View Full Version : Sprint/Drift day at Lydd Raceway 28th April

Ive arranged a sprint/drift day at Lydd raceway for you lovely sxoc members. Some of you will know the track from the Autoglym Drift Championship round last year.
http://www.lyddinternationalraceway.com/
It’s a small technical track so its all 2nd gear, maybe 3rd so might not be suitable for the more experienced track day heroes but its still a hell of a lot of fun.
The day is for 15 cars to ensure plenty of track time for everyone. There may be spaces for an extra few cars but that’s at my discretion.
Times: Friday 28th April. 10am – 4pm.
Costs: £75 per car with an additional £10 per extra driver. There is a £20 per car tyre wall insurance in place to cover Lydds time to rebuild the wall if you destroy them, this is refundable at the end of the day. Only offending drivers will lose their £20.
If spaces have to be filled by non-members a £15 premium will be charged.
A deposit of £20 (cheque or cash) for each car will be required by the end of this month, made out to HERONS PARK LLP and sent to myself at:
The balance is to be paid two weeks before the date to enable me to pay Lydd a week in advance. Alternatively send me 2 cheques at the same time, one for the deposit, one for the balance.
Format: Ideally aim to arrive at the track at 9am to give yourself enough time to sort out your cars and have a cup of tea and a chit chat.
Cars will be run one at a time to minimise risk for two laps (hopefully, time dependant) of the chosen circuit (probably the left hand part of the track in this piccy) and then the car will rejoin the queue.
http://www.lyddinternationalraceway.com/lir/images2/track.jpg
The cafe will be open for a 45 minute lunch break at approx 12.00.
Late afternoon I would like to run a couple of timed laps for everyone with a bottle of wine for the fastest.
The bar will be open afterwards.
Rules:
Even though this is a drift/sprint day I strongly advise that if you aren’t competent at drifting then you don’t, stick to sprinting. You will end up damaging your car and lose your £20 tyre wall deposit, not to mention possibly ruining the day for everyone by wasting time and potentially getting us kicked off as I’ve promised the owners that we are all sensible and wont drive like idiots.
No burnouts. If you do you’ll be kicked off the track.
Stay off the grass. If you do go off onto the grass dont wheelspin off of it.
If your car leaks fluids like a sieve then sort it out before hand. The track hosts international karting championships so they wont appreciate their track being ruined by oil.
If you are drifting don’t run the tyres down to the metal for the same reasons as above.
Helmets and a race suit will be required. If you don’t have your own then Lydd can hire them to you for £5.
Don’t be a dick. It’s a fun day but remember that even though it’s a relatively slow track its still dangerous. I don’t want to see anyone bending their cars.
Think that covers everything.
Ive atached a few pics from a previous drift day there to give you an idea of size.
Finally, we need a couple of marshals to help out on the day. Any volunteers? You’ll be getting the best view of the track.
Please list your name below if you are up for this
Cheers

What regs do helmets have to comply to? I've got a bike helmet that's OK for track days but I'm pretty sure it doesn't comply to race standards

As long as your noggins covered it should be fine, mine's a motorbike helmet and has served me well :)
This is going to be hardcore. Seriously contemplating heading up to Newcastle after drifting at Lydd

Fookin hell. That'll be a six hour drive at LEAST!
Steve,
This is the one you were telling me about last Saturday isn't...
I might be up for this, but I never driven on a track at all...:D
Would it be ok for a total newbie - that you would have to babysit lol ?
If you guys reckon it will be safe to let me out on the track then stick my name down
Is there any restriction on the exhaust noise ?

No exhaust noise restrictions.:)
This track is fine for newbs. TBH, if you cant drive it safely you shouldnt even be on the road.:D Just dont go balls out on your first lap, take it easy to start with and build up your speed. Perfect for trying out your new brakes as well.;)

Should also have said, cheers to Steve for organising this. Most of us in the South East have no-where legal to have fun. Nice to see someone making an effort to get us some circuit time. I for one will be buying the man a drink at the bar afterwards :)
what time does the bar open?? :wack:
i keep forgetting that your from near these parts james, this will be an excellent day... when i was there last year i was using brens car, so i can wait to have a go with a car that im familiar to :)

Bar opens at about 3pm from memory (I do a lot of Karting down at Lydd in the Rotax) Yeah, I'm only up in Bromley, just my car is never working or here so it makes dori-meets a tad difficult. I still haven't been out with the East London crew. Lydd rocks, although I must say I'm a bit more worried than I used to be as the skyline takes a lot longer to stop when you get it wrong :wack:
I'll be the only one doing sprints then... :p

There are still spaces available but if a club member wants to attend then they will get priority.
Take note though, this isnt really a place to learn drifting. There isnt much run off and TBH its just going to piss people off if you spin at every corner as obviously its going to cut into everyone elses track time, not to mention potentially damaging your car. Please read this bit of the rules of the day...

Oh, by the way, you'll still have to send me the deposit cheque but obviously that will be refunded if you get bumped by a club member. Ta.:)

I've just spotted the photo's (slow bugger I know:whip: )
Looks like there are some seriously big banks for me to reverse up
Think I'll be joining Nicely in sprinting though - that's got to be the best part of 200 miles from home so I don't want to risk bending the car arsing about with sideways shinanigans :)
Can you order in some weather like in the pics though please Steve? :Plug:

Yep - No drifting for me just sprinting and having fun
Cheque posted :)
Shopping list:
- 1x working car
- 1x welded diff
- 1x set of better suspension
If I only get the first I'll be OK, but I really need the second as well! The third would be nice too.
James, any chance of getting your buddy to hook me up with a couple of sets of those decent tyres either beforehand or on the day?
See you all there :)
I would be interested in a chance to try a track day, is this an environment that would suit a complete beginner?
Looking at the track, speeds would be low and it offers a lot of practice? But not a lot of room to get out of other peoples way.
If the track is not suitable then is it possible to attend as a spectator? Happy to volunteer as a marshal if thats a suitable role for a complete track newbie.

Yes, I'd say its ideal for a beginner. Cars will be run one at a time so there wont be any cars to avoid and therefore nothing to hit unless you go off track.

Id be interested definitely, but am unsure of how risky it would be for me to attempt drifting on it - how wide is the track?? As wide as a two lane road, for instance??
Up for it though, definitely. :)
As long as you have a basic idea of car control it is very easy to keep it on the black stuff. It's only when you start to go balls out that you start to risk hitting a barrier. :) You shouldn't be put off by the worry of crashing, as long as you are within your limits you will be fine. :)
Steve: Has my cheque turned up yet? :)

I'm transferring the engine/box/rear end/coilovers into this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/30psi/DSCN9430s.jpg
The S12 is a daily driver so I need to build the Datsun 910 into a position where I can transfer the engine and get it running in one day. Before I transfer the engine it will be mapped running about 1.4 bar. The standard diff in the Datsun is too small and won't take the power. Hence my reason for getting everything else ready before moving the engine over.

Sadly it's totally impregnated in numerous brands of engine oil/gearbox oil/Brake fluid ect which will leave me somewhat flamable :wack:

Afraid there wont be any tyre changing gear there but the track is very smooth so you shouldnt get through too many tyres. I reckon 3 pairs is plenty.
I've got 2 spare 17" Kahn RSR's.
Do you just want them on the front for more grip? Or as purely more 17's for the rear?
Either/both ... I've only got shite steelies with Nankangs which were total crap on the front last time I drifted, had to switch to decent wheels/tyres on the front.
I have tyres to go on them, although I'm also on the lookout for another decent pair of 17's. James if you can get hold of any of those decent part-worn's they'd be perfect :)

SteveCarter200
24-03-2006, 16:26
Ive also got some spare S13 fitment 7x15s with tyres on that anyone is welcome to borrow but they would have to be collected from me before hand and the tyres replaced afterwards (or bung me some cash) and returned back to me as I wont have room to bring them down on the day.

If anyone knows someone who is wanting a space at Lydd, mine may be up if I go to round 2 up at Teeside. I don't think Mrs Mitch would be too chuffed with me leaving on a Friday morning to go drifting and returning Sunday morning, let alone the costs involved:eek:
Anyone want a personalised flameproof track suit at GB prices?
