:14
Latest news; will have to find somewhere else to keep the car when it's off the road from February, as apparently mum has just had a new fence put up in the back yard.

Heh, How much does my life rock huh? :)

FYI, I'm paying just short of £2300 TPFT now. If I was to remain at the same address for renewal, my premium would be nearer £1100 TPFT.

I'd lie my arse off and say I still lived somewhere I didn't if I thought it'd get me anywhere. But knowing my considerable piss-poor luck, something would happen to the car whilst it was up North, I'd be found out, etc, etc. Not worth it, and I'm not a big fan of lying too much :)

Sigh.

isn't it just cheaper to insure the car just plain third party?.. if it's only worth £2K, at worst you lost the £2K, and it's gonna be a lot cheaper that £3500 even if it was nicked!!

Then invest some time in installing isolation switches all over the car to stop the bas**ds nicking it.

D
24-09-2002, 14:27
I'm moving back to Oldham, home of fire bombs and it would appear, one hell of a car theft rate.

The price I have to pay for "going home", to try and start some form of new life, to try and eek a little happiness out of this stream of ****ty hands I seem to be dealt, is to give up my car for a year, then it's going to have to mean just that.

I'll get mum to ring up her insurance company and see if they'd insure it in her name with me as a named driver. It's looking like my last chance.

Am I right in thinking my one years NCB will remain valid for.. is it 6 years? Orrrr...?

Jezz_S13

I got my insurance with AXA, give them a go or possibly A-quote. The B**tards out there will try and screw as much cash out of you as poss due to your age and the car. Has your car got a Cat 1 or Tracker? It could bring it down a bit, maybe even hire a garage. Failing that, as you said remove the mods. Personally, I`d go down the mum as named driver route. Worked for me when I had a Puma. Failing all else, buy a ****ter and save like crazy. When you`ve got a bit older and a handfull of no claims you can go and blow your cash on something really cool. I`m 26 and am paying about 1400 on my 99v S14A but I`ve got 5 yrs no-claims.
Good luck mate.;)

D

Got driving license = 15/06/01
Bought 200SX = 22/02/02

Aged 20.

I'll be 21, with 1yrs NCB come renewal time.

Car has various, possibly fatal-wound-inducing security devices... ;) (and a CAT2 imobiliser... )

As far as I'd go with bull****ting the insurers, would be to say it was unmodified. Or at best, that the standard exhaust fell to bits (which it did do..) and I replaced it with a stainless single pipe because it was cheaper...

(the fact it's a Blitz NUR Spec, we'll neglect to mention..)

Going to see if they'll quote for the car in my mums name, with me as a named driver, now. Back shortly!..

The guy I spoke to sussed me completely. "This car's for yourself isn't it, Sir?" Busssssted ;)

Well, it's crunchtiiiiime..

Basically, if my mother is using her full NCB on the Rover (which she is.) she (I..) can't use the NCB on the 200SX.

So, if she uses 0 NCB on the 200SX, the premium is = £1761.90.

However, if she transfers her NCB from the Rover to the 200, the premium = £750.40

Hmm, somehow, I can't see her going for it :(

Well, surprisingly enough, she didn't shout when I told her of the NCB thingy ;)

What I want to know now, is... which company's offer 2nd car rates, using the same NCB? i.e. Where you insure 2 cars, and are able to use your full NCB for both?..

Many thanks.

Firebond don't use NCB on their policies (which may mean you lose yours?) - and you could try limited mileage?

ALSO I certainly respect your decision not just to drive around uninsured - good man!

Cheers, Phil

D
24-09-2002, 15:29
Phil, I will only get my 1 years NCB come the 22nd of February (How overenthusiastic am I for foreplanning huh? :D )

Limited mileage.. uhm.. have done.. almost 15,000 miles in 7 months...

Greenlight wouldn't even quote. "How old are you sir?" "20, but I'd like a quote for when I'm 21, as a guideline". "You have to be 21, Sir" "I know, but a guideline would be nice"..

He wouldn't even quote, but gave me a rough idea of "£2500ish".. then tried to give me the usual "It's because of your age, and the car you drive" routine. Bleh.

Stuuuueyyyyy, but... are you (or will be come renewal time!) 21, 1yrs NCB, living in "Beirut without the sunshine"? ;)

Will give Flux a go in the morning, I'm goin' to bed most likely. Wake up, and this'll have been some awful nightmare, yaaaaaaaaay. (Childish optimism.. this.. is.. what.. you have reduced me to, Mr.. SX... ngyargh...)

D, for god sake be imaginative...

Pay someone you know on the board a couple hundred quid to say that you live at theirs in the week or something, get it insured for the SW or somewhere low rated and then if your car gets nicked say that you were visiting your mam. You keep your car, and save a few grand.

The mailing address idea is promising. I think students often do something along those lines... Only snag would be if in a claim they asked for proof of address. Don't know how much of a possibility that is. Then you could always get creative with a bank statement and a colour photocopier... Dodgy I know. Also don't know how much info the insurers can get from the DVLA computers.

you'd need your licence to show the address you were proposing insurance from.... so the using someone elses address is out of the q unless you wana send your licence back to dvla - its actually an offence to drive without a current licence showing your correct address.

how modified is your motor D? i might be able to do something on it if its "reasonably" standard - cant promise anything tho!

i might well be able to swindle your mum some intro bonus (shh!) so she doesnt have to transfer the ncd from her rover.

Someone may have suggested this already, (I can't be arsed reading it all again).

Why not insure yourself on a scrabbly shopping trolley, re-register your 200 in somebody else's name, then you're covered third-party. If you want to be totally kosher, get the 200 insured in the "owner's" name as well. Doesn't matter where they live as long as it's cheap. Of course, if it gets nicked, they may not be too keen on making a claim....

D, my suggestion here would be dependant on u having close relatives, i.e. sisters or brothers.

My mother lives in Glasgow, is a high rated crime zone.
My sister lives in Livingston (25 miles away) its a low rated crime zone.
I stay with my sister...... obviuosly.......
All my insurance, tax and log stuff is registered in Livingston.

Now if i was through at my mothers and my car was stolen... so what, am i not allowed to visit my own mother?

And i havent changed my bank etc as its just too much hassle, better to pick up the mail from my mothers house once a week.

Are u following my drift mate?

Failing that, do a seatch of Turbo pete in the insurance section, he posted something about classic insurance..... seemed worth looking at if Arry cant sort u out.

Good luck mate

I tried Firebond Classic Insurance, with limited 5k miles. It came back with my CURRENT insurers, and still at nigh on three grand. :(

I'm going to live with my mother, Kev. Only relatives in the area is my aunt, who is in a M24 post code. I'll give it a bash today, I reckon. She's got a nice garage, too. :)

(Probably where the car would end up, if all else fails, incidentally!)

D
25-09-2002, 10:54
Just tried HIC again, but with keeping the car at my aunts house.. It's getting better..

£2800 TPFT.

Unbelievable how there is a £4k deficit for quite literally, ten minutes down the road!!!

Going to try that Footman James place again, whilst waiting for Arry to call back, think I confused the poor lass on the phone.. :D

D
25-09-2002, 11:40
Tescos, Insured in my name at M24, on top of a hill, garaged..

£2059 TPFT.

Betterrrrrrr...

Dilema is now, do I keep the car at my aunts, still have it insured in my name, and work on that 2nd years NCB.

Or, give the car to my mother, and become a named driver, miss out on a years NCB for the sake of a few hundred quid.

Hmm.

It's all so expensive :(

I'm very tempted to keep it off the road, just work my arse off on it, use it as a drift/track car. And occasionally... take it out for 3am drives and whisper sweet nothings to it...

But I'd miss it too muuuchhh..

Happy Christmas mother, have a car! B'ah!.. :(

There is no way that ur losing 3rd place in the unlucky 2***** owners club mate.:( :p :D

And id defo limit the mileage to 5000 or under.

Never tried it personally but im sure u could "modify" ur speedo if u needed to.............. im sure someone like steve c would be able to help u out with that, or give me a couple of weeks and ill let u know.

Also its something i didnt think to mention on the flux thread, but when i made a claim in january, the actual insurers wanted £100 excess, and af wanted £350 on top of that:eek:
Funnily enough i just replied directly too the letter from the insurance company therefor not going through af for the pay out, and only lost £100.

Af really are crooks!!!

Ps. D give arthur brooke and son a call, they were most reasnable until this year when af beat them by £100.

How would a 10 month policy be cheaper than a 12 month policy?

just a thought - when does your mums rover come up for renewal? was thinkin of using her NCD on the sx with you as a named driver and then swindling her an "intro bonus" on the rover to replace the NCD thats been swapped over - if that makes any sense!!

also, having words with a few ppl to see if i can pull in some favours.... At least weve got until feb to look at it right?!

Not unfortunately, mate..

If I can finish this year, then I've got my -30% for 1 or 2 years. Another 5% is nothing, really.. which means, it makes insuring it under mums name slightly viable again. Ish.

Building up your NCB is a must, once I had two years worth I bought my 200 and was paying 1300TPFT. On my 22nd bday i will have 4 years and my insurance will 550TPFT. Quite a difference. But, I would never pay over 2000 for insurance on a car probably worth less than that. U should have got a cheap runabout to build up your no claims originally, then got summat better.

oh well thats goodish then...

the intro discount im talking about is only applicable to drivers over 25... which is why i cant use an intro on the policy with you on it - which is a bit of a sh*t.

thats why id like to use the NCD from the rover and then apply the intro discount to that to replace it - with any luck you mums premium wont go up and we can get you a good deal on the sx

like i say - i will keep pluggin away for ya mate
