Encountered the man who likes to stand on motorway bridges this morning with his laser gun.

He had it pointed down range and seemed to be interested in cars cresting a hill that was at least 8-900 yards away. At this distance he is just not visible.

What is the effective range of tripod lasguns. I am going to assume that if modern military lasers can paint a target at nearly 4-5 miles away then lasergun man can tag people at that distance very easily.

Also what is the threshold before he takes a severe interest in you ? 75, 80, 90 ?

Cheers,

No really too sure on exact ranges, but they're pretty far.
As for interest... It depends on what kind of day he's had. I think you're allowed 10%+2mph.

I think they're only effective at a range of 450yds and below. Its not the fact that teh laser cannot go further (coz it can!! much further) its teh fact that the refraction lens acnnot pick up the signal from the laser on the way back!!

The system works just like radar really in that it picks up your reflection and works out the speed of you by the speed of the incoming reflection (or something along those lines!!)

On motorways Ive gone past cops with speed traps at 90+

It depends really on the rest of the cars, if theres lots of people at say 90, he'll be looking at anyone in the 100-105+ sorta speed.

Each device is Home Office approved up to a certain range, but I think 1-2km would be about right :o

My friend was doing about 80 when cresting the hill upon checking the return route I think he is conifdent there is no Line of sight to the crest of the hill and that in fact the policeman was using an obstructing Motorway hoarding for that extra ambush factor. Additionally when a chap pulled out in front without leaving sufficient space he dropped straight down to 70. It was then with about 150 yards to the bridge that the tripod cam was noticed.

He was in middle lane with several cars all travelling at same speed.

Hopefully he is just being paranoid. But as he is just about to swap his car at the end of the week for a 200SX he just wants to avoid points so early on.

Its a difficult one its only 10mph and everyone seems to do it.

apparently they have trouble targeting motorcycles doing more than 130mph, lol i had an interest at the time cos i was doing considerably more lol

A laser speed gun (or LIDAR), requires an averagely flat vertical surface to function. That means it will get you off your headlights, numberplate or anything else which is pretty vertical and pretty flat at the front of your car.

They have a useable measuring distance of between 400ft for one system and 400m for another system, ther is one (EXTREMELY rare) system in use by Northumbrian Police which has a range of approaching 1km (900m).

Any LIDAR has a useable and accurate trap range of upto 200mph!!

Try carbon fibre if you wish to get passed the old laser traps as its very good at breaking up the laser beam and absorbing some of it.

Interestingly enough the police are not supposed to use these where there is a possibility of a dodgy result eg if I'm on my bike and there is someone behind me there is a large chance that the signal may be returned from the car behind rather than my bike, so in that case the police evidence is worthless.
