View Full Version : just got broadband!
ordered broadband last week, and all the stuff arrived today took 5 mins to set up ( if that! ) and its fantastic, the best connection i ever got on narrowband was 46667kbs, now its 576000 brilliant, im gonna suck the world dry now ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!:D
im at work at 21:30, i know im gonna be late!!
i've tried getting b/b but i havent got a BT line, which narrows the choice of providers.... to Blueyonder.
I've sent them 3 enquiry forms, to which they are supposed to respond within 24 hours, and still nothing. The customer service worries me deeply!

ADSL or cable?
(checked my NTL Sunday pm (busy time) 627000kbs :p )
NTL customer service can be crap - but so far the *actual* service provided has been excellent. Dunno what Blueyonder are like - though play a bit on their Couterstrike servers :)
Cheers, Phil
cable - telewest...
AFAIK Blueyonder is the only one available to me.....
Is the performance of broadband better irrespective of how crap and old your computer/modem is?
(If you haven't guessed my computer/modem are both crap and old :( )
jeff
the connection is faster but if ur processor cant chuck the page around fast enough you wont benefit from it... your modem will be replaced anyway mate so no need to worry bout that.
I would say as long as you've got a 400+ processor b/b would be fine

you get a new modem, the old in-built is not used, my computer isnt very good either and it is alot better/faster irrespective of your computer, mpegs that took 15mins to d/load took about 30 secs!!!, tis fan-dabby-dozi !!!!.
ive got the freeserve one so its ADSL me thinks, cant get cable up here in t' norf
thats ur processor speed.... for example you see Pentium 4 pc's being advertised nowadays with 2000
if you turn ur pc on and watch the start up it will say what processor you have - ie mine says AMD Athlon 850
Ok, thanks. I'll have a look at what mine says when I get in. Probably say 104 or something though
Me Dad has just got broadband and has a much better computer than me. Connection is easily as quick (if not quicker) than mine is at work, so it looks pretty impressive from what I've seen :)
Is it expensive?
connection is quick? broadband remains connected constantly...
b/b is about £35 per month and about £50-£100 to get set up depending which provider. One other thing to consider is that if you've only got an old pc you may not have a compatable Network card, so this will add to the start up costs.
But yeah its really impressive. I send movies/piccies to a friend with b/b and he downloads em in about a quarter of the time it takes me to upload em!
Er, not connection then, obviously used the wrong term, I mean like connecting to sites and downloading stuff. What ever that's called is what I meant :o
What's a network card and how do you know if it's old?
On second thoughts, you may have to completely re-educate me so don't worry too much about answering if you don't want to enter into a conversation similar to teaching a squirrel to use a calculator :o
you'd have to look through your system devices - which, depending on what operating system ur using ie windows 95-98, i think is in the "control panel", although dont quote me on it!
i've got xp and im still not used to it - couldnt find it if i tried!

Telewest (now Blueyonder) cable broadband, I had it installed about a year ago and service is excellent in terms of consistent high speeds, only one drop out of service when an electricity sub station blew up, apparently.
Be persistant in writing and by telephone, at least the calls to them are free!
I got the fat pipe installed about 3 weeks ago, and I love it. I'm sucking the world dry, Bill Gates would have a heart attack.
It cost about £30 a month plus line rental. ADSL by the way.
£20 for line activation.
£10 for a filter.
£30 for a PCI adapter.
I had ISDN before, and this is still 10 times faster than single channel, it's lurvely :)
Thats enough of my boasting. , for now ;)

You don't have to have a Network card for it to work. I wouldn't go for the package that BT provide, as it is a USB adapter and I hate USB. I know various people who just bin that piece of equipment, as it is not always stable when connected for longer periods of time. It draws like 500mA
I think the best thing to do is get line activation, buy your own filter and adapter (whether that be a router or PCI) and just pay for subscription as per normal.
It doesnt matter what computer you have got, but if you are just after a basic setup, a chep PCI adapter for around £40 will do the trick, and be more than stable.
I heard a rumour that NTL are going to up the bandwidth for broadband users from 512k to 600k. Thats an extra 11Kb/s available, yeah baby.
12th Sept...apparently.
As i work for Telewest i get to speak to loads of people about broadband and the general consensus is its really good especially the Blueyonder, but now you can also order them in 1MB,2MB flavors and if your feeling flush how does a 1GB connection sound?
What upload speeds do cable offer?
When accessing the Internet it doesnt really matter what speed your computer runs.
Personally I dont think their would be much difference between a Pentium II 266 processor and broad band up to a Pentium 4 with Broad Band.
The only bit the processor does is load the programs. (ie Internet Explorer or Netscape etc) once you are on-line, it totally depends on what connection you have got.
Other options have to be taken into account as well, such as grahpics card. probably a minor statement, but having a better graphics card will also display the screen faster.
However if I am wrong:o then please correct me:)
Cheers
Right then,
For residential customers:
Blueyonder=
512 download 256 upload
1mb down load 256 upload
For Business customers
512 download 256 upload
1mb download 256 upload
2mb download 512 upload
all dependant on which package u go for.

Thats better than NTL at:
512 down, 128 up
1mb down, 256 up
I only have the 512 :( so far :)
I would rather have 512 down/256 up than 600 down/128 up IYSWIM...
But then I am considering running a private Counterstrike server with a spare machine :)
My NTL costs 25 quid a month (was 25 installed, inc. cable modem!), and my latest NIC only cost 9... this 'PCI adapter' mentioned - is a modem/NIC combined?
Not that it matters cos cable connects through a DX2 based router into my (home) 3 machine LAN. Soon to be replaced by Pentium based router for the game server...
I have big electricity bills and a noisy spare room ;)
Anybody tried watercooling their chips?
Cheers, Phil

Watercooled, looked at this a while ago when i was building my home machine... i can forward you some URL's which supply kits. But the thought of having water in my machine put me off, a couple of mates have had bad experiancies with watercooled systems.
Try using Dela fans based system, if have the following set up.
P111 933, with 3x80mm delta fans used for intaking air (2 use piping to direct air onto the processor and the other fills cold air around the cards). On the exhast side of things I run one 60 Delta on a ThermoEngine heatsink with one 80mm above and one 80mm next to the processor to extract the hot air. I've also got one of those System Exhaust Blower which clears the hot air from around the cards, oh yes and my 2gig of ram is cover with Thermaltake A1165 Active Memory Cooler.
It's over clocked to 1.5 Ghz from 933 and guess what it runs at between 12 and 15 deg's C, and 18 de's under heavy load. After loads of case cutting it kick's the s*** out of most P4 based systems.
There is a big downside thou it sounds like a 747 on take off!!!!

Soz for the poor grammer, i really shouldn't try typing fast! Why watercooling... i have thought about this a number of times and keep coming back with the same idea 'AIR CONDITIONING', maybe using a unit of somthing like a vecta. Using 4 80mm deltas to suck air though the air con unit via possibly 240mm fleable piping then blowing the cold air directly though the hinksink fins useing 80mm flexy piping from the fans. Any thoughts?

If you go on their website you can enter your postcode and find out. Can't get NTL in my area yet as the council won't let them install it unless they do the whole town or summat:(

Skidus: That sounds like bollox - NTL are Statutory Undertakers (like BT, Gas, Electricity, etc) and have a lot of rights to go pretty much where they like, unless the Local Authority have very specific reasons for not letting them.
Sroberts: Getting a bit O/T but...
Getting a mates old board and chip to make a new machine for playing online. This leaves a 400 K6-2 lying about (plus various other bits).
And a load of mates and colleagues have organised a few LAN parties, but it's pretty inconvenient (and costly hiring roms). Now half of them have cable, and my router can port-forward/pinhole...
so i hatched a plan involving using the 400 as a games server - people without cable come around and connect to (16 port) hub + 3 or 4 connect via cable.
IE *Local* server for *local* people :D
But the 400 is a touch slow so thought about overclocking both server and new machine. And I have a huge unused petrol tank from a Jaguar based kit-limo - hence the idea.
My garage is under my house and half underground so could mount pump and tank there (stays 5 to 20 degrees all year round). Also thought about just ducting air from garage instead. Or mounting router and server in garage and accessing remotely via network (VNC, PCAnywhere etc)
Still not decided as you can see... :)
Sorry for the long post.
Cheers, Phil

I'm doing it soon, 'cos my pc is deafening me. 4 x 120x38mm case fans, 2 x 80mm case fans, enermax psu fans plus a nice noisy delta on the cpu

Go for a DangerDen cooling block, dunno what radiator (still have not made a decision) and get an Eheim 1250 pump from an aquatics centre :)

yeah i know it's a bit OTT bit my computer is deafening me!
so, anyone notice their NTL bandwidth gone up?
been speedtesting mine and it seems to confirm the hike in bandwidth :)
Bandwidth test (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/speed.html)
still perfectly happy with my DSL :)

No, Skidus is correct. Cable areas are franchised. NTL don't cover all areas for home use.
NTL - No service available message (http://www.ntl.com/locales/gb/en/home/broadband/availability/telewest.asp)
Business use is a nother matter, if you can't get cable in that area, they will install a leased line to a local pop.

Anyone lnow what the 50:1 contention actually means. It dont mean sh1t unless you know what you're contending over. Its 2Mbit line.:(
As soon as broadbans gets really popular, it can actually get SLOWER than Dialup:( (40kbit)
Wont happen for a while, though.
