View Full Version : anybody near bristol want to come and listen to my engine?
ive just started up the crash damaged 14a that soem of you may know im fixing, to be confronted by a HORRIBLE noise :annoyed:
im hoping its something simple, but im being realistic as the car has no service history with it so it could be bad
all levels look good and the noise dissappears and re-appears but it makes it sound like a diesel (i am almost 100% sure its not gaskets as its from inside the block)
so is there anybody out ther that would come and have a listen to help diagnose the noise?
cheers guys :(

ello marc sorry to hear this after your rebuild, do you think its a bad vvt rattle? try putting it in gear and rev the car past 1500rpm and see if it goes away
it does go away when you rev it, but i dont think its that........... sounds more serious :(

vvt rattle does sound nasty mate, have you checked the spray bars ?
no i havent had it apart yet, been working on the bodywork, which is almost done now with the help of some bailer straps borrowed from my mates with a farm and my dads pug
how come you mentioned about the spraybars? would they cause a noise?

well if there blocked due to no servicing then no oil to top of engine
ahh bugger, which would mean what could be damaged?
Which could mean fecked big ends etc etc :(

the cams get fubard and drop metal into the bottom end ...........but on using the search button most peoples noise gets worse with revving where as yours goes away is that right ?
i really hope it doesnt need an engine rebuild!
that will teach me for buying a car that is crashed!
ahh well hopefully its not anything serious.
if anybody wants to come and have a listn in return for a pint they would be more than welcome!!!
yes the noise gets quieter on revving. its got my dad totally confused as its a really bad noise that changes it loudness and dissappears on revving.

click the search button and type in vvt rattle marc theres loads of posts a lot of them have your symptoms
VVT goes away when the car is warm.
Does it do it in neutral? If so then it isn't VVT
 it does it out of gear. shall i try driving it for 10 yards or so and see if that helps, im so worried i will do more damage!
lol, ok i wont, what do i do?!?!?!
I assume you've checked all the fluids already so it's probably time to take the cam cover off and look at the spray bars
dad said when he took the oil cover off that there was plenty of oil moving in there, but it was over pressurising?
Over pressurising  eh? in what way?
If you take the oil cap off when the car is running you should be able to see 2 jets of oil going down the cam lobe that you can see

i dont know of anything else diesel sounding apart from vvt or gaskets :(
Can you take a recording of the noise and post it up? That'd help
i can ring you and hold the phone to the engine?
go for it :) (give me a minute to find my phone)
lo, give me five to find the keys ;)
Marc, probably the first thing is actually to empty the sump of all the oil and have a look through it for any metal
I just found this :( it's not looking good
ike Arry says, something akin to a ball bearing smacking off the top of the engine when you hold the revs around 2500rpm is worth listening for (other things may cause this, but don't risk it anyway). A loud knock at idle is a later sign of impending engine death too.
what kind of "engine death"?
full rebuild (depending how early on you catch it I guess)
if you do a search for "engine knock of death" you'll get the idea :(
You might want to PM John Bennet it's his post in this (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=193614&highlight=engine+knock+death) thread

does it sound that bad??????:(
its on the top of the engine though, not the bottom, where the bottom ends would be
Yep, it sounds horrendous :(
The noise is coming from #1 cylinder only
would a garage/mechanic know what the noise it straight away or will he need to take the head off aswell? btw your close to your 2k post rob

mmmm it has shot up since hes been laid up with the ankle   ...........what mileage is the car on marc ?
its on 54007 miles, but im not overly convinced that its 100% true...........
I would have thought if you could get a decent recording someone on this forum would be able to tell you
You won't know exactly what needs replacing till you had the engine apart I think
I'm pretty sure its fecked though
