I would just like to say thank you to everyone who was at Elvington for all their support and offers of help after my poor car ended up on its roof  . Everyone there was fantastic, especially you guys

Thanks in particular must go out to:

Dr Bob who came to check on us before we had even got in the ambulance.

SM who had somehow found out who i was and found 2 spare shells for me by the time the ambulance dropped us back at the paddock area.

Bren for offering to trailer the car back to Leeds for me.

Chem200 for taking me out in his car and even letting me loose in it for a few laps

Swebb for offering me the shells (I will hopefully be in touch soon)

Emma from Apex and her fella Gareth for giving us a lift back to Leeds

... and everyone else for being so understanding, this really is an amazing club :notworthy .

I have a few pics of the carnage somewhere but dont know how to post them, could someone put them up if i email them?

Hi mate, no probs for the shells, just let me know when you want to come and look at them.
If you want to email me the pics to swebb200sx@tiscali.co.uk i'll post them for you.

Most important thing is that no one was hurt! I was directly behind you when it happened. VERY UNLUCKY INCIDENT!
We stopped but wasn't sure if we were allowed to stop on track, plus more and more cars started parking up there behind the cones ( Dr.Bob) so once I saw you'd both climbed out and give us a wave that you were ok we headed back to the pits under a red flag to let the oficials do their jobs.

Accidents happen, and cars can be fixed, its only a chunk of metal.
With help from SXOC it will probably cost a lot more in time than £ ;) You'll more than likely end up making peoples tea, and brews. Maybe providing a garage for the guy to sleep in :D

Look through the thread about SM's recent crash, and you'll see how SXOC pulls things together in times of crisis

Plus point is you'll know the car inside out once you've re-shelled it

If you need an extra pair of hands I might be able to fly up for a day

True, I assume you had no ill effect today ?

We'll reshell it, we just need to know where and when, anybody with space somewhere between Sheffield and the lakes  please shout

Arghh!! Damn computers :smash: Swebb, i have tried to email you those pics it will only accept 1 as an attachment and then i got a failed delivery report. Not sure whats going on. I will try again later.

As for injuries, my back is a quite sore but thats all. Quite lucky in some respects.

Thanks for the offers of help, i am just looking at my options and then when a plan of attack is sorted i will be very grateful any help :notworthy .

The guys this human dynamo type thing. Hes into everything and will launch himself into engine bays with spanner to hand given half that chance. We have to hold him back at work as he just cant help getting stuck into any minor vehicle problem that comes up

We spend a lot of time telling him to get back into his packing area as we are peferectly capable of taking a wheel off. Ive actually given up now and if any car work needs doing we just set him at it and in a blur of Michaelness its done :Wack: Its like pressing the big red button :wack:

i'd take that challenge on  i've reshelled a calibra turbo in a weekend with 2 mates, and i reckon me bennett, fry1 and big matt J could do a 200 in a weekend if we put our minds to it. might be a bit rusty ( me that is not the car) but i reckon its easily possible with some effort and swearing.
no reason why 4 people who know the car well and are good on the spanners etc couldnt do it provided there's not big hick ups. all depends on how stripped the other shell is and if theres things like subframes etc left on that dont need to be swapped over :)
i'd quite like to give it a try on a 200, we've done god knows how many engine swaps etc and hit a point where me and matt J could get an engine out in under 45 mins with him doing most of the work and me smoking :D
tell you what tell me when and where the reshell's taking place and if i can get there i'll bring lots of tools and maybe drag another north easterner along and we'll make a go of helping you guys get it done as quick as poss :)

SM
05-02-2006, 20:22
I think Swebbs 2 shells dont even have subframes, and 1 doesnt have a loom IIRC. They are very stripped :wack: The one with the loom has an import loom so would need swapping anyway - that onm is the old Apex Drift shell Midgers was drifting last year

marty_t3
05-02-2006, 20:22
Kev and I were discussing this last night. I reckoned a day would be enough but kev reminded me about all the little jobs that'd need doing... like fitting the interior (and i don't just mean seats and a carpet). There's at least a day worth of jobs inside the car alone. If it was just suspension/drivetrain/engine then yea a day would be enough.... taking the rest into account, a second day would be needed.

lol that makes it a bit more challenging then! :D
yeah interior can be a bit of a bitch, but i still reckon a weekend is easily do-able if there's people who know they're stuff doing the work. feeding looms and stuff like that is not my bag at all  i could spend a weekend alone doing that :D where someone like bennett could probably do it in under a minute with his eyes closed whilst badgers knawed his ankles :wack:

Assuming we have plenty of space then that'd work fine. Would be even quicker if we could get one team working on removing parts from the red car and another team fitting them to the donor shell.

 probably quicker still if you got everyone bar maybe 2 on the dead car stripping it and the other 2 doing some prep work on the new shell, that way you're not waiting for stuff and its all ready in one go. also means you can lay out the order of parts you want fitted, this first, then that etc. :)
another point, if its a really bare shell underneath, it would probably be worth giving it some serious undersealing etc whilst its bare, doesnt take long and adds years to the shell :)

The 200SX is quite a simple car really. And I would have though it would be quite easy to just remove the drivetrain in its subframes anyway, well at least the back end. Or maybe I'm just showing my naivity on the 200. I've always worked on my own cars and consider myself quite capable with a spanner :wack: but have always found I work better as part of a team (more motivation when things get rusty/stuck/broke etc).

I've seen a cossie shell stripped in an afternoon by a team of guys
Obviously putting it all back takes a lot longer.

If someone knows the right order to do the jobs it makes life a lot easier

At the end of the day, does it matter if it takes one weekend or two?

I must find my CD manual and start having a read

If i can afford to run 2 cars i would like to rebuild the poor old thing into a weekend/trackday car. Hopefully i will have a good idea of what direction i would like to go down over the next couple of days. My head is just spinning at the minute thinking about everything. I am going to have a chat with a couple of people over the next day or 2 and see where we get to.

The car is currently at my parents house which conveniently has a double garage and a large yard area which i am sure we could take over for a weekend although somewhere more central to everyone might be better?

have you thought about an SR to S13 transplant? get a decent S13 shell and transfer what can be transferred ( SR, gearbox, loom, ecu etc ) and break the whats left for spares, sell the CA and assosciated gearbox and gubbins, that way you've got a superior shell ;) and you're getting a bit of money back :)

My folks live in a little town called Millom. Its not as far north as me so will be a bit closer for most of you.

You could fit both cars in the garage but it might be a bit cramped. There is plenty of room in the yard for one car though.

Oh and on the subject of Tee's shell, no offence to Tee, but that car was a nail. It's bent and had been in an accident before he bought it, the passenger airbag had been set of.. There must be better 14a shells available somewhere.

Good job I search for my name occasionally :wack:

When, where would this happen? :)

I'd say S13 the running gear and wheels/hubs :D , but you'd need to alter things like the exhaust and IC.
Got an engine crane and MIG welder if required, but no donation as petrol and hotel costs money :p :D .

I was chatting about what we thought was the best for you with Bren.
It maybe as well breaking your and buying a full car - we can help with the strip. It just your was so mint, and mint cars are pretty cheap. You could get a fair bit back for engine/GB/Diff/Interior (did Airbags go off?) and overall cost might be not to dissimilar.
Many options, your choice, Its difficult though and we'll help whatever you decide.

They are S14 shells, and while cheap (Free) they were stripped as not perfect. Some touches of rust ect. Would mean more parts, they are still an option, there are jsut 10's of options and Tricky is trying to get his head round which one is best.

Id also be looking at buying another S14a and swpaping the goodies from the broken car into it.

We could spend the weekend stripping the old car, cleaning up the parts readying them for sale, pricing them etc and also swap over any and all goodies into the new car including box, engine etc it its felt the old parts are better than the new.

I just dont see how we will find a good S14a shell, theve got to be a very rare commodity as the majority of cars are broken because theyve had a smack, not because theyve popped an engine.

And if we do find a good shell then:

1) It wont be cheap

2) We will still have to buy in a large number of panels

3) It will most probably have to be painted

It must be something about Red Cars. When I bought my Red 200, everyone said red cars are involved in more accidents each year than any other colour :wack:

Anyway, 3months later... And these all happened within a month...

My mums Red 306XSi got sideswiped, £4000 damage. A kid ran his bike into the side of my dads Red Rangie and wrecked a door & the rear quater with his handlebars & pedals. Then two days later my brothers Red Seat Leon Cupra R got sided by a girl pulling out of a side street with a cuppa in her hand!
Then I smashed the Red 200 up!

So I went back to my normal choice of car colour - BLUE :D rouch wood, no problems yet ;)

Right, time for an update:

Having looked at the options open to me it looks like I am going to strip down my car for spares and buy another S14a. I couldnt find any S14a shells that i would have been totally happy with so I am on the hunt for one that works.

I will be very grateful for any help striping the car down if people are available  I am hoping to get stuck into it next weekend if thats any good. Accomodation and beer will, of course, be layed on, as will bandages and a swear box :smash: Obviously this isnt the huge charity rebuild to get me back on the road that it first appeared to be so dont worry if you offered your services but dont want travel all this way just to tear a car apart, the fact that you even offered says a lot about this club. In fact it is a large part of the reason I have decided to look for another 200.

On a slightly depressing note: I am about to go and pick up an Astra diesel estate to keep me mobile for a few weeks. I can hardly wait :wack:

Mainly so nobody sees my dodgy wiring skills (its appalling considering i am a sparky) and partly so all the nigly little things are out of the way and we can get stuck into the big stuff that i have no clue about.

Right then, the details:

The work will be carried out at my folks house which is at Millom, post code LA18 4JZ. Basically come up the M6 to junction 36 and head towards Barrow-In-Furness. Eventually Millom will appear on the signs. Its about an hour from the motorway. Once you hit Millom you will drive past a school on your left and then come to a mini roundabout. Turn left and drive down this road past the banks, over the speed bumps and take the 3rd right. The backstreet of my folks house is right in front of you and just after the 3 garages there is a large aluminium gate on your left. Behind this gate is the final resting place of my poor 200. One of the houses opposite is number 19 and thats us :)

It looks like there could be more people than space at my folks so i will sort out a B&B near by. Can i just have a final count of who's coming so i can sort everything out.

thanks guys  ,
Rich

Hummm I think putting it in an S14 will be a bit more tricky that putting it in an AX but thats just my point of view. I was kinda thinkin of taking mine or martys S13s and slingin it in that as it will take one with no problems at all but open to ideas.

Im not overly well equiped with tools but I have a A BIG hammer :D a 1.5t trolley jack, axle stands, and a nice set of impact sockets for those rusty bolts. And a cordless Dremel :wack:
Most of the jobs I do on my car are done at work with their tools, but I can't take em out of the works as they are being used pretty much all the time :(

Me and my old man have got sockets and hammers and the likes but if there are a few people doing different jobs then some tools might get a bit sparse. Probably no need for everyone to haul whole tool kits up but maybe some of the more common sized sockets and wrenches like 12, 14 and 17mm.

I was just going to get a load of beers in to be honest. Millom has an exceptionally high percentage of arseholes and a questionable tolerance for "outsiders" which is why i live about 30 miles away now  .

I have sorted a couple of twin rooms at a B&B for some of you and there should be enough floor space for everyone else. The only things i can think you will need is sleeping bags and pillows for those who are staying here and some brute force and foul language for those more stubborn jobs. Oh and a towel. That should do it i think.

The old dear has been baking cakes and stocking up on food so it looks like we will be well taken care of in that department  .
