View Full Version : Which tyres for Sprinting (rules)
Tyres MUST be on the list below, which would you choose for sprint racing.
Must be sticky from the off - no warm up, sprints lasts 50 seconds.
Cost no object - very little wear over the season.
Wear no issue - see above
Assume dry races only.
They will have to be standard (S14) size  as I cant afford some wide wheels

I'd say Falken FK451 will be a good bet. I used to have them, and my only complaints were wear and wet grip.
Really, you think they will be the VERY BEST on that list?
I would have thought maybe the P-Zero Rosso's - manufacturers must put them on cars they send for "Evo" tests for a reason ;)
I'll have a closer look at them though  thanks.

A008s but I bet you can't get them in your size...
The kumho 712s were always popular in sprint classes but again they are out of production although some are still available through ebay I think the KU31s are the replacement.
PM CNHSS1 and see what Craig recommends - he has the most sprint experience of people I know on here

A friend had the P-Zero Rossos on his Subaru Impreza P1. They were the same size as on an S14. I remember that the car was very quick thorugh the twisties.
Thanks guys :D
29th April is when I need to be sorted for
i cant get the whole list to come up on my computer, only avons and bridgestones for some reason. I use List 1Bs but most of our guys that run 1As, use Yoko AVSs, Goodyear eagle F1s or Bridgestones. S-02s are better than S-03s especially when worn down or shaved down to about 3-4mm tread but 02s arent easily available. Toyo T1 Rs and Ss get good reviews too. Dont know anyone using Falkens or Kumhos in 1A though (Kumho V70s are AWESOME in List 1B though!)
Odd that you cant see the whole list, but your shortlist of what people use is very helpful - thankyou. Obviously after a coupel of events I'll be able to see what the winners are running ;) but really want to buy a set to use just for sprints and keep them seperate for the whole year.
Pity DJ01's are in list 1B which I cant use, as I have a set at home.
You seem very clued up - if you have any advice for a newbee to sprinting I'm very keen to hear from people who actually sprint :D

I don't do sprinting but I've wanted to try Kuhmo Ecsta MXs for some time now, they look like they'd be good in the dry but probably useless in the wet :wack:

where are you based? Im west midlands but that said we get to sprints and hillclimbs all over uk (bloody north weald in essex 1st round:rolleyes: ).
Sprinting is fun and deceptively difficult. Ignore those who say that you dont get long enough on track:sleep: , its a major rush going flat out on cold tyres, brakes etc a few feet from trees and ditches:eek: .
Id suggest going along to a meeting to watch and just see the lye of the land. Ask lots of questions and join a club and/or championship.
The rules may seem at odds to general tuning scene, but they do allow all sorts of cars to compete on a relatively even basis (fwd/rwd/4wd, N/A and turbo'd)
List 1B tyres (D01Js etc) are much better than std road rubber, but its all relative. All the other cars in your class are on std 1A rubber so it doesnt really matter. Interestingly, if it rains 1A rubbered cars go 10-15% slower, whereas 1B and slick shod cars go 30-40% slower so its sometimes embarrasing to get beaten by less extreme cars.
Jez Horsham sprints an S13 so he can probably help on setup etc, but i will help anyway i can mate:thumbs:
I'm based in Lancs, and doing some rounds of the Northern speed championships, thread here

I think there will be 2-5 SXOCers having a go at a coupel of rounds, and hopefully more next year all going well.
I cant make round 1 (I'll be at donnington), hopefully entering round 2, then the day after go and watch round 3 and see what I can learn.
Its just for fun, not bothered about winning :wack: and not bothered that the car may not be competative in class.
If your doing any in the north I would appreciate a PM, and come and have a chat/shadow during the day to see what tips I can pick up. I'm looking at learning this year to weigh up next years options/costs ect
I've chatted to Jez a little, and will also see if I can get to one of Longton's evening club-nights - thats also the club I plan to join
1st event for me is 29th April  got license, need helmet and suit (half sorted, bren is about to post about a group buy).
I'm a complete noob at this, and will absorb any info you have time to give, youre obviously clued up :D
Out of interest what do you race class? car? championship? and do you do well :D ?
Edit - I guess this :D Scimitar SS1 (track)
our championship actually attends three sisters and aintree etc, but im not down to do them this season (at the moment anyway) as our championship runs a 'bogey' time system which means you hav to beat the class record to score maximum points. Unfortunately i hold the class records at oth those cicuits, so its a struggle to beat th time by more than a couple of tenths, so im aiming to do mainly events where i feel i can beat the bogey by a sizeable chunk of time (the more you beat the time by, the lower points the other contenders actually score).
If i end up doing any of them i will defo drop you a PM. In fact nearer the time, remind me as some of my mates will be racing there and i will tell em to look out for you and they will help you too.
I do the Scimitar Speed Championship(combo of sprintsand hillclimbs) which goes as far north as Harewood, down to Goodwood, and from Hethel (Lotus factory test track) to Loton Park and Llandow in the west. Like most championships we sub-divide into diferent classes from teh MSA although based on theirs. This is due to the first scimitars being built in the 60s thru to the early 90s. I run in Super Modified which is essentially MSA Modified Production but must be road legal and use 1B.
couldnt possibly say if im any good or not:thumbs:

Sounds like a lot of fun :D

This is what I used for the sprint I entered at RAF lossiemouth (now use KU31s on road and still have 712s for track/sprint), feel free to speak to me on MSN (not during work hours) if you want more details Kev :) I'd go for the Kumho Ecsta MX's for dedicated sprint tyres given the choice, they provide 25-50% more grip than 712 IIRC I've got the details on my PC at home.
Dunc.

Kumho V70s are AWESOME in List 1B though!
Well not one I was suspecting to come up, but as they are also quite cheap (Cheaper than F1's & S02's (btw S02's are available on mytyres.co.uk) )I think I may well give them a shot :D

Kev, when will you give in and get some 300z UK rims :smash:
There are some on Ebay right now, and more over at the 300 board
Do it :)
Maybe, I have fancied a jap set 225 all round, but 245 is OTT for sure.
Funds ect ... SteA has/had a set of jap ones FS but I resisted.

Butuz has some Jap ones, used to be mine :smash:
If you got some UK ones you could use a 225 on the rear, stretched look is
i got Continental ContiSport Contacts atm and i dont find them to be an able tyre wet or dry (on my company car - 225/40/18) and have had the Goodrich Profile G on the 200 in a standard size and they were pretty poor in the dry.

You git, your costing me money, I'd ignored the stretching option so far. AND as they are for the S13 Lennie has some spacers for me when I'm down next week - or at least I hope he has :smash:
