Yes mate! it was a Spitfire engine, and as far as i know it went to Germany! but then i herd something about it going to the states!
the truth is it's probaly rotting in someones barn!
I think there was a tv prog on a while ago that featured this car. Can't remember many details though.
A bloke who lives opposite me was going to fit the Spitfire engine (I think this is the same as is in the car you're thinking of) into a herse - 27litre V12... I think RR did two versions too. NA and supercharged. I think the NA version was about 800bhp and the supercharged one was well over 1000bhp...
Theres one in the Science museum in london.

No I read an article in a car mag recently and it was having a rebuild.
Think it was a classic car mag.

I think there are 2 breeds of the RR Merlin, one is 1000 crank and hte other 2000 @ crank. i might be wrong.
Think they needed i on the spit though cos the wings weren't up to much and therefore needed to be dragged everywhere as opposed to fly.
I was watching some tractor pulling stuff on the motors channel the other day and they had ths beast running 2 merlins running alcohol, awesome.
On of them had 5 helicoper turbojets!!!
Lunatics.
I remember that. I think his argument over the RR grill, was that it had a RR engine, so why not? I agree though, it was a nutta mod
Yes yes! It was a big white thing?
He got summoned to court about it, so showed up IN the car :D Caused quite a racuous, top bloke.
Also it did 200mph on a runaway at not many revs? Top Gear or similar program did a bit on it I think, showing exactly how you start the thing up (lots of switches for things to pressurise and stuff!)
Is this what you are talking about???.....

This it was rebuilt with what look like double Mk1 Cortina reaar lights! With those Mag wheels it's pure 70s!

750bhp at only 2,500 rpm, quite a bit of power

I believe that spitfires used a supercharged version of the engine, rated at 1200BHP and 1/3 bar boost. If they got in the sh1t, then they could overboost the engine to about 1750 Bhp and 1 1/3 bar boost, but the engine had to be rebuilt after landing
Ok going off topic now - why could the earlier skylines er I mean spitfires not DIVE? why did they have to bank / half barrel roll then CLIMB to achieve a dive? bit of a design error??
Was this before or after the merlin engines? I mean.. that would be a hell of a pisser. Enemy plane constantly dives so there you are barrel rolling all over the place. bafiasd
There were two around at the time, the other one was a blue convertible but I can't remember the guy's name who built it.
I remember seeing them both at Custom Car show at Alexandra Palace in the late 70's.
Mmmmmm, 27 litres + S13, Hope Matt hasn't seen this thread :D

The Merlin engine used in the Spitfire and Hurricane (amongst others) had an updraft carburettor arrangement and when the plane was dived by pushing the nose forward the negative G would cause fuel starvation and cause the engine to stutter and in the worst cases conk out completely !! The Messerschmitt 109 and most other german fighters had fuel injection and therefore could stand negative G without any difficulties. A Spitfire/Hurricane pilot would have to roll the plane onto its back to dive quickly...........british engineering at its best, eh ?
