We now have some Apexi active tail silencers in stock. These are a bung type device that fit into the cars tailpipe and reduce noise levels at low speed but open up to free exhaust flow under load and when you need full power.

Testing has shown a 128whp gain by swapping the standard silencer to the Apexi Active silencer and yet the car was still 12db lower than when run with the standard silencer.

Ive just tried it in one of our Apex Performance twin silencer systems and it fits like a glove, could have been made for the job  Theyre 115mm diameter :)

Theyre going to be around £119 but Im trying other suppliers to see if I can get the price down.

... and what size of pipe will these fit into?

PS I suppose price might be helpful as well

Is that 5 inches in real money?

You're still gong to get stung on a track with a driveby noise test unless you back off going past it aren't you?

4.5"

Yep  But youll have no problems with static test and your car should be nice and quiet for general road use but without the perminant restriction that normal bungs pose when you want to hoon around :)

Hi Bren, am I right in assuming this is single-exit only and won't fit the "sensible" twin-exit exhausts?

Cheers :)

damn

bren

Thats right :) If the twin exit is too loud then a decat silencer is what you need.

No good for a Nur Spec then?

was looking at these the other day, and very confused as to how they can quote a 128 bhp increase at the wheels from fitting one

The car was obviously tuned to run with a free flowing exhaust system. I would imagine they then stuck a standard and very restrictive exhaust on it with cats, did a power run, removed that and replaced it with a very free flowing system with the active tailpipe.

And they started with a very highly tuned car in the first instance so the standard exhaust would have robbed it of huge amounts of power.

Also note that the boost with the silencer was 15psi but only 10 with the standard system ;)

I thought it must have been a typo and they meant 12.8bhp but ther graphs show 128.

128whp?

Edit: Crap, should've read the whole thread before posting... ignore me. ;)

Seemed to good to be true - but it will also lose 80bhp on a unsilenced car ;)

Testing was done to Drag Sports specifications using their own R33 GT-R Skyline as the test car.
http://www.dragsport.com/
294bhp with standard exhaust,10psi
422bhp with ats, 15psi
503bhp with non silencer @ 19psi

Its a very misleadign test when you look into it properly as its evident that the tailpipe is still a very restrictive piece of kit if its dropping power by 80bhp over a free flow system.

But then you have to ask yourself why there are such large differences in boost and why they werent levelled.

EGT's and backpressure I guess.

Whould be very interesting if someone could give it a try with the ATS!! I'm might buy one later on, if it is quite silent when just driving normal and growling when floring it !! Don't have the cash to buy it my self now as I will need a new cat-back system at the same time and I have bought to much all ready ... in the last 3 days :wack:

Bren, any chance you could find out if this will work in a GT-Spec exhaust for me.

Cheers

To bad :(
Bren, why don't you go and try it out and make a nice movie how it sounds
before and after mounting the silencer, and of course some benching before
and after to ?? Doesn't that sound like a splendid idee ?? :D ;)

I have one, it works on the apexi exti and the gt spec, but not the stainless n1 evo.

If anybody has a db meter we can test mine with and without and on flypast and about 50-100 other specs at brens track day, thus laying this eternal question to rest.
