View Full Version : New tyres fall to bits on track?
Trying to decide what tyres to chuck on for the Brands Hatch trackday at the moment and I seem to be going round in circles now! Spending £150 per tyre for R888/D01Js etc isn't really an option.
I see that the Falken 451 is recommended a couple of times and my local tyre place will fit them for £65 which is a bit of a bargain (235/45/17).
Toyos T1s are little bit more.
My worry is that they will be brand new so will have 8mm of tread and willl overheat/fall to bits as the tread moves around.
Any comments?

Do you think that was becuase they had lots of tread or becuase they are T1Rs?

I used T1S's at Brands last year and while they did get hot (it was a really hot day in July) they didn't melt or ball up at all. Get T1R's if you're worried, they don't seem to be quite as soft as T1S's.
Have younot got a set of wheels with illegal tread? these are ideal.
If going for new tyres the toyo's stand up well to the heat.
I have found T1Ss to be excellent on track.
Cheers for the replies!

Unfortunatley not :(
Were your Toyos new Bren?
Been surfing the net and it seems new tyres aren't recommended because the tread moves around, and breaks off/melts. Ofcourse this may not apply to the Toyos...... :)
We have new new Toyos with no problems :)

Cracking, just what I was hoping to hear
mine were about 1000 miles old, melted, covered in little rubber balls

From searching around it appears that T1Rs aren't up to as much track abuse as T1s. So I assume that's the explanation behind that one :)

That is a bargain
Bubble's got them on his R34 GT-T, can't remember if they're front or rear but they seemed to do a good job around Snetterton, considering they have to deal with 400+bhp
I was considering them to replace the shite Bridgestone Potenzas I have now :indiff:

Which wear more quickly, front or rear tyres on a standard S14? (yes i know its rwd but havent tracked mine yet so dont know if it has a tendency to understeer before oversteer)

Front tyres wear more on track due to the cornering, braking etc. I found I rarely span up the rears at all.
Depending on your driving style I suppose. :)
Also I'm on standard shocks/spring so I guess more of the weight is transmitted to the front on braking.

Seem to have pretty good feedback on the subaru forum.
These are cheap for D01Js, but still out of my budget really (remember to add VAT)

Phoned them up and they only have 16 left. It's the end of line stock because a newer model is out now :) . SO be quick if you want them.
I'll be looking to kill a set of michelin pilot sports so i can get some more suitable tyre sizes for other events this year...

Interesting info
Measured my 160 track mile + 100 road mile FK451s against some brand new ones and it seems I've only taken 0.5mm off them so far evenly accross the tread  They still have 7mm in the centre to the new tyres 7.5mm. I was expecting more like 2mm wear :)
