View Full Version : Penalties for having no front plate?..
Thinking of going front-plate less for a few days to gauge the Wiltshire plod reaction...
Will keep the plate on the passenger seat and use the whole "Lost one of the screws, occifer" approach.. but if all goes well, I'm tempted to blank the holes, and go without until I get the Bomex front nose (hopefully, not TOO long, but who knows..) when I can mount the plate in a different, less intrusive and ugly location..
Just wondering what the penalties/points? etc would be if my excuses didn't go down too well?.
Many thanks,
-D

Do what I've done mate, get some double sided tape stuff and put the number plate on the bottom of the bumper - u might be able to see itin my signature pic (my number plate is very small ;) ) I got stopped once the day I put it there but never since. Looks much better - altho I havent got round to filling in the holes.
What did they say upon stopping you, matey?.. :)

The policeman who spoke to me was on foot and wasn't too bothered, he just said u will need to get that replaced else a traffic cop will pull u over. Didn't say what penalty I may get.
U will most likely get a fine, but I believe u MAY get 3 points for having no front plate. Depends on the mood of the copper I guess.
Hmmm... further research required before I get my screwdriver out, methinks ;)
DVLA site just says "don't do it."
No mention of fines, or otherwise, apart from incorrectly spaced/too small etc, ones. Although I'd imagine they'd probably try it under the same section or something.
Hmm, decisions :)

I asked this on pistonheads, and a serving traffic officer confirmed to me that the maimum fine would be £30, no points. It doesn't go up if you get caught more than once either.
Oooooooh!! :)
Cheers Adam!
D,
Be very very careful with this....
If you get caught once then they are likely to issue you with a rectification notice. Basically you have to replace the plate and then take it to an MOT centre and get a form signed then taken back to Plod. :(
HOWEVER and this is the killer
If you get caught a second time then Plod can take your plate:eek:
I'm not just talking about the plastic bit either. They can take your number from your car permanently; then the DVLA then issue you with a 'Q' plate :( :(
Whats a 'Q' plate?
Also, I've read cars on 'V' car, what's this?
Cheers
I thought it was a 14 day fix first time and 3 points and 30-odd quid if they caught you again?

a Q usually means it has been reregistered, but i may be wrong.

Q plates are issued for a number of reasons!!
If the car is a kit car and hasn't been made by a registered manufacturer and assembled by them it will have a Q registration when you go to register it.
If you build a car, lets say a 2*****, but use the chassis from a donor, the engine from donor 2, the supspension from donor 3, the interior from donor 4 and the xxx from donor 5. They issue it with a Q plate as the car is made up of no single distinguishing car.
Also if teh car has been stolen & recovered, but the chassis numbers have been played with ( ringed ) they issue a Q plate.
Or if a car cannot have its age correctly identified they issue a Q.
I've just been trawling through teh road traffic acts and such like and they cannot take your plate!!
Nobody can, its not yours and its not the cars, its the identification plate which DVLA uses to signify that car!!! Under no circumstances can the identification of a car be removed by anyone. It can have its identity transferred (with an £80odd payment for admin) and it can be scrapped or broken, thats it!!
Why don't motor bikes have to have a front plate? I appreciate that it may be aerodynamic problems as well as astetics but it still seems to me that if your vehicle must be identifiable from the front that should apply to all vehicles not just ones with more than 2 wheels
Or is it just more mindless burocracy:
'the rule is there for cars therefore we won't think about why it's a rule, we'll just blindly enforce it'
Cynical? Me? Never?

No, you're getting confused with the penalties for a misaligned/too small/stupid font number plate. As I said, for NO PLATE AT ALL the maximum fine, regardless of how many times you get caught is £30.
When I next clean the car, I'll take it off and see how discoloured it looks, or how drastic the difference between the bit behind the brick, and the other parts are.
And how ugly the two holes look, but I might give it a go..

Simple, Bikes used to have a number plate fixed to a metal plate that ran over the front wheel. Unfortunately this has the same effect as lashing a razor blade to a toothbrush :( ie not very nice at all. Cue losing limbs in an accident etc.

My Westfield kit car has never had a front plate, except once a year come MOT time ;)
A £30 fine has got to be better than 3 points and a £60 fine if you get caught in a front facing camera... hasn't it? ;)
I'd take the plate off my 200, but the holes in the bumper look nasty :(
My house is so full of crap that I cant put anywhere .. drum kits laying around, cups that dont fit in cupboards, bits of computers.
If I took the plate off the front of the car ... where the hell would I put it ???? ..... it might as well stay where it is ...... thinking of it, I might screw some of those cups to it as well .... at long last they would have a home
