View Full Version : The goings on at Oulton park today

 just got back from Oulton, and I must say, what a splendid time one had :D and for only 59 english pounds.

No messing about with tools/wheels/tyre pressures and all that malarky (even spare wheel and stuff stayed in the car), just turned up, got fed bacon sandwiches, then onto the track  Staff were excellent, and because there were so many of them compared to drivers it all felt very personal, I almost felt like a very rich bloke with his own private track ;)

There were only about 13 cars on track: 911's, CTR, M3, Alpina B9  track TVR, 3 MR2 turbos, entry level caterham and me...

This was the first proper shakedown of the car since the rebuild, and considering both myself and the car were somewhat off colour last time I visited Oulton I was keen to see how everything would feel, should I have gone for the bigger turbo after all??? And those pesky Falken Fk451's, would they perform? And dont forget the only loose nut in the car :wack:

Well the car was awesome, it pretty much munched its way through most of the field repeatedly. It was excellent comparing it to the 911's and a nice surprise to out accelerate the 911 turbo on the straight several times, not to mention being faster into and more importantly out of the corners, than any of them, although thats probably the loose nut behind the wheel and cautious porche drivers coming into play :wack: And the 911 turbo had a ring sticker proudly displayed

The B9 was awesome for an old, not really modded car (mainly suspension apparently, very low), the only thing that seemed to slow it down were failing brakes... with less power, it was bombing around at a similar pace to me on occasion, very impressive :notworthy

Had an excellent 2-3 laps chasing the caterham after he passed me, he had a passenger and it was one of the lowest powered caterhams you can buy, but feck did it shift  On some of the corners I had to really slow for, he just carried on accelerating.... I had to cane the ass off my car just to keep him in view, although the guy did used to race mini's, so it was probably a relaxed sunday drive for him :D

The other stuff was a rolling chicane :p

Power spread was perfect for oulton, and I absolutely love having 255's on front and rear, gives the car an amazingly neutral feel that you can turn into oversteer as and when you want, but so predictably and progressively its silly. It was dry and 10 degrees ish and the Falken F451's were nothing short of amazing, even at the end of a 20 minute session they just gripped and gripped... I didnt find the limits of traction today, I thought I knew where they were, but even with deliberate provocation the worst I got was the odd gentle 4 wheel drift. In the past if I entered a tight corner too quickly, it would tend to understeer, but that doesnt appear to be an option any more. The car ran at 80-85 degrees on track, so hopefully in the summer I shouldnt have cooling issues :)

Although all was well today, I'm still wondering if I will want coilovers for the summer.... to make it that little bit stiffer and more importantly lower for track...... would have to keep height at its current level for the road though....

Feck, will I ever be satisfied :p

All in all, what a stonking, no hassle day, drive there, have fun, drive home, no effort required

The track day bug never stopped biting, its now on steroids, so going to feed it with several track sessions before Spa/ring and the north west sprint/hillclimb championship.... which reminds me, you have no excuse not to do some sprints and hillclimbs, low cost and low time demanding ;)

Lots of reasons, but I wont be doing any airfield days for a while, just sticking to the main tracks.... :p

Sounds like a top day out young man :) - I had a feeling the Falkens would be superb on the track :D

(god I love being right :p)

Would you say your handling was more than adequate on just dampers and springs then?

What were your shock settings?

Tricky question... I have no doubt that with coilovers and lower ride height I could go much faster round corners, saying that, with dampers, springs, ARBs, pineapples and bushes coupled with the right tyres, I'd certainly say it was more than adequate: 911's are an awesome benchmark, and the car compared pretty well with them today. Following the 911 carreras very closely through various corners was interesting.... cascades which is a fast left hander, looked like they had more bounce.... then through foulstons and knickerbrook chicanes the porches were twitchy to say the least... although I usually took a tidier/more direct line (I dont mind driving over the curbing :wack: ), I had ample traction to be already accelerating hard from the apex with the consequence I was past them straight after the corner. And dont get me wrong, well driven 911's are :notworthy just trying to highlight that shocks and dampers can be more than adequate

That said, if I didnt have to drive over dozens and dozens of speed bumps every day I would have coilovers in an instant... I just want to get the car set up and leave it as opposed to keep changing ride heights/alignment etc. Although I can see myself getting them at some point :wack:

I have the same set up as you, eibach/agx and I can't complain. Suprised at the Falkens being so good. Wonder what the new 452's are like.Well done for whipping the porkers ass:thumbs: See you at Donington:)

Did you get any brake vibration? I know you like to kill discs ;) How did they stand upto the heat compared to standard size?

Did you get the 2 PM's I sent you about this over the last week or two? I wonder if they werent seated quite correctly (hubs are even) as both discs developed high spots and slight vibrations prior to track.... started vibrating a little on track, then cleared, then started again then were fine... now no vibrations at all. We are only talking about a touch of vibration on immediate application. I left standard Z32 rear pads on which I think have completely died/glazed as my braking is somewhat impaired at present without a bit of heat in the DS2500's, in fact, I think the last hour of the session was principally using my front brakes :wack: They never struggled to stop the car :)

Thats just what you get when you abuse brakes. Our APs are the same.

Thats the first track outing for one of your 324mm big brake kits with standard calipers then Bren?

Yep :) Sound like they stood up fine. A bit of vibration that comes and goes doesnt mean anything, its just what youll get with extreme braking, its normal :)

The majority of the main (minor) vibration had been on the road and with the slight high spots led me to think I hadnt seated them correctly... but several hours of track abuse has smoothed them out completely  And we were really only talking momentary and slight vibration when you start to apply pressure.... it wasnt there much either... but I am anal about that kind of stuff :p

Strange. Maybe they werent seated correctly. I still dont understand why we are getting vibration at all but there you go.

With it being road use that makes it more likely that its pad transffer as your more likely to stop stationary with the brakes on than you are on the track? Ive found with standard disk that a good track thrashing can actualy reduce vibration rather than add to it.

Appart from Silverstone where you get proper vibration with a fully cracked disk :wack:

I wish it deserved a real well done... the more I drive the more I realise how hard it is to do it well, I think I would have to do a trackday every week for 6 months to become competant never mind good :wack: , wheres that lottery win then :D

At least I now recognise where I'm making all of my mistakes....

Steve You'd need a 8-10mm spacer on the front to fit coilovers and 255s see Brens christmas group buy thread :)
