View Full Version : RAF Marham trackday - 23rd April - 1 or 2 places available

Okay, I've offered this to lots of members I already know, but for one reason or another, most can't make it. So, it's on offer to any members who can:

Trackday at RAF Marham (postcode PE33 9NP) on the 23rd April and I've been allowed a few extra places for SXOC'ers
Basic rundown:
Cost £60
6 sessions of 20-25mins.
4 mile circuit, similar to last year (V high speed) but with some revisions (?)
Need a helmet (obviously) and a hand-held fire extinguisher in the passenger footwell.

I would need security details for anyone who wants to come along.

The only problem is that it's not guaranteed, I need names & details ASAP but if it's over-subscribed by RAF peeps, you may be the first to go :(
I don't think that'll happen though :)
So, if you're definitely up for it, please post below.
Cheers, Raz

Might be able to sort something.
Why don't you just take a slot on track though?
Haven't seen you around, fancy a meet sometime?

I'm tempted but have never done a trackday, thought I might just come and watch?

A meet would be good - I have been meaning to attend the norwich one as I am half way between Kings Lynn and Fakenham, A KL meet would be good though. Any other Kings Lynn guys about - I haven't seen many.

It would be very good as your first trackday, hooooge runoff arears, nothing really to hit, very wide so plenty of room for overtaking. It'll be a good way tifn what needs uprating on your car as well

I don't know of any other SXOC'ers in Lynn, but know a few at Marham and a mate in Sutton Bridge.

hi guys, i will be attending this event through another forum that i use (http://www.clubarnage.com, so i will look out for the other sx's and the like - i will be driving my s12 silvia.
See you there then :)

Details for all those attending:

Please read carefully!

RAF MARHAM DRIVING DAYS - 22 and 23 APRIL 2006
General
On behalf of the Station Commander, Group Captain Greg Bagwell, a warm welcome to RAF Marham. A history of RAF Marham, its current day-to-day life and its operations can be found at http://www.rafmarham.co.uk/front.htm. RAF Marham is approximately 7 miles South East of King’s Lynn in Norfolk. For those using Satellite Navigation the postcode is PE33 9NP; the enclosed maps also indicate the route to and on the Station to get to the event. All visitors without a permanent RAF Marham pass should use the secondary access gates marked and not the main gate – this is closer to the main roads and will significantly reduce the time taken to get to a local garage for those who need to refuel during the event.

You must bring means of identification with you, for yourself and any passengers (your driving licence or passport would be ideal). Access to the Station will be delayed considerably and may be refused without personal identification. After you have turned into the main gate, please pull into the lay-by on the right (before you reach the vehicle checkpoint barriers) and walk to the Guard Room to book on to the Station. RAF Marham personnel will check your personal identification and vehicle details; you will receive a vehicle pass to display in your car and personal passes which must be carried on you. They will also provide you with any further necessary information and directions; the route to the event will also be signposted on the Station. Depending on the situation, please be prepared to have your car searched on entry.

The Driving Day is a non-competitive event, similar to the track days held at a motor racing circuit or other similar venue. The event is defined as motor/leisure and is for drivers of all road and race cars. Give yourself plenty of time to arrive, sign on (when you will be issued with any stickers or wristbands pertinent to the day) relax and attend the driver’s briefing - It is mandatory to attend the drivers briefing - if you miss it for any reason, whilst every effort will be made to get you out on the circuit as soon as possible, you will have to wait until one of the organising staff can brief you before being allowed to participate.

For 22 April, sessions will alternate between cars and motorbikes – mixed sessions will not be run. For 23 April, sessions will be run for cars only.
Drivers/Riders/Passengers

Car drivers must wear a helmet and clothing that covers the arms and legs, at all times when on the track; race suits, flameproof clothing and race boots are of course acceptable; for first-time participants, unless you are using race-specific clothing, please avoid synthetic fabrics, wear thin-soled shoes and consider using a thin pair of gloves. Bike riders must wear a helmet and either one-piece, or fully zipped leathers – part-zipped leathers are not permitted.
· If participants wish to share a vehicle, second drivers/riders are not charged for separately; however, second drivers/riders must be nominated before the event and it is compulsory for them to sign on and attend the driver’s briefing.
· Drivers/riders must be in possession of a current, full UK driving licence and present it at signing on.
· Passengers are permitted in cars, but must be 16 years old or over, and will be required to sign on. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that their passenger is signed on and adheres to the same rules as the driver for clothing and helmets. The main participant is responsible for the behaviour of all people within their party.
· Bring clothes to keep warm - when outside the car, the airfield is an open place and seldom warm if there is a wind.
· Food and drinks (hot and cold) will be available for purchase at the event.

razza987
19-04-2006, 18:10
Cars/Bikes
Cars or bikes must be either be either currently road legal or entered in an RAC MSA recognised race series.
Unless fitted with a plumbed-in system, a hand-held fire extinguisher must be carried securely inside the car. Fire extinguishers are not required for bikes. The driver/rider is fully responsible for ensuring the safe condition of the vehicle at all times.

Hand-held cameras (still or video) are not permitted in cars or bikes on the circuit. Any cameras carried must be securely and properly mounted inside the car or on the bike.
It has not been possible to make fuel available at the event location; however, if not bringing additional fuel with you, nearby garages are located within 15 minutes drive to the north, west and east of RAF Marham. Vehicles with small tanks and/or high consumption levels may need to fill up during the day; access to and/from RAF Marham during the event between sessions will be possible (for those who attended the event last year, access arrangements to the Station have been amended to reduce the transit time by at least 20 minutes to that experienced previously!).
Basic car or bike preparation before the event is not only sensible but also prudent for the safety of yourself and others:
· Check tyres for correct pressure and adequate tread depth.
· Make sure that brake pads have plenty of friction material left on them and that your brake fluid is fresh. New pads need bedding in to avoid them simply glazing over.
· Check fuel, oil, coolant and other fluid levels, and bring spare fluids to top up during the day.
· Check for wear and tear on steering and suspension bushes, bearings and other key driveline components.
· Ensure that any cooling fans fitted work effectively
Event Control/Assembly Area
The Assembly Area (i.e. pits/paddock) has plentiful hardstanding for parking vehicles and any support equipment. The speed limit in the area is 10mph at all times. Any breach of this will result in exclusion from the event.
The Assembly Area is located inside the track and access to it is across the track; consequently, access will be strictly controlled at all times and only allowed between sessions. Event Control will be located next to the Assembly Area, as will the food, drink and toilet facilities.
Sessions/Timings
The event will be run with controlled access sessions. Each session will be of up to 30 minutes duration. Drivers may be divided into groups according to vehicle type and/or car performance. Bikes and cars will not run at the same time. The first session of each group will include a familiarisation convoy run. The planned timings below are based on full capacity attendance on both days; they may change and enable more sessions for participants if there are fewer vehicles participating.

Sunday 23 April 2006

Signing on from 0730
Drivers Briefing - 0830

0900, 1000, 1100 - Open track sessions
0930, 1030, 1130 - Open track sessions

1200 - 1300 Lunch Break

Drivers Briefing – 1245 - all drivers.

1300, 1400, 1500 - Open track sessions
1330, 1430, 1530 - Open track sessions

1600 Track closed.

Depending on participating numbers and circumstances, consideration will be given aggregate groups in the afternoon on 23 April 2006 to form a single group running on an “open pit lane”basis.
Environmental
No specific noise restrictions apply; however, if vehicle is deemed to be unacceptable or specific complaints are made, then the vehicle will be excluded from the event until appropriate noise reduction is made.
Equipment to deal with fuel and oil spillages will be available in the Assembly Area any such spillages must be dealt with promptly and reported to the Assembly Area marshal. Marshals will deal with spillages on track, but drivers are to ensure that any such spillages are reported on return to the Assembly Area.
Driving

For the initial session of each group, the group will carry out a familiarisation lap behind a lead car. The purpose of the sighting lap is to show drivers/riders the layout of the track by driving/riding behind the lead car; it is not to demonstrate speeds, braking points or lines through corners, but simply the layout of the track.

Remember that you will be driving/riding on an airfield, which differs in a number of ways from a normal race circuit:
· Appropriate sections of the track will be coned to ensure that the correct route is followed.
· There is no Armco or tyre walls (but run-off areas are generous and grassed)
· Be aware that the track is on wide tarmac runways and taxiways, and is relatively featureless, so take care in judging your speed and braking points and distances until acclimatised.
· The track has mixed surfaces - some areas are high friction tarmac, some are concrete and there are various areas with runway markings - the tyre wear and, importantly, the grip level on each is different!
· Avoid driving over airfield lights that mark the runway and taxiways - they are hard, do not deflect and are expensive to replace; moreover, they will throw your vehicle off line.

The Driving Days are non-competitive for insurance reason, therefore, comparative lap timing is prohibited; such use will result in exclusion.

The Station Kart Club will set up a track adjacent to the Assembly Area for people to experience karting. In addition, the RAF Marham Gliding Club is hoping (subject to weather and serviceability) to offer Air Experience Flights in their gliders at a very reasonable cost (£30 for two flights and a month’s membership).

Photographers from RAF Marham will be recording the event and a CD of photographs will be available after the event.
Insurance

It is very unlikely that your normal road insurance policy will cover you for the event. The event insurance will cover you for damage to MOD property and third party liability to other people not participating. Therefore, check with your insurance company and either through them or one of the specialist companies, consider if you wish to take out track day cover for your vehicle. Also you may wish to consider personal accident insurance; track day accidents are very rare, but if you decide to take your car or bike on to a track, you must be aware that you are accepting the risk to the car, yourself and any passenger. You will be required to sign an indemnity when you sign on at the event, as will any second drivers and passengers.
Driving after the Event
Do a thorough check of your vehicle (tyres, fluid levels, wheel/hub security before you leave. Please remember one thing above all else when the event has finished and you depart from the Assembly area after a hopefully very enjoyable day - switch off track day mode - you are about to get back onto public roads where the Highway Code and Traffic Regulations apply, that are policed, and two-way traffic operates.
FINALLY
Please also remember – the event is designed to provide fun, enjoyment and challenge in a safe environment; please play your part in keeping those to the fore - safely.

Just got back from Marham after a day driving the MR2, it was absolutely fantastic :D Track is much better than last year, with some interesting twisty bits. We had probably the slowest car there, but still managed to take some scalps, including a 1600 Westfield  Jag X-Type, S12 Silvia ;) It was also the first time driving on track for my girlfriend, Emma. She was a total star, driving really agressively (for a girl :p ) and making the most of the 2 sessions she had. Doesn't mean I'll let her drive the 200 though ;)
See you guys tomorrow, bring a rain coat :indiff:

I think she enjoyed it today...

Well what a fantastic day that was:thumbs:

Plenty of tracktime to be had and what a fast track it was as well, with nearly 150 down the back straight (read runway:D) then hard on the brakes to scrub off some speed and scream it through the cones in 4th:eek: then hard on the brakes and into a cone complex - fantastic:D

I was surprised at how well the stage 1 S14a went, nothing got past me on the whole day and I was quicker than everyone I came across through the twisty bits and the only car I couldn't get past was a stripped out and caged BMW. Raz heard him say "I managed to keep that Red Skyline behind me" lol:clap:

The standard of driving by everyone was excellent and I can't wait for the next one:thumbs:

Thanks Raz:notworthy

it was a great event - shame i couldnt get out for any of the sessions today - due to killing off my front tyres yesterday! and my mate killing his FTO:(
what was most annoying was the fact that i went to 'kwik'fit to get some new ones fitted, i asked how long itd take to fit - 1-1 1/4 hours was the response! after an hours walk round kings lynn i returned only to find it about to be done! muppets:mad: :annoyed: then charged me £140 (for their cheapest tyres) for the privelidge:mad:
by the time we got back it was 1ish and my mates car had been picked up by green flag so i had to go to pick him up from eurospec in guildford!

ah well - the time i had on track i had a great time n even got some amateur drifting in round the complex;)

razza987

The standard of driving by everyone was excellent and I can't wait for the next one:thumbs:

Were we at the same track? :p I think some people had a bit of an attitude in their driving, leaving you no room to overtake. Plenty of spinners, although it was very greasy and that does include myself, being a tw@t and using the same brake marker I'd been using yesterday in the MR2, except I was doing 150 instead of 110  :smash: :annoyed: First time I've been backwards at over 100mph :indiff: Lesson learnt...

Had quite a few technical problems in the morning, with boost hoses blowing off and my actuator rod falling off again  All good in the afternoon though, with the boost turned down a bit :) Quite funny really, Bubble and I were put in the Fast group, rather than Really Fast, but when it went Open Pit Lane in the afternoon, there wasn't much that was quicker :D

Weather was a little bit miserable, but never properly rained, just a little light drizzle. Windscreen wipers are crap when you're flat out :wack:

Glad you enjoyed the day Bubble, I know Ant did as well. Mark & Andy, hope you guys can make the next one, "should" be one in October

The 200’s done really well, Bubble was bloody quick but to be honest in the first session when razza987 came past me I think he was going quicker!! One of my mates crashed his R6 race bike, but was ok, so took out someone else's GSXR1000 in the afternoon  Don't know who was mad enough to lend it to him!
