Shortly after the 27th i will have the following added to my mods list.

Coilovers.
Rear Camber arms.
Rear Toe arms.
Pineapple Rings (as we wouldn't be able to do the bushes in time).
Braided brake hoses.
Castrol brake fluid - enough to change the the fluid & bleed the brakes.
Silkoline Pro RS 10w50 (to add to my 1 litre i have left in my old container - will sort my oil change after the track day as it's only just been changed).

I also will have about £300 cash spare after all my bills / petrol etc.
But ill keep this close for any surprises.

555s & Mapping with end of febuary pay.

I don't mind being ':ghey:'

Just got 10326 on my powerball :D not bad for first day! Will um... Improve my grip of the steering wheel and the strength of my arm for track days :wack: honest!

I've got brakes and suspension arms on the way.

So, with that little lot that Mart's getting - and when you've both had your 555s mapped, we're all up to the same level. Just in time for the track season.

IIWY Martin I'd swap the Pineapples for those new metal bush things Brens doing - same thing but a bit more extreme

Don't bother with the toe arms you won't need them until 40mm plus lowering, and to get that to sit right you'd have to go 50+ on the front. much lower and you'll be going outside the practical range of the cars setup.

Go for the front TC/castor arms instead (like me) or put the money towards an oil cooler

Think im going to try book it into APT sometime on the week beginning monday the 27th of feb or the weekend immediately before. I'll see how much money i get and maybe buy the 555's ready this month.

It still works out the same in the end though really  will speak to Gary when i'm paid.

We don't want any engine failures :indiff:

Have you thought about getting these Coilovers set up right, I mean weights as well as alignment etc

While you're up at Garys you'd be close to SCA where he used to work?? may be they could help you

Don't forget you'll need approx £100 for alignment alone

Yes an oil cooler, think Brens kit is about £150 now

There are some hoses you could use in the driftworks shop too, we could make it up ourselves, hoses were the expensive part but those are cheapy & SS braided too

I use a 19 row Mocal oil cooler, a bigger mouth bumper, and some redline water wetter in the coolent.

Concentrate on the brakes and suspension first, its all about them and the driver

I haven't read it

But I know that people with oil coolers see temps approaching 120 C, that 10w 50 oil is only good to 130 so they are running it pretty fine even with a cooler.

It wouldn't be my choice to run without one but people have done it

What in particular has been said on that thread?

I run the 5w40 oil for added cold protection, its only good to 120C but I can do it as I have the cooler

amen

Unless you can get a thermo plate that doesnt open until 100C minimum and your going to be doing trackdays every weekend then i wouldnt bother.

If i had a proper drift or track car then i would fit one  constantly getting the oil to over 140C will shorten its life but a trackday 3 times a year or so isnt going to do squat to it.

spend the money on one of those cooling panels to channel the air through your FMIC and the engine

archenemy.co.uk
19-01-2006, 10:47
I don't know

that looks like a mixed bag to me, I do have a thermo plate, so do most, It starts to open at about 70 C don't know when its fully open may be 100 C

He says he would fit one on a proper track car

When I spoke to oilman about this (who sells the oil in all your cars) he said the oils protective properties are good to 130C for the 10-50 and 120C for the 5-40. Higher temps than that would see the oil giving reduced protoection to your engine parts - i.e. they start to wear quickly. Once you get to that situation its a viscious circle,

oil gets too hot > engine wear > bits of engine in oil > increased friction > oil temps rise > and so on

Its added insurance, I'd fit one

Reminds me I must finish my cooling panel

I have enough spare to sort out all my alignment, I'm not sure about the cooler. Changing my oil straight after the track day anyway. :) I can moniter the temperature anyway. It won't rise that suddenly. If i see it at 120 still going up ill just come off the track and let the car cool down a bit.

Isn't it opening at 70 too soon. Thought the oil is best at a minimum of 80.

Yeah but 15 mins sessions are a bit short eh, Lap to warm up, one to cool down, doesn't leave you much in the middle :wack:

I am fcuked if my clutch gives up this Sunday.... i've been out and nailed it a few times in fourth and there's no hint of slip *touches wood* so I might be ok.

Oil cooler wise, it's not something I can afford before Bedford, maybe i'll look into it for later in the year.

Allignment wise, I'm going to drop it a further 15mm or so and then have the allignment set back to spec - was going to have it done on the laser geo machine in Welwyn, did an ace job last time.

Cornerweighting feels like overkill ATM - but if it's comparable in price i'd look into it. Any ideas Phil?

Muhahahaha, I don't even have to look - if something untoward is showing on the gauges, i get a nice loud alarm. :D

I got my allignment done in Supertyres in Welwyn.

It's not like the tracking etc that you could do in KwikFit - It's a FULL laser allignment set-up, so can't do cornerweights, but it does have full diag of camber, castor, toe, lock etc. They provide you with a printout showing before, after and target geometry.

I think this is probably enough for track noobs like me. It cost £100 to have everything corrected when I fitted my Eibachs. If someone can find somewhere else which will also do cornerweights etc for a comparable price.

SRF is uber expensive, can't be worth it

There are a number of lesser Castrol fluids in the response range, I think I have this correct but you can check

Castrol Response
Castrol Super response
Castrol super response racing

Could be wrong

Anyhow I use the MOTUL RBF 600 Dot 4 racing stuff as on my spec page. Its £10 per litre, you get it in 500ml bottles. To do a total change you'll need 1 litre, and have a bit to spare.

I need some more, plus some other stuff

Why don't you all work out what you need from the oilman and I'll put in a group buy order :)

Ah that'll be the place my brother and I went recently and had an argument with the manager after he said he had 2 tyres, started stripping the tyres off my Bros car then mysteriously couldn't find said tyres, and offered us the next ones up which were an extra £20 each, with next to no discount for his incompetence.

Oy! Keep your chat off the Trackday thread :smash:

Pot/Kette/black

My thoughts on oil coolers.

1) Road driving
More harm than good
2) Trackdays, short sessions, cool air - you can manage without
3) Trackdays, 30mins sessions, 20-odd ambient, pushing hard - you'll hit 120oC even with a cooler - essential.

My Thermostatic plate seems to keep the oil at 70oC in this weather, on the work run, no higher unless I really push on, and I mean really push, for more than 5mins ;) Last year it kept it at 80oC but then I had 3.5L oil capacity, now i have 5L oil capacity so it runs cooler anyway.

One good thing is, soon the cooler will be on the S13 (they seem to need them at an earlier point from what I gather) and the S14 can be left oil-cooler free :D Which has to be better for my daily drive. I'll also drop the oil from the S14 from 10w50 to 5w40

archenemy.co.uk

Do you remember the thread I wrote about changing the silicone fluid out. Its a taotally different colour to the mineral stuff, and they don't mix so I was able to measure it accurately, right down to how much for each wheels in turn. It was very surprising, I'll dig out the thread

1 litre is enough, trust Phil

Rich and Martin (and anybody else) think about what oil you need and brake fluid.

I can order when you are ready, some time in the next couple of weeks should give plenty of time

leelee
19-01-2006, 12:07

if you do go for a group buy then a litre of brake fluid and some silkolene 15-50 then ,ta :notworthy

corner weighting a car after fitting coilovers is essential IMO. before you get the allignment done too as the geometry will probably change when you get the weights done.

if you are doing the GT circuit at bedford (the longest one) then you should be ok RE oil temps as there is a nice 1 km straight to get some cool ait in and cool the brakes down too.

I wouldn't do more than 20 minutes without a cooler though...

back to corner weighting, when I put mu coilovers on the car I wound each of the springs up the same number of turns and got the height adjustments spot on off the car then put it on the scales and it was all over the place. it is a time consuming job my car took about 2 1/2 hours for GTART to do and that was using air tools to take the wheels off.

time is money unfortunately.

What does corner weighting involve? Whats the process that the companies use?

each wheel goes on a pressure pad, which tells us the weight each wheel has pressing on it. then the coilovers are adjusted to give as close to 50% weight distribution as possible. when they take the measurements you are sitting in the car., mine was set up for having a passenger too.

when they adjust the suspension they will probably alter the ride height and preload, hence getting the geometry set up once you are happy with the weight distribution.

you can get an idea of how good it is already by going to a weigh bridge but this can only tell you front/rear distribution rather than the left/right but you do get an idea. mine was about 51 front 49 rear before but still had to have a lot of adjustments done. simply winding one suspension leg up doesn't always have the desired effect and the 3 others need to be dropped, if you follow.

if you take it to an experienced track prep place they will probably be quicker as they do this day in day out, not many hobby people get it done but afterwards you wonder why you were driving the car like it was:nod: and how you didn't crash it...

/Steve

Bayside Blue
19-01-2006, 14:55
Sounds expensive & Specialist :wack: know any places in the SE that would do that kind of thing?? Is there anything else they do apart from winding the suspension legs up and down? I plan to keep this car for a long time so i'd see it as an investment :)

Right you fellow bum boys

Thinking about this weekend, I think its a bit much for Me Yakko and Martin to all turn up at my FIL place and start taking stuff out of his garage and then pulling our cars apart :(

But if we want to fit these coilovers now to bed in, we must measure them and set them up to the same ride height as now which means we need a nice flat floor - which the garage has

I can't see the answer :(

With these coilovers once set up right where all going to be "drifters" thats in the correct sence of the word (not this Lennie :ghey: doristar fashion). We can get our cars from oversteer closer to neutral as in all tyres losing grip at the same time :wack: Anyways off to learn more :wack: ;)

Phil, you about this weekend for mass brake bleeding session?

SM
10-02-2006, 14:53
OK, for referance me, bren and SteA usually need a full tank and and 2 or 3 to last the full day without any major issues stopping us getting on track.
I MAY be able to bring down my 3 and fill them up for you before I get to bedford, or pop out for you all in the afternoon.
However theres a small chance I'll be training it down Friday night and turning up in a S13 on Sat ;)

ALIGNMENT

Right the guy I've been talking to in Watford sounds promising, he said to me the rear tyre top needs to be visible to allow the modules to go on the wheels and sent me to look at this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/anthoney.bones/gallery/Album1.htm) You can see both front and rear setups there

Do we think we will be able to get that kit on our cars??

If so he can do it for us cost of £92.24 each, as many adjustments as we need, car is on floating platforms too, so no need to drive and check again etc :)

Yakko
20-02-2006, 11:04
Good price!

Even if the top of the rear tyres isn't visible, I think with standard rims, there might be enough room to hook the device over?

I'd definatley be up for that, sounds great.

Any day next week apart from Monday would be best for me.

I'm going to buy a petrol spout when some money comes in this week :) for us to use at bedford till we can find an SSRE bodge fix (Granny tap adapters) for our existing diesel nozzles.

Thinking of other stuff...

Maybe get some coloured zip-tie for our big petrol cans :) Anti-Tamper device :wack: yeah yeah you may be able to cut it off but can you replace a pink zip-tie :ghey: I'll get some orange ones i think.

I'm guessing you'll miss out on any discount that Phil arranges though. :(

I'll see how it goes & how big the discount is.

I'll be running on fumes though lol. :D don't worry I usually scrape up enough money together from somewhere each month :wack:

Got to start paying insurance again in march £200 only dropped by 20 a month but no large deposit

Re Discount, the guy usually charges per adjustment (£20), to do your cars that would be 4, mine 5, hes capping the adjustment fee at 3. So you're getting one free :)

Martin if you're thinking about money for me forget about it for now and sort the alignment, can't have you spinning off :(

Re Alignment, works like this

Setup fee £26
Each adjustment £17.50
All plus vat
So for 3 adjustments its £79.50 or £92.24 inc VAT, may get discount for cash, don't know

So basicaly I'll save £40 over usual rates you guys will save £20

Re Adjustable arms, I'm just about to ring Bren Re some other stuff.

Do you want all your suspensions arms to come to me here so I can be in and sign for them, one big parcel? :)

I want it to rain a bit too, then your fancy slicks will be useless Muhahahahahaa

Did some testing yesterday, should be able to get 12 rims in the back of the mondeo :) Dads coming up and he'll be driving it :)

If it's raining, we'll run the F1s, much less tyre wear in the wet I think.

Do you mind we we put the slicks in the Mondeo then, or maybe 2 each? Do we need to put an inventory of tools together, so that we don't double up needlessly?

Tools yes we'll put together a list, here's a start

what you should each bring yourselves:
Spare oil, coolant, Jerry can, helmet, drivers licence, good footwear, food water, cameras

What we need between us:
Trolley jack (Phil) could do with another
Axle stands (I have 2) could do with some more
Wheel nut spider/wrench (I have 1) could do with more
bits of shaped wood for sills (I have 2)
Blocks of wood for chocking wheels (I have plenty)
Tape for headlights (I have selection)
Foot pump x 2 (I have 1)
Accurate tyre gauge (Phil)
Chain and padlock for securing things (Phil) - padlock has numerous keys ;)
Couple of sets of sockets (Martin & Phil?)
Selection of extra tools, knife, screwdrivers, allen keys, pliers, hose clips etc (I have plenty, bring what you like)

Anything else?

I'll have to check Anna doesn't need the modeo for herself that day :( If she does, may be we can use Dads BMW tourer :)

Alignment update

While digging about for Corner weight info I found this lot

Racing developments (http://www.racingdevelopments.com/laseralignment/index.htm)

Gave them a call, seems like they know everything there is to know about alignment, they will knock 20% off the price for a group of us having the silver package thats a total of £117.50

Its in MK what do you think

Absolutely no trouble with ride heights here

If Lee doesn't mind paying the extra £25~ :) sure.

Might as well get it set up as near perfect as possible.

By that i assume your talking about the problem with the top of the tyre having to be visible??

Lee- I'll probably, but not for sure be able to give you a bit of cash through the month to square off this extra price as I fit a few SAFCs to people cars :)

Getting rather excited now, Looking forward to having a well set up car :D

Corner weighting is the gold package would cost £235 each takes 6 hrs/car

Silver inc all we need to do 2-3hrs/car £117.50

The difference to the Watford place??? well these guys prepare race cars, Watford does road car alignment, but both should be capable. Watford place may have issues with ride height and fitment of kit, but I can find out

I asked racing develpoments about corner weighting, I said if we come with our ride height set and measured accurately on each coilover what do we have to gain with corner weighting? he said, not too much really, plus I read something today that they weight you car differently according to your damper settings and roll bar stiffness, so being as we are all experimenting and changing this to a certain degree I thought it wasn't worth it :)

I'm fine with Watford if they can get the gear on the wheels, thats the question.

You're welcome to come along Jamie :)

Racing developments wanted to split us in to 2 days as it takes them 2+ hours per car, watford seem a little quicker as their system the car floats on platforms - you don't have to go out drive it around come back in etc like you would at RD :)

I'll speak to Tony Bones tomorrow at Watford, if hes available I'll pop down and see if he can get the kit on my car

If he can you lot should be fine and we'll go with him

If not there's another place in Watford too, but I get the feeling they all run this Hunter kit which is the problem. So if its not possible we'll have to all go to MK suck it up and pay the extra. :)

Lee you'd be free to go to Watford, actually that could work for you as your ride will be higher and you have no front camber to adjust :)

ALIGNMENT UPDATE

Just been to Discount tyres in Hemel, London Road HP3 9AZ, as recommended by Tony Bones  Spoke to Mark there this morning and then popped over :)

They have a number of different setups they can use on your car, to get over the "too low" problems  He tried some on mine and its all good :) It should be even easier on std rims :)

So I booked 4 of us in for Wednesday 1st and Thurs 2nd March, Price is the best yet £87.54 inc Vat

I told him we'd arrive with coilovers set at the desired height, all adjustable arms fitted and with the settings you want for your suspension. I told him about the spec of the cars, thats fine. He requested that we arrive for opening time 8.30am. Each car should take 1-1.5 hours.

I suggest you take a look at your toe nuts which are probably seized and try to free them off or at least WD40 them

I'm easy on dates, I know a couple have said 2nd so I'll go on the 1st.

So sign up, who have we got, Me, Yakko, Bayside, Lee, J...., Lennie. I'm sure we can add extra people to the 4 if needs be.

So as you know basically you're getting one adjustment of the 4 free :) saving £19.38
