View Full Version : Cyclists!!!

If it wasn't for my ABS kicking in there would have been a blood stained bumper all because the twat decided it be good to...
a) ride on the pavement
b) cross the road without even stopping at the T-junction
...and then he stops and looks at me as if I've done something wrong
And if the government has it's way it WILL be your fault, whatever. We'll all be paying extra on our insurance so these sandle wearing, hippy freeloaders can ride their bikes with impunity

probably true :( however in a conflict between a car and a bicycle i'd rather be inside the car, irrespective of who's right and wrong :D
btw you should have shouted "read your f*cking highway code!"
Mr ninja, my window was already down cos the sun was shining....and yes some obscenities were exchanged!! :D
Yep we could end up like Holland where it's the drivers fault if he hits a bike even if it's not:eek:
Go figure...
I think the proposed law puts the onus on the driver to prove it wasn't his fault instead of the pedestrian/cyclist having to prove it was, so if it's not your fault you should be ok. The idea of the law is to get drivers to watch out for pedestrians and cyclists so as not to be taken by surprise if they do something 'unusual'
As a cyclist myself, I admit to occasional bending of the highway code, but I do get annoyed with other cyclists who put themselves and others in danger. This is because they are stupid, not because they are cyclists. One of the great things about bikes is that they are easy to ride, unfortunately this also means anyone can ride one...
Now bus drivers - don't get me started on bus drivers - and they put the cycle lane and the bus lane together? what were they thinking?

popular move with some????????
last time i rode a bike i got splattered by a car - the driver got out, looked at me rolling around on the floor and, in infinite wisdom, says
"now you've got no lights on this bike - you shouldnt be on the road - you dont want me to call the police do you?"
now, under certain circumstances, this would have made sense - apart from the fact that it was like midday in the middle of summer! you can imagine some of the choice words i exchanged after that one.
but yes i agree wholeheartedly that all cyclists should be beaten with their own chains and locked to a lampost overnight by their ickle shackle locks
Only problem with Holland is that it's full of blonde boys and girls and you can't tell them apart until the 'femidoms' start growing breasts:eek:

On the contrary .. if you idiot drivers that think you own the road, stopped doing 90mph around country roads and obersed the speed limits
Whilst you are at it try reading the highwaycode .. yes you remember the little book you had when you were a spotty greasy teenager and read up about passing cylists, maybe try giving them a little room, we do get blown around by wind you know, you should be passing us with plenty of room so we can avoid the rock in the road when you are 3mm to the right of us ........ Oh not forgetting the times when you overtake and then turn left into a road stright infront of us.
Oh the joys of putting a bar end through the passenger window when that happens. :D :D

Natural selection?
I've BEEN hit by 3 cyclists (two at once on one occasion!). Every time, it was not my fault, but due to a cyclist breaking the laws of the road and then trying to blame a motorist.

Oh come on !! ...... you cant start a story like that but not tell us what happened ... thats just cruel ....... I got as far as 2 at once on one occation ...... fully expecting an amusing story of 2 cylists rolling around the floor in agony ...... and no follow up.
please continue ..... how did 2 cyclists manage to hit you ?
I give cyclists plenty of room when I overtake, which is only common sense.
However stupid cyclists cannot start to complain until they...
a) Stop riding side by side on a country lane and wonder why I'm nearly knocking one of them off when there is only 10mm of clearence on my side.
b) Start reading the Highway code as most seem to be ignorent of Traffic Lights, Stop lines, etc etc blah blah blah
c) Start using some signals... when I learn't to ride my bicycle I was taught hand signals for turning left/right and others besides.
(how many cyclists actually bother to look let alone signal??? and when they do manage its a simple hand off the bar not really pointing in any particular direction).
d) Start paying road tax... before any of you cyclists start moaning about this crap about not causing any damage to roads etc then bollox cause I ride a motorbike which causes none and I still have to pay for that.
I don't want anyone getting the idea that I'm anti cyclist either (I'm not) as I do ride one too. However I do believe in give and take and that doesn't mean I give and the cyclist takes the pi$$.
Rant over now :D
Well I dont think I should pay road tax ...... per square meter I am sure Pirrelli rubber is more expensive than tarmac.
and I am putting way more rubber down on the road than I am rubbing the tarmac off ... so if anything I should get a rebate ! :D

Wan't driving a BMW by any chance? ;)

funnily enough yeah it was:rolleyes:
i came away with a sprained wrist (played havoc with me luv life;) ), a couple of cuts bruises and grazes over my back and a knackered front wheel. he ended up with a 2 foot long scrape mark all the way across his bumper - caused by my nice metal pedal catching it - at least there's justice in the world!

Here in Switzerland automobilists should leave a spare place on the right (in UK would be left) side for Cyclists but as soon as they see a traffic jam this rule is dropped by many leaving me doing a dangerous slalom track down the road:mad:

I wrote a car off when in on my (pedal) bike. That was fun :)
I am both a driver and cyclist. I used to travel to work by bike, but gave up 'cos it's just too damn dangerous.
I obeyed the Highway Code on the whole (signaling, not weaving through tiny gaps/blind spots, plenty of lights/reflectors, etc), and the vast majority of incidents or near misses were the fault of the motorist. Just either not paying enough attention (focusing only on car size objects), or complete lack of thought as to what the cyclist might do or 'need'.
A lot of it seems to come down to a lack of respectv - almost a class thing - "you are on a bike cos you must not be able to afford a car, and are therefore demand less respect than me" type attitude. Similar for somebody in a cheap/small/knackered car to some extent.
As a motorist just watch the way other people treat cyclists. I have had words on cyclists behalf on occasion...
BUT the way a lot of cyclists ride gets me just as mad. Used to even more so when I was one of them, and got tared with the same brush.
I have caused much amusement to motorists when berating a fellow cyclist 'cos they were riding like a twat. It causes less respect for cyclists - and I might have been the next one the driver came across.
I don't agree that cyclists should pay road tax - but do think anybody body riding in public should be made to have 3rd party insurance. I had the equivelent of fully comp. when I wrote some poor lads Mini off.
Rant over. Cheers, Phil
There are alot of For's and Against's arguments for cyclists.
I was also a cyclist in my college days. Cycling is Very Dangerous when you are in the country (as I was) you have cars coming round corners quickly (remebering that the speed limit is 60 unless stated) and I have been clipped by a few cars and then been shouted out because I am on a bike:mad:
Like everyone says if there are lanes that cyclists can use, then no problem, but while cyclists are on the roads with cars there will always be accidents.
The Main problem is many cyclists think that the cars should watch out for them also alot of drivers have no respect for cyclists which again leads to accidents.
Cyclists should have their own lanes, (which to be fair have been created) and should be more of them.
You see what is happening, you cannot win or lose in an argument/conversation about cyclists and motorists. Instead why dont we all go out ditch the bike and buy a 200:D :D its difficult to get oversteer on a push bike without falling off:D :D :D
The end. (finally got there:o )
Here in Stoke we have one of the most amusing cycling lanes I have ever seem - a feckin roundabout!! (Blob of paint sort - about 2 foot in diameter) Just how many cyclists were they expecting!!!
It never ceases to amaze me how much real common sense there is on this site. Its a major credit to all concerned. (Big pat on the back for everyone :D)
I wasn't suggesting that bicycles should ever pay tax especially when I don't agree with the poxy tax anyway:D
One point that is disturbing is that everyone now seems to be saying that cycling is dangerous :( It's bad when it gets to this sort of point.
What we really need is more of an education of car drivers (not all I might add) everyone seems to make the point that the car driver doesn't see them and thats certainly true of motorbikes too. Jeez the number of times I've nearly been knocked off that and I've got a massive bright blue bike with massive headlamps which I always have on and still the muppets don't see you
I'd like to see cycling proficiency put back in schools just to give these kids some road sense. (Some adults could probably do with this as well  )
I agree with the cycling proficiency thing - I mean I havent got a clue what legal requirements there are for riding a bike on the public roads and getting people aware from a very young age is very important...if this government really wants people to abandon their cars then why isn't such schemes put in place now for the younger generation.
Even though I started this thread about cyclists (my anger on one particular person who pi55ed me off), I do appreciate they can be a valid form of transport in the right capable hands.

Another thought: I avoid most cycle lanes when on my bike...
Well those that are either shared with pedestrians, or those that are a wide half footway/half cycle lane, seperated by only a white line - which is the majority around here.
Three reasons:
1) It is not yet set in law whose fault it is if cycle and ped collide. Generally, as with cars, the ped has 'right of way' (barring walking straight in front of you etc). Tricky to prove on a shared area... As a cyclist who (in younger days) could quite happily be doing 20mph on the flat, 40mph downhill, that would probably be seen as unreseasonable speed in the vicinity of peds!
2) All the above types lanes around here have give-ways when coming to a T-junction. So I have to give way to traffic on the sideroads, but if I was on the adjacent road they would have to give way to me!
3) A mate on 'shared with white line' cycleway was hit by a car pulling out of some premises. On eventually getting to court they found driver 75% to blame, cyclist 25% to blame! If he had been on the road it would have been clear cut (100% driver).
Next time you get annoyed at a bike not in a cycle lane bear these in mind.
(I do use lanes that are a segregated part on the carriageway though)
Rant over again. Phil
Riding straight through red lights annoys me most. Followed closely by going through reds on the curb, followed by stopping and pushing bike through red lights. Grrrr.
The riding straight through is probably a mental extension of 'well, I _could_ dismount on the pavement and push my bike through, so that's practically the same as riding through on the pavement. If I can do that, then I might as well stay on the road and do it'.
Also... Walking down a one way street with a narrow pavement, two 18-ish year olds on bikes were riding the wrong way, side by side, on the pavement. In fact, a lady with a pram was forced to push the pram onto the road to get around them. RIGHT IN FRONT of a policeman.
I had to say something (I was very polite!)
'Excuse me. Is there a law about riding bikes side by side on the pavement the wrong way up a one way street?'
'Probably'
'Can't you do something?'
'Like what? Give them a ticket?'
'Well, yes!'
'They'd lie about their name. There's no point'
'Well at least give them a bollocking or something! That woman had to push her pram on the road'
'Oh, ok. Next time I'll stop them by putting my foot out and shout at them and put my boot through their spokes so they don't do it again, shall I?'
Great attitude there, Mr. Policeman.
Anyhow...

Maybe this should go as a roadkill :D
Ok. coming down Felixtowe Road in Ipswich. It's a long, steep downhill road with a roundabout at the bottom. Traffic is CRAWLING along for no obvious reason. Within a few seconds I can see why. Two teenagers (15-16) are side by side with about 2 yards between the one on the left and the curb. They're taking up the whole lane, chatting to each other, with hands off the bars. Traffic is having to slow down and overtake in the other lane... which is busy. I go past as well (eventually), just a little bit before the roundabout. Traffic is queued up and I'm about the sixth on back from the line. I check 6 and they're still coasting down the road behind me. In a fit of pettiness at their lack of consideration, I pull my car to a stop right next to the curb, so they can't zoom by on the inside [Childish I know, but it was about the most stupid bit of riding I've seen. As it turns out, it was a moot point...]. No other cars have been able to overtake them. I look in my mirrors and they're still coasting down the hill, waving hands around and not looking at the road. Doing quite a turn of speed now. Getting closer...
Anyway, they didn't even LOOK in front of them until they were about 10 yards from my rear bumper and had no chance of stopping - or even going around me! They only just got their hands back on the bars.
There was a double *THUD* as both slammed into my back bumper and a clatter as the bikes fell over. One was comically plastered across my rear window before sliding down to the pavement, while the other went past the passenger window horizontally.
My passenger hadn't been looking in the mirror and was looking out their side window. They were fairly startled to see flying teenager undertake us.
Hazards on and out of the car.
'Are you ok?'
'erm...yeah' (they were both a bit dazed)
I check my paintwork for scratches and satisfy myself that there are (luckily) none.
Cyclists are grazed but ok. Still rolling around on floor though.
'RIGHT then. what the HELL did you think you were doing *rant rant*'
'Not our fault. You braked suddenly'
'Like HELL I did! You didn't even have your hands on the bars *rant rant* etc'
I then proceeded to lay into them and gave them a bloody bollocking before they pushed their bikes away. They couldn't ride them due to the mangled front wheels. Just deserts for idiocy, I think.
My passenger had to get back into the car as he was struggling to keep a straight face.
Ive gotta stick an oar in here ............
As you may know, I live in Cambridge. coupled with the usual pains of driving round smallish cities (women totally incapable of controlling their oversized cars, suicidal peds etc.) we also have arseloads of feckin cyclists. Cyclists in my experience are bad - they are not often aware of what surrounds them, and in my eyes, this is the worst attribute a road user can have.
But in Cambridge (and Oxford) it gets take to a whole new level - we get FOREIGN CYCLISTS !!   :ee:
Take your avaerage cyclist, then remove the fact that they have any knowledge of our road system, even down to the side of the road we drive on. Then remove their language skills so they dont understand signs or shouting. Then remove their facking brains, stick them in their saddlebags and set the fukkers loose on an unsuspecting public. Im not exaggerating when I say that I see at least one car get hit by a bike a week - and generally the bike rider IS NOT EVEN LOOKING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!! Its happened to me twice - getting hit could be a mistake by the rider, but when they dont even notice you until they are lying underneath your wheels .............
All bikers (and horseriders for that matter) should be made to pass a test, pay insurance and road tax before they are legally allowed out on the road. This may stop me pulling one of the following stunts ...........
1) Locking brakes up right behind cyclists - falloff rate 10%
2) Getting passenger to lean out of window and slap anatomy of rider - falloff rate 20%
3) Getting passenger to lean out of window and scream "ARRRGH" or similar - falloff rate 20%
4) Using high revving car to run bike into pavement or even better - lampost!! - falloff 50%
5) the daddy - running alongside them so they hit roadworks or open sewer - only managed this one once, but fukk it was worth it :D :D
6) Hitting riders arm with wing mirror - I did this once at 60 in a cherokee Jeep with no power steering - bloke went down like he had been shot :D
Docwra,
I can understand your anger with cyclists because to be honest they are pests on the road.
I dont agree with your actions tho. The cyclists involved must have done something to really p*ss you off, if you are willing to make them to fall of their bike.
I was a Cyclist and yeah occasionally I would not obey the rules of the road (you name me one person who does:confused: )
and their was an incident with me. I was cycling down a country lane going around 15mphish and a car pulled out right in front of me, not only did he not look, he pulled out VERY slowly:mad: which made me hit the back of him and swerve (or should I say fly   )off the road into a ditch (full of water by the way:eek: )
Then the f***ker has the cheek to get out of his car and have a go at me because I should of paid more attention and been more careful:mad:
So basically I am saying that although cyclists are annoying on the road (I will not argue that) think before you do anything, it is VERY easy to break a bone by falling of a bicycle that is not even rolling.
However I do agree with you when you state that they should take a test:) :)
If everyone who cycles on a regular basis was to take this test alot of accidents could/would be avoided:)
Not having a go mate, just my view:)

generaly they dont bother me unless theyre in pairs hogging the road, I know it says this is ok in the highway code but come on! a busy 60mph road and there riding away chatting to each other. thats what nearly causes accidents. dont they know how annoying it is to be travelling away at 60 to have to slow down to 15mph while some old bag at the front of the queue came out with her reading glasses on so cant see to overtake   in that moment I would love to shoot the feckers tyres out. Or when you get them racing allover FFS we have to do it on a track why cant hey! constantly coming up behind middle aged men in dayglow lycra and funny hats on clumped together so you cant get past and when you eventualy do you go around a corner and what do you find? loads more of them, it's like fuking leap frog. You go out for a nice relaxing country drive and come back a crazed phsycopath chewing the steering wheel.
I used to ride a push bike, then I moved onto motorbike's and even though I've had alot of close shaves the only time I was knocked off was by another motorbike, he was lucky! I got up and went over to hit him and realised my coller bone was broken (it clicked when I lifted my arm) so I had to make do with kicking his bike while he ran off:rolleyes:
As a rule of thumb I think you have to treat everyone on the road as if theyre idiots capable of doing anything at anytime, no matter what they drive.
Heres a list of which I bet someome has had an ding dong with.
Lorries
Busses
Coaches
motor bikes
Taxies
ride on mowers
Tractors
steam engines!!! (pauls fav)
them scooter things with a motor + kid weaving all over road
Transit vans
Yeah riding in pairs is a different story. I dont mind it when they see you coming and move over, but its the pr*cks  who just keep on cycling next to each other and you end up with a massive traffic jam that makes the M25 look like a sea resort during a snowy winter:p :D
heh, I used to cycle a fair bit so I'm pretty tolerant of cyclists, the only ones that annoy me are those that cycle side by side and take up far more road than they need to, the usually get beeped at, the one thing I think really should be banned from the road is horses apart from the big placid Shires pulling a cart or something.

Quite right - horses for courses I say
Nuhuh !!! ... no way ....... you are NOT banning horses from the road.
Around Here ..50% of all horse riders are 16-24year old girls wearing skin tight jodpurs, black shiney knee length boots, heavy black riding jacket, hair pinned back in pony tail, riding hat and usualy a crop ... ohmygod that crop !!!!
if slow down give them plenty of room and be nice ... they even wave at you.
There are very few pleasures to be had on the road without pratting around .... but this is one of them ... please dont ban my horsey girls ???
desperation here I know ... but .. knee length boots man ... fecking knee length boots!
JIMBO !! .. you have to invite me to dinner with that girl who has the farrier !
I'll be seeing her on friday, I shall see what I can do:D
Talking of dinner - she's on a 5week cookery course with my misses at the mo' so dinner on them:D :D :D
& no not like "that" on them:rolleyes:
Yeah !!
Just dont mention I fell out the ugly tree,
Mention, the car the house, the bike, the collection of talking potatoes ... she is only just an adult so she is probably still impressed by this sort of thing.
If you HAVE to mention my unique looks ... err ...... tell her I look like Moby ! .... not Pob !!!!
Oh god those Jodpurs
girlfriend has been knocked off her bike 3 times on the same road, twice by the same bus! The bus drivers never apologised or stopped on either occasion, but luckily nothing broken just cuts / bruises, broken wheels / bent frame. It's cos the bus has to cut in through the cycle lane to reach the bus stops and the drivers don't look for the cyclists in the lane...
The other time was an old lady who was driving in the cycle lane because she didn't like driving close to other traffic! She stopped though and took her to hospital and apologised but my girlfriend didn't get her details or report it because "she was a nice old lady, if a bit out of it"... argh exactly the sort of old lady who should be barred from driving before she kills someone...

I hope you reported it to the bus company and got the driver(s) responsible sacked or at least disciplined. The bus company should at least have paid for your bike to be repaired etc.
Most of the near death experiences I have had on a bike have been due to buses - one passed me too close at 40mph and nearly squashed me, luckily I was able to swerve to the left down another road. When I caught up with him at the next stop and asked him what he thought he was doing, all he could keep saying was "you bloody cyclists never look where you're going etc" it had nothing to do with me looking anywhere as he was overtaking me and it was his responsibility not to hit me. It was obvious that he hadn't seen me at all and was trying to deflect blame back onto me.
Johnny - horeseriding girls - you'll never satisfy a girl who has had a peice of meat that big between her legs:D
WAK, I am willing to die trying.
Besides its not size that matters ... for example can a horse do this .................... I'm telling you, you really have to be here to see this ....... woah hoah ........ yeah .... hmmm I dont think so ! ;)
